1 September 5, 2018 Dear GCWE Community, Newsletter September 2018 In less than two months our fall Men s Walk to Emmaus is scheduled. First United Methodist Church of Tulsa has graciously opened their doors to host our walks, the Conference Room teams have been diligently training for the walks but the walks can t happen without the help of the community! Here are at least five ways you can help: 1. Pray for the Men and Women s Conference Room teams. 2. Pray for pilgrims, talk with your church about Emmaus, and submit applications. Deadline for Men s Applications is October, 15, 2018 Deadline for Women s Applications is October 29, Support Emmaus with monetary contributions to help defray the cost of the walks. *We need to purchase at least ten new air mattresses. *Upper Room requires we carry liability insurance for all of our volunteers and our board. The cost of these policies puts quite a dent in our budget. *The cost of food and the cost of storage units for all of our equipment has increased. Upper Room has published new Team Manuals, Lay Director Manuals and Board Manuals which GCWE must purchase for the Spring Walk Teams. Contributions are tax deductible and may be sent to Green Country Walk to Emmaus P.O. Box Tulsa, Ok Your Reunion Group can start making Agape for the Pilgrims. 5. Last but not least, mark your calendars to volunteer throughout the walk weekend. 3 EMMAUS MUSIC Someone recently stated that music is the soul of the Emmaus Walk. Last January we held our first Emmaus Music Workshop. By popular request, we are planning another one. If you play an instrument (especially guitar, mandolin, or ukulele) and would like to improve your skills or just like to play, we have a Workshop for you on Sept. 30 from 2:00 to 4:00. We will have experienced guitarists available to give you suggestions and help you learn how to develop your abilities. We ll share resources for learning the songs we sing at Emmaus. If you are a singer (but don t play an instrument), you can come to the workshop for a time of learning songs and singing together. NO PRESSURE This will be fun time of pickin and grinnin. 4 Walk to Emmaus influence is powerful and moves individuals in ways that we can only imagine. The following is from Mr. Don Trotter who expounds on his life after his Green Country Walk to Emmaus #57! I was attending Church, teaching 2nd grade Sunday school on a regular basis and thought I was close to God. Then my wife and I were invited by Ed Enlow to attend Walk to Emmaus #57. I tell everyone that on my walk I was quiet enough long enough to hear Gods still small voice. At age 37 I truly gave my heart to God and he gave me a heart for Youth. My wife and I started a bible study for youth in our home. At one point we had over 100 youth coming to our home to hear Gods word. Over a twenty year period, my wife and I have been blessed to touch 100's of youth and adults lives with Gods love. The Lord has allowed us the privilege to watch several youth accept Christ as their personal lord and savior as well as a few adults. I have worked with the youth at church the entire time as well. My wife played piano, sang in the choir and cooked for the church on a weekly basis. Thank you to everyone that has been involved with Walk to Emmaus. 8 SPONSORSHIP SPONSORSHIP: THE MOST IMPORTANT JOB OF ALL 1. Good sponsorship is the first act of Agape 2. Good sponsorship undergirds the whole weekend with sacrificial love on behalf of each pilgrim embodying the personal commitment of the community to each pilgrim 3. Good sponsorship is the foundation for a healthy, effective Emmaus Movement that is fulfilling its true purpose: the development of Christian leaders and the renewal of the church in ministry DeColores!! How Time Flies! With the Fall Walks just around the corner! We would Like to remind everyone to get those "New Pilgrim Registrations" in for Walks 179 & 180! Attention New Sponsors! Sometimes new pilgrims are just waiting for or seeking a sponsor to invite them to the Walk to Emmaus. Some of them are close friends or even family. They may be interested in knowing more about the walk and curious about your experience. Inform them about the talks, about the fellowship that is developed and the feeling of Christian Community experienced over the weekend. Won't you be the friend that starts a new pilgrim towards a lifetime of fourth day experiences. Remember someone asked you. Who do you know that is ready for the EMMAUS EXPERIENCE. Just do it! 8 8

9 A MESSAGE FROM OUR AGAPE/PRAYER CHAIRPERSON As you read this newsletter, you will see the dates for our next Green Country Walks. And with a Walk, comes the need for: Agape supplies and a Prayer Vigil signup. If you or your Reunion Group usually send Agape items during a Walk, please start preparing those again. If your group has not done this in the past, please consider beginning to add this to your service. Wanting ideas? I've got you covered! Check out Pinterest and go to Emmaus Agape Ideas. You will find a ton of ideas from really simple to not-so-simple, but ideas of all kinds are right in front of you. As you look over those suggestions, you'll probably think of ways to tweak it or even change it to one of your own. The number of Agape items has changed to 65 for each Walk. Bring your items to the sendoff for each Walk. Another important part of every Emmaus Walk is always our Prayer Vigil. The list will be available at our Gatherings or meetings from now until the Walk weekends. Just a reminder that you do not have to come to the church during the weekend. You're welcome to do that, but you can also pray from your home. If you know you won't be able to come to our meetings before the Walk weekends, please send me an and I'll be glad to add your name to the Prayer Vigil list. I'm new to Green Country's Board this year and find myself anxious to begin this part of the Emmaus 4th Day. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
