1 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED DEVON WOLFE Many of you know Erin and Devon Wolfe since both have been very involved in our parish ever since they joined. After almost 6 years of preparation, the bishop will ordain Devon a deacon on Saturday, May 18. We have published the banns to officially announce the ordination; but I would ask for your prayers now as he begins the final preparation. Unfortunately, 16 will be ordained during the Liturgy, so only a very few folks from each parish can be invited. But Devon will serve as deacon at all three Liturgies the weekend of May 18\19, so you will be able to congratulate him then. SO WHAT IS A DEACON? Most parishioners only see a deacon when he serves at Liturgy. But the role of deacon is to live up to what the word means: servant; the deacon is one who is called by God to a ministry of service. Ordained like priests and bishops, the deacon receives the Sacrament of Holy Orders. He is called by God to serve the people of God, especially the poor and neglected -- the least among us. He also serves as a reminder to all of us that we are all called to live that same kind of service. The majority of deacons in the U.S. are married. They bring to Holy Orders the gifts they have received and are still being nurtured as they live the Sacrament of Matrimony. Deacons are first mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (6:2-5). The apostles were concerned that the needs of the poor, especially the widows, were not being met. So the apostles called a meeting of all Jesus' disciples and asked them to select seven "filled with the Spirit and wisdom" who would devote themselves to serving the poor so that they could focus on "prayer and preaching the Word." In the first couple of centuries of the Church, both men and women served as deacons. By 350 or so, only men were ordained permanently as deacons; and early in the second millennium, ordination to the diaconate was only a stepping stone toward ordination to the priesthood. The Second Vatican Council called for restoring the diaconate, and in 1967 Pope Paul VI reestablished it as a permanent ministry in the Roman Catholic Church. Today there are over 29,000 deacons worldwide, with more than half of those in the U.S. While the particular ministry of each deacon tends to vary from deacon to deacon, one thing is constant: each is filled with the Spirit and is called to devote themselves to serving the poor in a way that challenges all of us to care for the least among us. Fr. Dave Howell THIS WEEK LITURGIES April 22, Monday Acts 11:1-18/Jn 10:1-10 9:00 am +Nina Krajewski April 23, Tuesday Acts 11:19-26/Jn 10: :00 am Communion Service April 24, Wednesday Acts 12:24 13:5a/Jn 12: :00 pm +Helen Callaghan Mass of Anointing April 25, Thursday St. Mark, Evangelist 1 Pt 5:5b-14/Mk 16: :00 am +Stanley Chesney April 26, Friday Acts 13:26-33/Jn 14:1-6 9:00 am +Silvia Roperti April 27, Saturday Acts 13:44-52/Jn 14:7-14 4:30 pm +Edward Gosbeth April 28, FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Acts 14:21-27/Rv 21:1-5a/Jn 13:31-33a, am St. Mary Magdalen Parishioners 11 am +Emil & Marie Caruso FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Acts of the Apostles 14: The book of Acts shows how the Easter message spread to all parts of the Mediterranean world. Today we hear a travelogue of part of one of Paul s missionary journeys that took him to modern-day Turkey. The mountainous terrain there made travel difficult and dangerous, and the situation was even worse because of the constant threat of robbers, flash floods and wild animals. Revelation 21:1-5 Many people think the book of Revelation gives secret information about future events, including the end of the world. But it was really intended to be a source of hope for Christians suffering persecution toward the end of the first century. The author vividly describes visions of how God would ultimately overcome all evil and bring all creation to its destiny. John 13:1, Here we return to the scene of the Last Supper. John has added the words of a Christian hymn and altered them to fit the circumstances of the meal. The mutual glorification of God and the Son now has two perspectives: the Son of Man is glorified in his obedience to God and God is glorified in the fulfillment of the divine will. Then God glorifies the Son by raising Jesus from the dead, the Son s victory over death gives glory to God the father. Reflect: How do you know that you are living what you believe?

3 Religious Formation News from Mary at and Karen at On Facebook at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church Final Home Study meeting is today at 10:15. Last Classes are today and this week. We will start with a prayer service and then move into the ice cream social with the Wed/Thurs classes. All are welcome to join us! A BIG THANK YOU for the crosses made by each of the families in our Family Program! Each family created a cross from materials in their homes and wrote out the story that described why and how they made it. It was very moving and interesting, and was amazing to see the gym packed with everyone looking at each of the crosses. Great job Diane Neitzke and our families! Registration for fall classes has begun! It will continue today and on Wed/Thurs., April 24 and 25. Sunday registration will be in the West Wing workroom. Make sure you register early to get the class you want-regardless of your ability to pay. New Catechetical Ministers invited: We need catechists, aides, hall monitors and nursery help for next year. We also are in need of new members for our Formation Team. Over the last 13 years we have changed, adapted, organized into grade-level teams, learned to support each other, look into the individual learning needs of each child in our program, and much more. Please contact me for more information; we cannot do it with out you! Service hours: any youth who needs them, please me or call me at ( ). We have lots of different opportunities we need help with! JWJ: Our first planning meeting is Monday, April 22, at 7pm. Please come help us plan our summer Vacation Bible School scheduled for July 29-Aug 2. We want to start planning, but we need leaders for our Vacation Bible School. Here at St MM we call it Journey with Jesus or JWJ for short. If you are interested in being a part of the planning committee (it takes a lot of helping hands!) or want to get on our helper list, please sign up in the gathering area at the formation table. First Eucharist parents are reminded that flowers are due for the altar next week BEFORE rehearsal. It is our goal to have them arranged before we practice with the youth, and it takes a long time. Rehearsal is Friday, May 3, at 6:30. Please be on time, it should take us one hour. Confirmation Retreat for our current 9 th grade youth is set for August 9/10 and will be overnight. Please make sure to mark your calendars! Visit the Formation section of our website at for class information! Have a great week. Youth News from Margaret at yminister1@gmail.com and Stasia at tkcsmom@att.net It has been a funny start to the spring season with so much rain and cold weather still, as of last weekend. Despite the gray weather, however, I hope your Easter season and celebrations have been filled with joy and colorful, good times with friends and family. Joy and happiness is a choice; to be so even in the grayest of times can be a difficult thing. God is alive in your heart and that should be fuel enough for the light you are meant to give off!! Next Saturday, April 27, it is my hope that many teens and adults alike will participate in the Labor of Love service day here in Livingston County. We are part of the rake and run efforts to help senior citizens and/or the handicapped with spring yard work. See me in the gathering area following either Sunday Liturgy this weekend for more information. Also.. NRN information.i will be in the gathering area also to collect NRN payments, handout paperwork or answer any questions. As part of our fundraising efforts for the summer service trip with NRN, we volunteer at MIS for the races June We camp, we work, we have fun and we earn money! Even if you are not participating this summer, this is a great way to earn money for other events we have throughout the year. For instance, you could easily pay your way to Cedar Point this summer in late June. Think about joining us and contact me for more information. EDGE It s hard to believe, but this is our last meeting of the year! It brings our meetings for to a close. It has been a good year and a good many new faces! Plan to join us for games, fun, pizza and cake!! I would like to thank the EDGE leaders for all their help planning and being present to the middle school students month after month. Thank you to Jeannie Herrell, Jill Joyce, Michelle Nist, and Michele Anderer. Special thanks to our dedicated youth leaders, Alex Nist (who has been with us all year) and to Emily Wolfe (who has recently joined the teen leadership portion of EDGE)! Thank you. MASS OF ANOINTING: On Wednesday, April 24th, we will be celebrating a Mass of Anointing at the 7:00pm Mass. All who are having surgery or have serious or chronic illnesses are especially invited to attend.
