1 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED From Fr. Dave THIS WEEK S LITURGIES THE POST-PENTECOST AFTERGLOW! On Pentecost Sunday, the Holy Spirit was revealed to the followers of Christ as his Spirit was lavished upon them. Last Sunday, we celebrated the feast of the Holy Trinity and our faith that God is one, but a trinity of persons. This Sunday we celebrate the feast of the Body & Blood of Christ. For it is by the Holy Spirit that bread & wine are transformed into Christ, so that he can remain with us always according to his promise. On Friday, we celebrate the feast of the Sacred Heart and the reminder that it was love that led the Lord Jesus to give his life for us. SOME QUESTIONS There have been three town hall style meetings to give folks the opportunity to ask questions and get answers about our impending budget crunch. Here is another question that was asked and the answer: Our parish leadership knew that our 3-5 year fund drive would eventually end. What was their plan to pay off the building when it ended? First, we spent approximately $500,000 more than we had originally budgeted for, raising the total cost from $8.9 million to $9.4 million. Secondly, because of the great recession and other economic factors, we will not receive all of the $5,024,556 that was committed to our building fund; in fact, it will fall short by over $750,000. Thirdly, we were charged interest on every dollar borrowed from the Diocesan Savings & Loan from the moment it was loaned out. Evidently this has been diocesan policy for a few years now. When we began construction we had planned to repay the remaining $3.8 million over 15 years from our operating income. Most parishes have a series of fund drives to pay off their mortgage; that is what our neighboring parishes have been doing. Our plan was that, with a slight increase in our Sunday collection, we would pay off the remaining debt from our operating budget. However, our indebtedness increased by over $1.5 million, so we owe $5.3 million instead of the $3.8 million we had planned for. As a result, our monthly mortgage payment is $42,000 instead of the expected $25,000-$30,000. ON A PERSONAL NOTE As most of you know, after more than ten years of living with me, my younger sister who has MS moved to Howell Care Center after being hospitalized for almost 4 months. For almost 9 years, MaryAnna had a small Pomeranian named Tiffany. A former show dog, Tiff was more than content to be on MaryAnna s lap or bed and the two were constant companions. Even in the nursing home, Tiff was welcomed by all the staff. I often signed her visitors book simply: Tiff & friend. Tiff died last month in the middle of the night. And telling my sister was one of the most difficult tasks I have undertaken in a long time Fr. Dave Howell June 11, Monday- Saint Barnabas, Apostle Acts 11:21b-26 13:1-3/Mt 5:1-12 9:00 am +Helen Dehanke June 12, Tuesday 1 Kgs 17:7-16/Mt 5: :00 am +Patricia Angelucci June 13, Wednesday Saint Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church 1 Kgs 18:20-39/Mt 5: :00 pm +Albert Albanelli June 14, Thursday 1 Kgs 18:41-46/Mt 5: :00 am +June O Donnell June 15, Friday The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Hos 11:1, 3-4, 8c-9/Eph 3:8-12, 14-19/Jn 19: :00 am +Christine Schifko June 16, Saturday - The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary 1 Kgs 19:19-21/Lk 2:41-51 June 17, Sunday Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time Ex 17:22-24/2 Cor 5:6-10/Mk 4: :30 pm Our Living & Deceased Fathers 9:00 am Our Living & Deceased Fathers 11:00 am Our Living & Deceased Fathers Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle B Ezekiel 17:22-24 Ezekiel was a major Old Testament prophet who ministered to the Jewish people exiled in Babylon. He often used parables and dramatizations to convey his message. In this passage, Ezekiel uses the image of trees to talk about the restoration of Israel and the fall of the Babylonian empire. 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 We continue today to read from Paul s second letter to the Corinthians. In this section of the letter, Paul describes our life on earth as a pilgrimage on our way home to heaven. Mark 4:26-34 Jesus uses parables, cast in everyday images, to give his listeners a view of the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven prepared for us. Today s imagery grows in momentum as Jesus speaks. Reflect: Jesus explained the parables to his disciples but not to the crowds. Do I need to hear a clearer explanation?

Youth in 6 th grade and older are encouraged to join our sky crew! I know it is the beginning of summer and time to relax, kick back and enjoy our great Michigan outdoors!
