1 Greater Cincinnati Emmaus and Chrysalis Community February, 2018 A Message from our Spiritual Director Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit... Dave Eaton chose 2 Timothy 1:7 as the team formation verse for Men s Walk # Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and selfdiscipline. Is this still true for us today? Can we have the same power and love and self-discipline as those we may think of as spiritual giants of scripture? Power: God told Zechariah that Zerubbabel laid the foundation and completed the temple not by power or might but by His Spirit. Zechariah 4:6: This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty. No matter how big or strong or smart Zerubbabel was, he could not have accomplished this task without God. We know that power comes not from our own strength but by God s Spirit in us! Acts 1:8 we will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes upon us! Let us accept the power that God wants to give us! Love: Paul told the Thessalonians that they had no need to be told about brotherly love. This principle was so basic that Paul knew it was obvious to the Thessalonians as it should be obvious to us today. God himself has placed the importance of love in each of our hearts yet, sometimes, we must all be reminded. 1 Thessalonians 4:9 But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another... Let us remember to love! Self-discipline: If we lack self-discipline or self-control quite often it s due to fear. This one thing I know - if we are afraid, the fear is NOT coming from God! David said that he would not be afraid even if tens of thousands were against him because God sustained him. David knew the secret was to rely on God. Psalm 3:6: I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side Psalm 27:3: though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear, Psalm 118:6: The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? I ve heard it said that the phrase Fear not appears 365 times in scripture. It s a nice idea but it s not true. Depending on the translation that you use, it may appear over 100 times but not 365 times. But I ask you, do we need to be told daily/365 times; shouldn t once be enough? To answer the question at the beginning of this article: (Can we have the same power and love and self-discipline as those that we may think of as spiritual giants of scripture?) YES, we can! Let us remember to rely on God! 2 2 A Message from our Community Lay Director SPONSORSHIP CHANGE A LIFE! Wise sponsorship is a pillar of the Emmaus and Chrysalis movements. Sponsorship is a process that builds up the body of Christ and requires extensive prayer and openness to God. It is the first act of agape before a Walk begins, and it undergirds the whole week-end with sacrificial love on behalf of each pilgrim. It is the foundation for a healthy and effective Emmaus movement, which in turn results in the renewal of the larger Church. What we are doing through our sponsorship is giving someone the opportunity of finding the Jesus they never knew. We are giving them the opportunity to realize that the Gospel is not about measuring up, or rather NEVER measuring up, but about God s grace and love. For others Emmaus provides the opportunity to come home from a hard journey in a distant land, like the prodigal son. As the pilgrims walk with Christ on their week-end and consider the reorientation of their priorities, experience the grace of God in a loving community, and are wooed by the Holy Spirit to be disciples, they will naturally want to transform the most significant areas of their lives as a result of this new experience of love. This renews the face of the earth. What a mighty gift our sponsorship is! Prayerfully consider, diligently think, and then reach out and Change a Life by sponsoring a pilgrim on a Walk or Flight! Sponsor training is held the 1st Thursday of the month, before Gathering, in the Fireside Room (6:45 pm) We are looking for someone to work with Debbie Albright on the Sponsor Training position. It requires approximately 45 minutes each month to provide training prior to the Gathering on the first Thursday of month. It is a wonderful way to get to know others in your Emmaus Community! 4 4 FACE TO FACE ENCOUNTER Our next Encounter will take place at Springdale Nazarene Church in Cincinnati Ohio and will be held on March 6, 8, 13 and 16, :30-3pm. Face to Face is for a specific audience for 60 and over, or handicapped who do not want or unable to spend the night. So start thinking of those who have expressed an interest in Emmaus but can t do a 72 hour walk. We are looking forward to a full Encounter with your help. Registration is only $50.
