1 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED IN JUST OVER TWO WEEKS It seems like we just took down the Christmas lights and now it s time to start thinking about Lent! Ash Wednesday is February 13!! So I invite you to begin thinking about how you will make the most of Lent this year. For some folks it can be an exercise in selfdiscipline. For forty days they eat less, or go without candy, desserts, alcohol or cigarettes. And while that is a good thing, a form of fasting, my hope is that we would consider doing something this Lent that would be transformative. By that, I mean our Lenten activity helps the one who does it to become a better Christian. The February Visionary will soon be available, and it will be filled with Lenten activities. It really is not too soon to begin looking at how each of us will make the most of Lent! MASS of ANOINTING The Sacrament of the Sick was once called Extreme Unction, which is Latin for last anointing, which is why some call it last rites. While it is true that sometimes I may anoint someone only once before they die, the Sacrament of the Sick is intended to be a prayer for healing and strength much more than a preparation for death. The main ingredient, the outward sign of this Sacrament of healing and strength is blessed olive oil! It is blessed by the bishop on Holy Thursday with over 1,000 people and 100 priests praying with him, that those who will be anointed with this will be healed! Vegetable oil is still used in the manufacture of most medicines. And ancient athletes believed using oil increased their strength. Who should receive the Sacrament of the Sick? Anyone who is suffering from a debilitating, chronic or life threatening illness should be anointed. Anyone preparing for surgery should be anointed and so should anyone in need of God s healing and the Church s prayer! It is a Sacrament that can be received as often as needed throughout an illness. We celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick on the last Wednesday of the month during the 7 pm Liturgy. Join us! TRAVELERS! The plans are now in the works for a trip to France as a parish trip in October, Most of the time will spent in and around Paris with a day trip to Vezelay and the tomb of St. Mary Magdalen. There will be a meeting near the end of February with more details. In the Fall of 2014 there will be a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Turkey. WINTER BREAK I am on a winter break this week. I appreciate Fr. Alan Wakefield filling in for me while I am away. I will be back in time for the Mass of Anointing on Wednesday and back in the office on January 31. And of course, I will be back with all of you next weekend! Fr. Dave Howell THIS WEEK S LITURGIES January 28, - Monday Saint Thomas Aquinas, Priest and Doctor of the Church Heb 9:15, 24-28/Mk 3: :00 am Communion Service January 29, Tuesday Heb 10:1-10/Mk 3: :00 am Communion Service January 30, Wednesday Heb 10:11-18/Mk 4:1-20 7:00 pm +Virginia Quinn Mass of Anointing January 31 Saint John Bosco, Priest Heb 10:19-25/Mk 4: :00 am +Rosemary Hamilton February 1, Friday Heb 10:32-39/Mk 4: :00 am +Kenneth J. It came when he was quite young. It also came at a time of turmoil when Babylon was in the process of conquering the entire Near East. For these reasons, Jeremiah felt uneasy about the call, but God refuses to take no for an answer. 1 Corinthians 12:31-13: 13 We will recognize today s passage from first Corinthians as one that is often read at weddings. Actually, the context is not marriage, but squabbles in the Christian community in Corinth over whose spiritual gifts were more important. Paul goes to the heart of the matter. Luke 4:21-30 The rage that fills those who hear Jesus words stems from their complacency. Nothing is as frightening as the complacent who are jolted from their smugness. The sin of these people is the sin of presumption thinking that their way to God is the only way. Tragically, presumptions inevitably blind us to moments of grace and the Holy Spirit. Reflect: Do I remain open to all possibilities in the arena of faith?

Scout Sunday, Feb. 3 at the 11:00 am Mass All Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts are invited to attend and celebrate Scout Sunday. Youth News from Margaret at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org and Stasia at tkcsmom@att.net For at least the past 12 years, the high school youth have been a huge part of the Triduum Liturgy reenacting the Passion of our Lord Jesus during the Good Friday service. It is a powerful experience both to witness and to be a part of. It does take commitment as practices are held weekly Sunday afternoons during Lent. I ask that you prayerfully consider participating. Perhaps this might be a good way to reconnect with God in a special way; to grow in relationship with Him. This could be your way of giving back to your community, your parish family, in a very special and meaningful way. It is a powerful witness of your faith to those who are present on Good Friday. I am in search of actors and actress who would be willing share of their time and talent this Lenten season; who would be willing to create a very powerful, prayerful and meaningful experience for the parish. For years now it has been the youth of the parish who have performed the Passion. It s expected that this will continue. If you are interested, please contact me via at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org or in the parish offices. I ask that you talk it over with your family and even your friends to consider being a part of this wonderful reflection of all that Jesus suffered for you. Our annual winter weekend getaway is Feb There is still room for more, if you are interested! There is a $50 balance due by months end. The total cost for the weekend is $100. Contact me at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org to sign up or if you have any questions. Looking ahead to summer, think about spending a week with us on our week-long service trip July 22-27, with the National Relief Network (NRN)! There is a meeting Tuesday, February 5th, at 7pm in the youth room. Plan to come with questions. Looking ahead we have a few things coming up worth marking your calendar for now. Weekend Winter Getaway Feb Money for WWG paid in full by month end Regional Spring Retreat March 8-11 Souper Bowl Sunday collection in February EDGE We meet this Monday evening. Come and check us out. We gather from 7-8:30 in the youth room and welcome any middle school student in grades 6-8.
