1 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE Last week, I reminded you of the origins of the Vision Statement that hangs in the Gathering Area. More importantly, I told you of how it continues to be used to provide direction to our community. There are several other comments that were voiced in the course of those 25 small group meetings that still affect the way our parish operates. The reason why our Blessed Sacrament Chapel at the back of the building is open 24\7 is because several folks wanted a place to come and pray at any time of day. We have an annual sign up for all of our ministry teams and other ministries as a way of avoiding cliques -- having only a chosen few run things. We have very few restrictions on who can serve, most ministries are open to every parish member. Again, I want to thank Patti and Mark Mohrenweiser who redid the calligraphy and reframed the Vision for our Gathering Area. THE GROUND BREAKING Last Sunday afternoon I attended the ground breaking of St. Paul s renovation. It was a very spirited and enjoyable service celebrating the completion of a great deal of planning. Their original plans were for something a bit grander than what they have undertaken. But as so often happens, the cost and the cash did not match so it was back to the drawing board. That happened to us in both our projects. Back in 1996 our construction budget was $2.4 million and the estimate for what we had planned to build was $4.2 million. That changed everything, and we ended up with a building 25% smaller as a result. Similar changes were made along the way with our planning in St. Paul will undertake a substantial renovation of their present building with a new connector to make it all much more accessible. And none of it comes too soon. The week after their congregation began worshiping in our chapel, part of the ceiling collapsed where their old and newer buildings connected! Once more as I stood among the folks of St. Paul, they were effusive in their thanks for hosting them during the renovation work. The money saved from not having to rent facilities for their Sunday services will make it possible for them to do a little more renovating. The work on St. Paul will continue soon and will last until next spring. One last thing: the service began with All Are Welcome, the same hymn that began our Sunday Liturgies, and more importantly, it was the opening hymn for our dedication Liturgy in 2010! Fr. Dave Howell THIS WEEK S LITURGIES August 26, Monday 1 Thes 1:1-5, 8b-10/Mt 23: :00 am +Silvia Ropertil August 27, Tuesday Saint Monica 1 Thes 2:1-8/Mt 23: :00 am Communion Service August 28, Wednesday - Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church 1 Thes 2:9-13/Mt 23: :00 pm +Richard Harris 7:00 pm Mass of Anointing August 29, Thursday - The Passion of Saint John the Baptist 1 Thes 3:7-13/Mk 6: :00 am +Ruth Howelll Aug 30, Friday 1 Thes 4:1-8/Mt 25:1-13 9:00 am +Tom Zuyus Aug 31, Saturday 1 Thes 4:9-11/Mt 25:14-30 Sept 1, Sunday Sir 3:17-18, 20, 28-29/Heb 12:18-19, 22-24a/Lk 14:1, :30 pm Vigil +Maureen Murphy 9 am St. Mary Magdalen Parishioners 11 am +Catherine Monk TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Sirach 3:17 20, The book of Sirach was written by a wise teacher who lived 200 years before Christ. Sirach ran a school for young people in Jerusalem. In today s section, he gives his students a string of wise sayings that will guide them in their conduct. Hebrews 12:18-19, In today s reading from the letter to the Hebrews, the author contrasts two covenants. He begins with the covenant of Mount Sinai, which was ratified amid fire and darkness. Then he speaks of the new covenant established by Jesus at Mount Zion (which is another name for Jerusalem). The author then looks ahead to a glorious future in the heavenly Jerusalem. Luke 14:1, 7-14 Once again Luke finds Jesus at table, but not with social outcasts this time. Here he dines with religious leaders and takes this opportunity to teach some important qualities of discipleship and holiness. Even more, he teaches about the nature of God. Reflect: How do I invite the poor into my home?

A 120 foot collage is being created that will span the North and East hallways. Our plan is to include pictures of events and people that will help tell the story of our community over the past 20 years! We have some pictures, but they only tell part of our story. We want to add your pictures (all kinds of pictures): Baptisms, First Communions, other special events. So if you have pictures (that we can keep) please put them in the special picture box at the Activity Table in the Gathering Area. Please make sure they are dated (at least the year) and list those pictured in the photo (if you can). Thank you! Pre-School Time for Registration the Pre-School program provides a Christian education, in a caring environment, for young children. Play is a very important part of the preschool classroom, and much of the learning takes place through teacher-directed and self-directed play activities. Our program will provide opportunities for the children to grow spiritually, socially, intellectually, emotionally, and physically, and to gain confidence in their God-given abilities We still have some openings for three-year-olds and would love to have you join us. August 28: The Last Things This Life and the Life Yet to Come Florence, Ireland, Rome, France The New Evangelization St. Mary Magdalen Parish offers abundant opportunities for us to grow in our faith, prayer, and service. Just because they are offered does not mean that participation is abundant. I am edified of the retired teachers who continue to study with us and value lifetime learning. The purpose of the New Evangelization is to re-engage those Catholics that are disengaged in practice of the faith. Some statistics: many claim to be Catholic by Baptism but rarely if ever participate with the Church Community; 1% attend Mass; 36% of registered Catholics attend Mass weekly, 50 % do not believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Where am I in my lived Catholic Faith? Divorce and Beyond is for people who are already divorced or have filed for divorce. It examines what happens to most spouses going through marital breakup and helps participants understand what they are going through and that others have gone through the same things, It teaches how to make divorce a growth experience.
