2 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED THE VISIONS CONTINUE!! This Second Sunday of Easter we hear the story of the appearance of the Risen Lord the Sunday after Easter. The story will focus on Thomas the apostle who was missing the week before when Christ Jesus appeared to the disciples the first time. Next Sunday we will hear the Easter Sunday story of Christ s appearance to two of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. All this is a little out of order since we switch from the second Sunday back to Easter, the reason is important. The Second Sunday of Easter completes a whole week, 8 days in fact, of recounting the different appearances of the Risen Lord! It is intended to help us really understand the meaning and significance of Christ s resurrection The Gospel of next Sunday will repeat the story of disciples encounter with the Risen Lord on the road to Emmaus. It will also show us how we, His modern disciples, encounter Him on our journey of faith as well. WELCOME KNIGHTS! This Saturday evening we welcome the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus to our parish. They will hold an exemplification or initiation of new members in the afternoon. This evening these newest Knights, their wives and other members of the 4th Degree from this area, have joined us for Liturgy. Afterward they will have a banquet in our Community Room. Welcome! A NEW SECRETARY After many years of being the voice and face of St. Mary Magdalen Parish, Debbie Dehanke has decided to retire from her position as parish secretary June 1. This means we have begun the process of looking for a new secretary to join our parish staff. After discussing the position with the other 3 part-time secretaries, we have adjusted the new position to 24 hours a week from mid-august until the end of May. After Memorial Day, until mid-august, it is 16 hours per week. The salary is $14-16 and hour depending on the skills and experience of the applicant; sick days, personal days and two weeks of vacation are included. A welcoming personality and computer skills are very important. Applications can be found at our parish website and in my office and must be submitted by 7 pm, May 3. GONE Next weekend Fr. Dave Harvey will be back with us to take my place. I am off to my younger cousin s wedding to spend some time with family. I will also be taking some time off afterward. I will be back in office on Friday, May 5 in time for rehearsal for First Eucharist which will take place the weekend of May 6 & 7! Fr. Dave Howell 2 THIS WEEK S LITURGIES April 24, Monday Acts 4:23-31/Jn 3:1-8 9:00 am All our Catechists and Aides April 25, Tuesday, St. Mark the Evangelist 1 Pt 5:5b-14/Mk 16: :00 am Communion Service April 26, Wednesday Acts 5:17-26/Jn 3: :00 pm St. Mary Magdalen Staff April 27, Thursday Acts 5:27-33/Jn 3: :00 am First Eucharist Candidates April 28, Friday Acts 5:34-42/Jn 6:1-15 9:00 am Members of Our Ministry Teams April 29, Saturday, St. Catherine of Siena, Virgin and Doctor of the Church Acts 6:1-7/Jn 6:16-21 April 30, Sunday Acts 2:14,22-33/1 Pt 1:17-21/Lk 24: :30 pm Vigil +Edward Gosbeth 9:00 am +Jean Schultz 11:00 am St. Mary Magdalen Parishioners THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER Acts 2: 14, None of the Scripture readings during the seven-week Easter season are from the Old Testament. But the book of Acts, which is read every Sunday during Easter, frequently quotes Old Testament passages which the early Christians saw as fulfilled in Jesus. Today s reading gives part of Peter s sermon at the first Pentecost. Peter quotes from Psalm 16 which, like most of the Psalms, was popularly thought to be written by David. 1 Peter 1: The Christians for whom the first letter of Peter was written, were recent converts from paganism. They found themselves a small minority in pagan surroundings. Their neighbors and local authorities made life miserable for them. Today s passage offers encouragement by reminding them that Jesus died and rose for them. Luke 24: This reading from the end of the Gospel of Luke has made an immeasurable contribution to our sacramental theology and to the celebration of the Eucharist. Like the two disciples in the reading, the Church comes together on the first day of the week. The stranger explained the scriptures to them as does the priest or deacon today. The risen Christ is with the two just as in the Church today. Finally, the sign in which the risen Christ is recognized is in the bread, broken and shared. Reflect: When do you feel closest to Jesus?

Women s Retreat: April Each year, the Lansing Diocese offers retreats of various lengths for Parish members to get away for a while to rest, pray and attend to your relationship with your Creator and Redeemer. Women and friends of St. Mary Magdalen Parish are invited to the following retreat experience. Give yourself this gift. Theme: Mass Matters: We Are Called To Glory. Director: Father David Rosenberg Friday, 6 pm with dinner following until Sunday, 1:30 pm. Suggested Donation $175. To Register, call or or see Sr. Joyce. St. Francis Retreat Center, DeWitt is offering this retreat for women of several parishes including St. Augustine, Howell, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti parishes. Carpooling is an option. Called By Name Everyone knows someone who no longer has zest for Communal Church Worship, who lets other events take priority. The Bible gives continual expressions of God calling us back to worship Him, the one true God. Please pray for your family and friends by name, to be open to return and take a fresh look and commitment to our Catholic faith. Consider inviting them to a Parish activity. CHARITY & JUSTICE Caring for Home Sweet Home April is Environmental Awareness Month. During the month, we observe Earth Day on the 22 nd and Arbor Day on the 29 th. As Catholics, we are encouraged to be people who recycle in an effort to protect and respect God s creation. A container is on the Charity & Justice table in the gathering space to collect dead batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9 volt and flat cells), so they can be properly disposed of. The container looks similar to a Duracell Battery, it will be available through the end of April. Spring Clothing Drive It s time again. Our Semi-annual St. Vincent de Paul clothing drive is May 20 and 21, In the metropolitan Detroit area, the St Vincent de Paul Society has over 2,000 volunteers assisting 30,000 local households annually. The money earned through their thrift stores, which is supported by donations like ours, helps to make the many charitable works they do possible. Please bring your gently used clothing and linens (in bags, no boxes please) to the pods located in the rear of the church parking lot on May 20/21. We will be handing out bags the weekend of May 13/14 as a reminder. Thank you for helping this wonderful organization. In this journey we seek to know God, self and others in a deep, loving, understanding way, so our life story with God can be told. It takes another spiritual soul like a spiritual director/companion to walk with us as we seek God s desires for the needs of our soul. In our journey, a Spiritual Director companions the seeker in a loving way of presence to help one truly see self through God s eyes, which helps us see the true gift we are. It is a blessed time of transformation; a sacred time in gathering inner strength. A spiritual director/companion guides another to view daily life experiences through the eyes of God and to see God s work in all realities of life. In spiritual direction, God s love flows from one soul to another, for it is God who is the director and the force of love within us all. If you would like to have conversation about receiving Spiritual Direction, contact Linda Chevalier of St. Mary Magdalen parish. Linda is a commissioned Spiritual Director in Ignatian Spirituality and is available to any Christian for one-on-one spiritual direction. You may contact Linda at: or chevalierlinda@att.net.
