1 A Newsletter of St. Mary Magdalen Parish June/July 2014 Volume XXI Issue 6 20th Anniversary Year June 28, 2013 June 28, 2014 KIDS AGAINST HUNGER A call was made by Pope Francis to look for ways to ease and end world hunger. It is our parish goal to partner with Kids Against Hunger Coalition to help make a contribution to this cause. With over one billion people going to bed hungry each day, it is imperative to do what we can to help end world hunger. Kids Against Hunger packages highly nutritious, lifesaving meals for starving children and malnourished children in developing countries and the United States. The goal of the organization is for its meals to provide a stable nutritional base from which recipient families can move their families from starvation to self-sufficiency. Mobilizing the energy and caring of American children, teens, and adults on behalf of hungry children around the world accomplish this. The meals have been formulated by food scientists to provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins needed by a malnourished child s body and mind. The meals offer all nine of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition something that cannot be said about other typical food relief sources such as rice and beans alone. The beauty of the food formulation is its simplicity. It is made from readily available, dry ingredients that are easy to package, keep for long periods, and require only boiling with water to prepare. As a parish wide project we intend to raise the funds to purchase and pack the supplies into well balanced meals which can be shipped abroad as well as saved here for unforeseen disasters. The cost per meal is only 28 cents! Our goal is 30,000 meals. The amount of money we need to raise is $8, We will need approximately 240 volunteers to assist on our packaging day, which will be scheduled for this fall. 2 VISION 20\20 Over the last year, our Pastoral Council and other councils and ministry teams have spent a great deal of time planning for the future of our parish. Together they have created seven goals and 34 strategies to move us closer to achieving our parish vision. 1. Continue to develop a parish community that is inclusive, welcoming, and engaged 2. Deepen our engagement in the greater community through ministry and service 3. Continually improve all our efforts based on parishioner and community feedback 4. Increase opportunities to encourage spiritual growth of our parishioners 5. Better communicate our initiatives to the public and current parishioners through media outreach 6. More effectively use technological tools to achieve our goals 7. Encourage a more earth friendly environment Earlier this year, all the other leadership groups in the parish reviewed the goals and strategies to discuss the role each group would have in accomplishing the plan. In some cases, a council or ministry teams expected to take the lead in accomplishing a particular strategy; in other cases they thought they would work with another group or simply assist other groups in making it happen. In March and April our Pastoral Council reviewed all of the ideas from the other councils and ministry teams and assigned leadership roles for each strategy. Our purpose is to assure the plan has accountability and responsibility. On Wednesday, May 21, our Pastoral Council assembled for Directions. Along with our other councils and ministry teams to assign times for each of the strategies so that we can plan how we might accomplish this plan for our community over the next five years. At the last Council meeting for this term, we will review the work of Directions and decide when we will work on the strategies we have taken on. When the plan is complete, it will answer: what will be done, by who and by when. The completed plan will be brought to the whole parish in September. 3 PASTORAL COUNCIL COMMENDATIONS The Pastoral Council would like to commend Rob Cooney as a Knight of Malta. Rob did a wonderful job in arranging all the details in allowing Gretchen and Larry Buslepp to go to Lourdes, France. Thanks for your ministry Rob! The Council would also like to commend the Motor Moms and Dads who assist in the Preschool program and work with the young children. Thanks a 1,000,000! You do a great ministry with our young children. RELIGIOUS FORMATION from Mary Mahar In our Formation program it takes many hearts and voices to bring the Word of God to our youth and children of St. Mary Magdalen. We have been blessed by the many Catechetical Ministers; women, men and teens who have come, week after week, prepared to share lessons with your children. Even on the week off of classes, many of them met with other team members to plan ahead. We work as teams to meet the needs of each child and family and to make sure we are working together in getting the Church s teachings across at each grade level. Many even made time to take Formation classes for certification. We have several women who break open the Word every Sunday morning with the children who leave Mass for Children s Liturgy of the Word as well. We are grateful to all of you who worked so hard to help our families see Christ at work in them! 4 OF FAITH & SERVICE from Sr. Joyce Hoile, OSF Celebrate the Breath of the Spirit with Kite Flying Pentecost Sunday June 8. From 2-4 or 5 pm, we will have a fun afternoon of flying kites. So bring your kites or spinwheels or parachutes and see what you can do with the help of the wind (The Holy Spirit). We will gather in the yards by the play area and the pavilion. Dads and Moms, grandparents and friends come help the first-time kite flyers. Birthday cake and ice cream will be served at 3 pm. in the pavilion. Please sign up at the Community Life Board so we have an approximate number for desserts. CHARITY AND JUSTICE from Sue Weir June Pregnancy Helpline Project. The Pregnancy Help Clinic offers a variety of services and much needed baby items to assist expectant mothers. Tags will be in the gathering area listing the needed items for babies and empty baby bottles will be there for you to take home to fill with spare change. Please feel free to take a tag and/or a baby bottle and return the gifts to the gathering area. The project will run from June 2-25th. OF FAITH, HOPE & LOVE from Devon Wolfe In early May, I had the opportunity to revisit the tornadodamaged area in Oklahoma City where our youth group worked last summer. Less than a year ago, we stood in an empty field where an elementary school once buzzed with activity, and we looked around us at a panorama of destruction that was so far-reaching that the neighborhood surrounding the school was completely leveled. Today, that school is nearly rebuilt, and dozens upon dozens of houses are finished and occupied or are rising from their formerly empty foundations. My heart was filled with joy as I witnessed the evidence that the hard work we had put in the year before had allowed people to move on with their lives and rebuild. As I reflected on what I saw, the Lord reminded me again that charitable works--whether it's cleaning up debris or caring for the sick or feeding the poor--are all about helping to restore what was lost so that people can go on living. If we look to the Gospels, we see this so many times in Jesus' words: "Your faith has healed you. Go in peace" or "Go and sin no more" or "Rise, pick up your mat and go home." As we continue our examination of Catholic Social Teaching this year, let us all remember that when Jesus said "the poor you will always have with you," he wasn't saying that poverty is supposed to be permanent. What he meant is that at any given time there will be people who find themselves in a situation where they need our help. Our job as disciples of Jesus is to help them to get back on their feet so they can walk forward again and to find ways to remedy the injustices that hold them back. 5 The DEACON'S BENCH from Dave Scharf Do we have a obligation to stand up for fair trade or take a stand on slave labor, or the dying rainforests, or the uneducated, or the ozone depletion, or the unemployed, or the homeless, or the hungry, or internet porn, or immigrants, or war, or inappropriate behavior of any kind, or unethical politicians, or on and on and on and... Let me put it this way YES. Jesus told us that Whenever you did it for the least of my brothers [and sisters] you did it for me Each person is a child of God, and has a dignity they can never lose. That is why people are more important than things. Human beings are made to connect with other people. One of the most basic connections is family. There is a wider connection called society, in which all have a right and responsibility to participate. Every person has a right to life - which includes food, shelter, health care, education and employment - and every person has a responsibility to support these rights for others. The poor have a special claim because they are not sharing in the goods that God intended for all. A basic measure of everything we do is: How will this involve or affect the poor? Work is not a necessary evil but a participation in God s word in creating and sustaining the cosmos. The worker is to be respected and has a right to a wage adequate to support a family. We belong to one human family and ARE our sisters and brothers keepers wherever they live. The story of creation says that God looked at everything and saw that it was good. All creation belongs to God and we must be good stewards of what God has made. Therefore, we have a moral obligation toward ALL people. THE OTHER BENCH from Jim Chevalier Why do we believe that Jesus is in us and we are in Him? Because the Lord Himself said in His own words This world will see me no longer but you shall see me. Because I live you shall live as well, for I am in my Father, you are in me, and I am in you. Why did Jesus give us this explanation? He is in the Father by reason of his divine nature, and we are in him by reason of his human birth, and he is in us through the mystery of the sacraments. This is what he wants us to believe; this is how he wanted us to understand the unity between the Father, Jesus, and you & me. Christ is in every truth of the Father by his eternal generation; we are in every truth in Christ, and he likewise is in us. Christ confirms this reality when he said: He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I in him. Christ will take to himself only the flesh of those who have received his. We draw life from his flesh just as he draws life from the Father. SERVANT TO MANY from Gary Prise Magdalen s Kitchen, our Monday evening community meal, is well into its fourth year of operation. There is a kitchen leader and a dining room leader for each Monday of the month. The leaders have held their position for several years and two of the kitchen leaders have indicated they will be taking a break from this responsibility. The leaders make a one year commitment and they serve one Monday each month. It is always the same Monday (i.e. the 1 st or 2 nd Monday). In addition to giving direction to the assistant cooks who volunteer on their day, the kitchen leader plans the menu and shops for the menu ingredients. There are many gifted cooks in our parish who are waiting to be called to share their gifts. Well, here is your call: God has chosen you and is calling you to come forth to share your culinary talents. If you would like to get more information about the position please talk to John Lawler, Joe Martinez, Dianne Sweeter, or Tom Sullivan; they are the current kitchen leaders. God typically does not call the qualified, God qualifies the called. KNIGHT S KORNER from Ken Anderer, St. Mary Magdalen Council June will be a very busy month for the Knights here at St. Mary Magdalen. The last Pancake Breakfast of the year is Sunday June 8. Our parish Golf Outing is on Saturday, June 14 at Whispering Pines Golf and Banquet Center in Pinckney. The outing is open to all parishioners and their families. To secure a spot in the field or sponsor a hole, contact Dave Alfanos at alfanosd@mscdirect.com or call Watch Knights Corner in gathering space for information on the KofC Vocations Night Lugnuts Baseball Game. The Lugnuts take on the West Michigan Whitecaps at 7:50pm at the Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing. This is a very affordable way for a family to take in a professional ball game with a fireworks show following the game. It is a great night out and supports the Seminarians of our Diocese. 6 YOUTH NEWS from Margaret Callaghan WOW its June already! Students are preparing for finals, some are planning for graduation open houses and others are planning what to do with the free days of summer with their friends. Whatever you are planning or preparing for, may God bless your plans with enough courage to face challenges, enough friendship to make the days fun, and enough love to make your world good. Speaking of planning ahead. Mark your calendars now and rsvp with me via at for our annual Cedar Point trip with all the other youth from the diocese of Lansing on Wednesday June 25 th. We will again travel by bus with St. John s in Hartland and a few other groups. The cost is $60 for the park ticket and bus transportation. Other monies will be needed for food throughout the day. Money is due no later than our last meeting on June 8 th. Be sure you are signed up for the graduation Mass on June 1 st at the 9am liturgy. Come wearing your cap and gown as you will be recognized and prayed over at the end of Mass. It is nice to see all of the graduates walk in with Fr. Dave wearing their school colors in cap and gown! Following the 9am Liturgy, there will be a reception in the community room where we as a parish can congratulate them personally. Everyone is invited. NRN information.there is a meeting scheduled for Tuesday June 3 rd at 7pm to talk in detail about MIS, the fundraising opportunity scheduled for June I will talk about what is needed, what is expected of us and how the whole weekend works. I will also of course talk about the money we raise. If you cannot make it to this meeting and plan to participate, please me at yminister1@gmail.com. Also I will be collecting the paperwork that was handed out last month along with payments for the trip. Our last meeting of the year is one of fun, food, water and fire! Join us as we celebrate a great year together on June 8 th from 6-9pm at the Wagner s home in Brighton. I will pass out their address at our June 1 st meeting. Third year running at their home! Thank you for your hospitality!! Congratulations to the three high school students who will be attending the Diocese Youth Leadership Camp this summer right after school is out. Allie Darish, Rachel Wagner, and Emma Kehn will learn not only leadership skills but they will grow in their faith! Along with nearly 100 other high school teens, these young women will be changed and their hearts lit on fire for the love of God. This year we wish Chelsea Bielicki good luck as well as she is going as one of the chosen past campers to be a small group teen leader! What an honor and blessing to be in this position. Good luck to all four girls! Plans for next year are already underway. The youth leadership team is excited about what is to come. There will be a few summer meetings that they will plan and I will advertise here. Check here weekly for details and locations. You need to become involved to know the positive power of our youth! MAGDALEN S LITTLE PEOPLE from Kathie Anderer Greetings from preschool Our school year has come to a close. We had a great time this year and we will all have many memories to cherish in the years to come. We wish our students that are moving on the very best of every thing. We hope that it won t be the last time we share a smile. We wish our returning students a great summer! This last month was packed full of activities. We had our Mother s Day tea, our Daddy Donut Day, a visit from the Fire department & the State police, Clinton Twp. and Farmington Hills police, and our field trip to Oh, My Lolli, Jack s Custard, and Great Harvest Bread Co. So much fun so little time to fit it all in but we did!! Sign up for next year is ongoing. Let us know if we can be of service to you or someone you know. 7 INNER SILENCE makes possible our conversation with God from Diane Kubus Taizé If you would like a relaxing contemplative time of quiet prayer away from the pressures and loudness of life, join us for Taizé prayer. It s on a Friday evening, once a month, at 8pm. You will need to watch our calendar for the dates. This month: Friday, June 27. The Taizé Evening Prayer we celebrate is done in this traditional format in the darkened chapel where candlelight illuminates icons of Christ and the Saints. It consists of songs, psalms, Scripture, the Lord s Prayer, intercessions, and periods of silence and is approximately 45 minutes. It is the Word of God set to music; its constant, gentle, repetitive quality allows contemplation and prayer on the sentiments that it expresses. An essential part of the prayer is silence. Inner silence makes possible our conversation with God. For the voice of God is often heard only in a whisper, in a breath of silence. Remaining in silence in God s presence, we may be open to the Holy Spirit. Taizé is located in the south of Burgundy, France. It s the home of an international, ecumenical community made up of over a hundred brothers, (Catholics and from various Protestant backgrounds,) from more than twenty five nations. They are committed to a great simplicity of life. Since the late 1950s, many thousands of young adults from many countries have found their way to Taizé to take part in meetings of prayer and reflection. At the heart of daily life in Taizé is the common prayer. The structure of the prayer is similar to that of the "Divine Office" from the Catholic monastic tradition consisting of a hymn, psalms, Scripture reading and intercessions. The spirituality of Taizé is a spirituality that is firmly rooted in the great Christian tradition of the past, yet it is open to the contemporary world, but most of all it is centered on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
