1 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 1 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED YEAR OF MERCY Pope Francis proclaimed a year of mercy that began on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8, 2015) and continues until the Feast of Christ the King (November 20, 2016). Throughout the year, we offer a monthly handout focusing on a Spiritual or a Corporal Work of Mercy. These works or actions of mercy, are deeply rooted in the Gospel. The Corporal Works of Mercy can be found mostly in Matthew 25 and the Spiritual Works are found in several places in the NT. The Physical or Corporal Works of Mercy are actions intended to create a better world. They are: feed the hungry; give drink to the thirsty; clothe the needy; visit the sick; visit the imprisoned; bury the dead; welcome the stranger. The Spiritual Works of Mercy seek to make us better people. They are: encourage the doubtful; share the Good News; encourage repentance; bear wrongs patiently; forgive offences willingly; comfort those who struggle; console the grieving. Each handout will include an explanation of the work and some practical ways we can make each act of mercy more a part of our lives. It will also include contact information to make it easier for you to have a quick way to contact an organization that focuses on that particular work of mercy. The handout will include a saint that exemplifies that particular work of mercy. Each of these saints are depicted in our own icons. Hopefully, it will make us more familiar with them. Finally, the handout will include special prayers: invoking the saint s intercession and a prayer for the Year of Mercy. The handout will be available all month long at the hymnal rack! CHILDREN S COLLECTION For over a year now, we have had a special children s collection at our weekend Liturgies. The money collected will go to Kids Against Hunger to feed other children nearby and in foreign lands. That may change in the future, but for the present, KAH is the recipient of the Children s collection. SEED MONEY Two years ago, we passed out $5,061 in Seed Money to 117 individuals or groups. They received $20-$100 and over several months they used their talents & creativity to make it more. Eventually, we received the $5,061 back along with $35,000 more! The Finance Council has approved using parish funds for Seed Money this year. So beginning in July, the deacons will pass out $20-$100 to anyone who is willing to use their talents to make it more. Again, the money raised will be used for Kids Against Hunger! Fr. This brief passage we will hear today is puzzling. A person is depicted as suffering and dying for the people, but we don t know who it is. In the Gospel of John, this passage as applied to Jesus on the Cross, pierced with a lance. Galatians 3: Today we hear one of the most famous passages from Paul s letter to the Galatians. In that culture and at that time, it was a remarkable statement against any form of ethnic, religious or gender discrimination. Luke 9: As at other significant moments in Jesus ministry, Luke presents Jesus at prayer. Jesus waits for this time away from the crowds, to pose a key question to his disciples. Discover the question that really matters. Reflect: How do you shoulder the obligation to intercede for those weaker than yourself?

Before you know it, we ll be all bundled up talking about how cold it is! Youth News Margaret at yminister1@gmail.com Jillian at jilliankillian25@gmail.com I am accepting donations for the Tin Can Raffle that takes place during our parish picnic in September. If you come across something that you think would be a great donation, you can bring it in to my office. I thank you in advance for your help with this fun and exciting part of the annual picnic. Thank you to the Schulte Family for opening their home to us for our last Youth Group meeting of the school year. It was a great evening full of fun, friendship and food. Although it was a bit chilly, most everyone went swimming and enjoyed the water. Thank you again for providing us with a great place to gather together for fun. This weekend, many of us are away in Brooklyn, MI working the races at MIS. We clean all weekend long after spectators and have been known to dive elbow deep into the garbage cans for empties to bring home for change. It s a fun weekend where we get to spend time together in the evenings around a camp bonfire singing, telling stories and playing games. All the monies raised and earned will help participants pay for our summer work service trip. I know a few schools are still in session this week and even next week. I pray for you all to stay focused and centered enough to get all your work done. The summer weather makes it tough. Soon your days will be filled with more fun than you can handle. Next Sunday the 19 th, we will send off five teens to the Diocesan Youth Leadership Camp. It is a great, awesome week where they will learn about leadership, grow tremendously in their faith and meet tons of other high school students from across the diocese! Our own Emily Wolfe has been working all year to prepare for this week as she was selected to be a camp leader last spring. I am excited for them all!! On June 29 th, we are going to Cedar Point. We will travel by bus with St. John s in Hartland. If you are interested in coming along, the cost is $70 for your ticket and bus transportation. Food for the day is extra. Checks can be made out to St Mary Magdalen. RSVP your intentions to yminister1@gmail.com.
