1 MARDI GRAS!! ALL THINGS CONSIDERED Ash Wednesday is February 13! That means that it s time for a party!! That s what Mardi Gras is all about! While many associate Mardi Gras with New Orleans, it actually started over a thousand years ago in Medieval Europe. Lent was an austere time: Christians fasted, eating three simple meatless meals and nothing in between. Dairy products, fats and sugar were banned from food, alcohol was curtailed and people avoided entertainments of all sorts. So how do you get ready for that kind of austerity? You have a party!! The purpose of the party was to feast on the foods that would be given up. There would be dancing and feasting and often people would dress up in costumes just to make it even more fun. The Spanish and Italians called it Carnival (meaning farewell to meat) and the French called it Mardi Gras (meaning fat Tuesday). The English made rich pancakes and the Polish people made rich, filled donuts. But almost everyone had some way of celebrating before the austerity of Lent. Next Saturday is our Mardi Gras! A time to celebrate before Lent! There will be food, fun and games; costumes are optional -- the fun is not!! SECURITY Ever since the attack on the students at Sandy Hook School, security has been re-examined by many schools, administrators and teachers. And with all the children we have around here it became the special concern at our January staff meeting, which included all our pastoral staff, our secretaries, preschool staff and maintenance staff. Since last year, the doors to the West Wing have been locked after 9:15 when the preschool is in session and often once a Religious Ed session has begun (late arrivals makes it more difficult, so staff is often present near the entrance). We have also put together a set of written procedures for a wide variety of possible concerns ranging from threatening people to threatening weather. All of these procedure are posted by every phone and in almost every room. We also will be keeping more doors locked: both exterior and interior doors. That way we can prevent folks from coming in without anyone knowing it and then hiding. So if you find the front doors locked come to the office entrance. You may also need to get a key or have someone unlock a room for you as well. I know it may be inconvenient, but it is a reasonable precaution. (The Blessed Sacrament Chapel is always open, but the door to church will not be most weekdays.) Your understanding and cooperation is greatly appreciated!! His enthusiastic response to God s call led to a prophetic career that lasted over 40 years. In this brief passage, we find not only the source for the Holy, Holy in the Mass, but also the prayer before reading the Gospel, (asking God to cleanse one s lips), and finally the refrain from a frequently used contemporary hymn. 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 We continue our reading from Paul s first letter to the Corinthians. Some members of the community had questioned the bodily resurrection of Jesus, and our own resurrection as well. This passage is Paul s response. It pre-dates the Gospels and is the oldest written record of the Church s core tradition about Christ s resurrection. Luke 5:1-11 Human nature recoils at being asked to do something great, or new or different. Life walked in the footsteps of Christ is never very secure or stable. Why take the risk? Luke s point is that because we bear the name Christian makes us all apostles. With Jesus love as bait, we are to launch out into the deep and lure all people to Christ by word, deed, example or by whatever means available. Reflect: To whom am I called to show love to today?

Just a reminder about snow days: Since it is January, it is a good time to remind you of our snow policy. If Brighton area schools are cancelled due to bad weather, our Faith Formation classes will also be cancelled. In case Religious Formation is cancelled during the school day, we will notify each family by . (We are no longer using the automated phone calling system.) If you have a change of or phone numbers let Karen in the office know ASAP. Jewish Temple Trip, March 10, 2:30: This is part of our curriculum for families with youth in 6 th grade. It is also open to our whole parish family! This trip takes us to a Jewish Temple in Ann Arbor where we will see, learn, and hear about their faith, come back here for quick pizza dinner and then go into church with Fr. Dave to have a comparison between our Jewish Heritage compared to our Catholic faith and Traditions. Sign up at the Formation Table. JWJ is July 29-Aug 2! We want to start planning for our Vacation Bible School. Here at St MM we call it Journey with Jesus or JWJ for short. If you are interested in being a part of the planning committee (it takes a lot of helping hands!) or want to get on our helper list, please sign up in the gathering area on the formation table. Meetings will start soon. Youth News from Margaret at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org and Stasia at tkcsmom@att.net This Tuesday, Feb 5th, there is an information meeting for our summer work service trip with the National Relief Network scheduled for July Come to find out what this trip is about. It will start at 7pm in the youth room. If you cannot make the meeting, please contact me via or in the parish offices. This weekend we will be standing out in the gathering area with empty pots and pans collecting money for our annual Souper Bowl Sunday collection. All this money we collect, we use to sponsor a child in Honduras for a year, we can donate to local charities, and we participate in adopting a family over the holidays. We thank you in advance for your generosity. For at least the past 12 years, the youth have been a huge part of the Tridium Liturgy reenacting the Passion of our Lord Jesus during the Good Friday service. It is a powerful experience both to witness and to be a part of. This could be your way of giving back to your community, your parish family, in a very special and meaningful way. For years now it has been the youth of the parish who have performed the Passion. If you are interested please contact me via at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org or in the parish offices. I ask that you talk it over with your family and even your friends to consider being a part of this wonderful reflection of all that Jesus suffered for you. Our annual winter weekend getaway is Feb There is still room for more, if you are interested! The total cost for the weekend is $100. Contact me at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org to sign up or if you have any questions. There is no youth group this weekend. EDGE Our next meeting is Monday, February 11. Come and check us out. A PRAYER FOR THIS SPECIAL YEAR Good and gracious God, we pray that every person in our diocese will come to know and love our Lord Jesus Christ in a personal way. May we mature as true disciples of Christ Jesus and may each of us become actively engaged in the life and mission of the Church, joyfully using his or her gifts for the building up of your kingdom. MEN S BREAKFAST In the parish bulletin, The Week Ahead column on page 3, you may have noted an entry for the 2 nd and 4 th Saturdays of the month, at 7:30 am, Men s Prayer Breakfast ; it sounds intriguing, and maybe a little intimidating. As the title indicates, it is for men only and we eat breakfast together in the lower level of the rectory. Following breakfast, someone who is comfortable with Scripture provides a very brief explanation of the upcoming Sunday s readings; then there is open discussion about how the readings intersect with our lives. Some men share their thoughts; others simply want to listen. God may be nudging you to something more, if you feel the tug come and see what it s about. If you would like more information contact Father Dave or one of the deacons. PROCLAIM CHRIST WITH JOY!
