2 ST. MARY MAGDALEN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED CELEBRATING FREEDOM This week, our country celebrates the 241 st anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. While there is no great significance to the number of this anniversary, it is an important anniversary none the less. The purpose of the Declaration was to provide a clear and unambiguous explanation of the actions of the 13 colonies that were governed by Great Britain. While we were not the first people to break away from a distant, unjust government even the Bible gives several examples, we were the first people to list our grievances and reasons. The document states: We hold these truths to be self-evident..: Perhaps one of the most disappointing casualties of political discourse in our country is loss of truth. Too often personal opinions and prejudices are confused with facts and people on every side of the discussions fail to seek the truth. Over the last several years I have grown increasingly fond of Jesus statement: If you are truly my disciples, you will know the truth and the truth will set you free! (John 8:32) My prayer for this country is that all Americans, especially those who are Christians, will rise above party, politics and personal opinion and seek the truth that gives all of us genuine freedom. RETREAT Retreats are important to spiritual growth. They provide an opportunity to step back, quiet down and seek God s guidance. Retreats offer a chance for intense and uninterrupted prayer. Over the years, I have gone on directed retreats given to a group; private retreats using a book or a series of talks; and private, directed retreats. Most retreats are a few days, some longer even up to 30 days! Except for a 30 day retreat, all of them have been a part of my experience. And more than a few homilies have been a result of the insights gained during those retreats. My most significant retreats have been private, directed retreats. They have been important in providing direction for my life. My first was before I was ordained a deacon, and then, before I was ordained a priest. I have done a couple during times of sabbatical and transition. It has been a few years since the last one so I felt the need to make time for one now. So on Friday, I will leave for Loyola on the Potomac for an 8 day private, directed retreat with the Jesuits. I ask that you keep me and my director in your prayers. Hopefully, the Lord will provide the direction. MISSION APPEAL While I am gone on retreat, Fr. Bill Augh will be doing an appeal for the support of his mission to Mayan community of Mexico. I hope you will be generous! Fr. Dave Howell 2 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary BRIGHTON, MI THIS WEEK S LITURGIES July 3, Monday, Saint Thomas, Apostle Eph 2:19-22/Jn 20: :00 am +Robert & Virginia Kerwin July 4, Tuesday Gn 19:15-29/Mt 8: :00 am Communion Service July 5, Wednesday Gn 21:5, 8-20a/Mt 8: :00 pm +Mark Atwood July 6, Thursday Gn 22:1b-19/Mt 9:1-8 9:00 am +Keith Dunn & Jan Jandasek July 7, Friday Gn 23:1-4,19;24:1-8,62-67/Mt 9:9-13 9:00 am Communion Service July 8, Saturday Gn 27:1-5, 15-29/Mt 9:14-17 July 9, Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time Zec 9:9-10/Rom 8:9, 11-13/Mt 11: :30 pm Vigil +Jan Baldinger 9:00 am St. Mary Magdalen Parishioners 11:00 am +Daniel Keefe Zechariah 9: 9-10 In the centuries before Christ, the Jewish people hoped for a triumphant Messiah king. The prophet Zechariah spoke instead of a Messiah who would come not in splendor and glory with horses and chariots, but rather in lowliness and peace, riding a common work animal. All four evangelists will later apply this passage to the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem several days before his arrest. Romans 8:9, Today we will begin five Sundays of readings from chapter eight of Paul s letter to the Romans, a chapter which emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit. Paul wants us to remember that the Spirit who will raise our bodies on the last day is the same Spirit who enlivens us for holiness every day. Today Paul offers a sharp contrast between life in the flesh (meaning, life prone to sin) and life in the Spirit. Matthew 11: Jesus gives thanks to his father for the revelation given to the little one those who are receptive as opposed to those who are closed because they believe they are wise. We pray for eternal rest for those who have died, a rest free of burdens. The rest that Jesus promises for us today is a joyful refreshment in the midst of the burdens of life, and is a secure communion with God, God s people, and creation. Reflect: How secure are you in Jesus the Christ?

4 ST. MARY MAGDALEN RELIGIOUS FORMATION NEWS YOUTH NEWS BRIGHTON, MI Happy Fourth of July The following is a quote by John Adams, one of our country s Founding Fathers, in regards to the 4th of July. It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with shows, games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. As American s we carry out the Pomp and Parade and the activities that follow with great certainty. We struggle more and more with the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. Sometimes I look at this holiday as a great time to celebrate with family members, not only to celebrate the birth of our country, but the birth of my daughter and her daughter, who both were born on July 3. It has not been a practice of mine to attend Mass on the 4th of July if it falls on a weekday. But now I go back to this great quote of John Adam s, written July 2, 1776 to his wife Abigail in reference to our Independence from Great Britain. How can we as Christians bring alive his message given well over 200 years ago? We need to change our own direction. I believe it is necessary to share with my family and friends that we owe it to our Great Nation to attend Mass or a prayer service. Possibly offer a prayer at our gatherings where we come together to celebrate with B-B-Q or fireworks etc. I will encourage them if they are uncomfortable with this task to briefly remind those gathered, of the state our nation currently is in, and to use this quote from John Adams to kick off their prayer. Hope to see you in church on the 4th. Peace ~ Roxanne Hundsrucker Journey with Jesus Vacation Bible School Children 4yrs old through 5th grade are welcome to participate. Children grades 6-12 are needed to help during the week. Journey with Jesus will take place July 31 through August 4. Registration forms can be filled out and turned in on the Religious Formation counter in the Gathering Area. OUR DEADLINE IS JULY 16, Happy Fourth of July! With summer in full swing now, and this being a holiday weekend, I pray this finds you and your family safe and having lots of fun! These summer months are more relaxed and the opportunities to be with family and friends more often is a wonderful thing. I could write about my personal family plans but I am sure many of you have plans enough of your own to think about. I pray God is with you in all of your travels, campfires, back yard BBQ s and gatherings. I have to think that Jesus had his fair share of late night, back deck fun with his friends just like we do. Put out an extra chair, have an open mind about who to include and see if he shows up. Our first summer evening gathering outdoors is Tuesday July 11 th. We will gather about 8:30 for a bonfire and an outdoor movie when it gets darker. To be on top of these events, sign up for the Remind texts by to the number You can also access the google calendar of YG events by ing a request for the link at yminister1@gmail.com Right now, until I figure out otherwise, you will need a google account for the access to work. 6 ST. MARY MAGDALEN ACTIVITIES SCHEDULE Mon July 3 - Tue July 4 - Wed July 5 - Thu July 6 8:30 am Zumba Fri July 7 - Sat July 8 - Sun July 9 - How Can I Help Saint Mary Magdalen Parish Financially? As a new parish member, I have found the people, the pastor, and the parish facilities here at St. Mary Magdalen amazing. This is a big operation with many facets and costs. How can I best support this financially? Though making monthly contributions and participating in Witness To Hope, I would like to do more. That can be difficult, especially when retired. As a retired estate-planning attorney, the following is my plan. All our assets together make up our estate. For many people, the most useful tool for passing these on is a Revocable Living Trust, usually with children as the beneficiaries. We feel it important to do something for charities. I believe that 90% of our estate is sufficient to pass on to our children. The remaining 10% we consider trust tithe. At our previous location in Plymouth, I was a founding member of the Community Foundation of Plymouth which has many valid goals. Therefore, our plan is to give 1/2 of our trust tithe to Community Foundation of Plymouth and the other 1/2 to St. Mary Magdalen. This is relatively painless in that it does not come out of our monthly budget. It also has the advantage of growing or declining with the size of the estate so the percentage stays at 10%. Most estates, by far, go up rather than down. As Catholics who wish to support tour Church, this form of tithing, an ancient tradition of Christians, is worthy of consideration. Bill Lawson BRIGHTON, MI Ever wonder about the Biblical roots of our Catholic faith? Do you wish you knew more about the Bible?
