1 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 1 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED THIS WEEK S LITURGIES DSA 2014 The Diocesan Services Appeal (DSA) provides funds for almost 100 different services and programs across the 10 county area of the Diocese of Lansing. These services are provided to all 85 parishes and students on three university campuses and several college campuses. There are 6 social service agencies providing counseling, substance abuse services, foster parent & adoption services. Plus DSA helps fund the education of future priests, deacons and lay ministers. As of this date, we received $16,062 toward our parish goal of $85,281. If you have made a pledge, thank you! If you haven t yet, please join me in making a pledge or gift to DSA 2014! COMMUNAL CELEBRATIONS During these last few weeks of Lent there will be 8 opportunities to celebrate the richness of God s mercy. I hope you and your family will take advantage of one of them. Wed. April 2 (7 pm) St. Mary, Pinckney Thurs, April 3 (7 pm) St. Augustine, Deerfield Twp Thurs, April 7 (7 pm) Holy Spirit, Hamburg Wed, April 9 (7:30 pm) St. John, Hartland Sat, April 12 (9 am) St. Patrick, Brighton Sun, April 13 (3 pm) St. Agnes. Fowlerville Mon, April 14 (7:30 pm) St. Mary Magdalen A HOLY LAND PIGRIMAGE As I mentioned last week, we are planning a two-week pilgrimage to the Holy Land from October It will be two travel days and then 12 days in the Holy Land. Our goal is to visit a few more places, provide a little more time at special sites, keep the days a little less full and provide for some free time in the old city of Jerusalem. For those who may be interested, there will an additional trip to Petra in Jordan. The cost of the pilgrimage, including airfare, lodging and ground transportation, taxes, tips and most meals will be about $4,500 per person (the trip to Petra will be more.) Those who are interested are invited to a meeting Sunday, April 27 at 4 pm. DIFFERENT VOICES During the season of Lent we have been especially blessed with reflections from several different people at Evening Prayer on Mondays and Stations of the Cross on Fridays. Both give us the opportunity to hear the heartfelt and prayerful reflections of different men and women from our community. This week Mary Alice Galloway will do the reflection at Monday Evening Prayer and Erin Wolf at Friday Stations at 7 pm. I hope you will join us for the prayer and these special reflections during our Lenten Journey. Fr. In today s passage, the prophet (using the image of death and resurrection) assures the people that God will one day bring them back to their homeland. Romans 8:8-11 Paul s letter to the Romans is his most detailed and important theological work. Throughout the letter, he teaches that Jesus overcame sin and the effects of sin. In today s passage, Paul stresses that through the Spirit, this saving power of Jesus is present and active in Christians of all times and places. John 11:1-45 John s strange and wonderful story about the raising of Lazarus is filled with strong emotions, dramatic scenes, and profound teaching about the person of Jesus. The combination of narratives with discussion is explained by the fact that John has taken a preexisting account of Lazarus being brought back to life and has overlaid it with his own special style of teaching. Reflect: Are there parts of your life that Jesus has called back to life? What are they?

3 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 3 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN Religious Formation News from Mary at mmahar@parishmail.com and Karen at sect2@saintmarymagdalen.org Youth News from Margaret at yminister1@gmail.com And Stasia at stasiaeisenhut@gmail.com Home Study: Our last meeting is today at 10:15! Class Seder Meals: Our Wed/Thurs classes are ending with Seder Meals at each session hosted by our 6 th grade classes. Help is needed preparing on Tuesday, April 8, at 6:30, and then during each session with set up, prep, and clean up. Let me know if you can help! Registration for fall classes starts this week! We are placing emphasis on Liturgy attendance for our families, so when you register you will be asked to read and sign your intent to participate and attend Sunday Liturgy. Registration will begin April 2,3,6,9, and 10. The Sunday registration will take place in the West Wing formation workroom. Register early to get the class you want-regardless of ability to pay. Last Classes will be April 6, 9, 10. On Sunday, April 6 th, the gym doors will be open for you to walk through and view the Stations of the Cross presented by each of the families in our Family Program. Our Wed/Thurs classes will end with a Seder Meal hosted by our 6 th grade at each of the class times. Help is need, call me if you can assist. First Eucharist: Retreat is Sat., April 26. Information has been mailed/ ed out; please register as soon as you can so we know how many adults are attending with your youth. WE NEED YOU! Our children need leaders to share our faith with them. We have two lead each class to help each other and we offer training for you as well. We want to start classes earlier in September next fall, so we need to train earlier as well. Please call me for more information. JWJ, our summer Vacation Bible School, is scheduled for July 28-Aug 1. We need leaders for the planning of our Vacation Bible School. Here at St MM we call it Journey with Jesus or JWJ for short. If you are interested in being a part of the planning committee (it takes a lot of helping hands!) or want to get on our helper list, please sign up in the gathering area at the formation table, or talk with Stephanie Darish. Visit the Formation section of our website at for class information! Have a great week. It is not too late to order your Dearborn Ham and Meats for your Easter dining pleasure. The delivery date is Tuesday of Holy Week, April 15 (Tax Day!). You can pick up your prepaid order here in the church gathering area anytime 5-7pm. All proceeds made will help offset youth group events and activities, especially our summer work service trip. On Saturday, April 5, we are hosting a Spud Night. It is a potato bar full of all your favorite toppings; including nacho cheese, chives, sour cream, even chili! There will be salad, pop and desserts. Donations will be taken at the door, as all proceeds from the dinner will go toward helping cut the cost for our trip. It is a fun night out with good food, for a good cause and an opportunity to learn more about the National Relief Network and the trip. I would like to thank Jennie Ross for giving of her time and talent again this year to the Passion Play reenactment from our youth. Practices will continue through Palm Sunday 3-5pm. During the Good Friday service the teens will perform this well-prepared reenactment of the Gospel. Thank you to all the teens involved. It is not easy to give up your free time on the weekend. You provide the community with a very prayerful, meaningful experience; a chance to reflect on the life of Jesus and what He suffered for us. You are gift to us here and we are blessed! EDGE WOW has this year flown by! We have our last two meetings this month, and one of them is an EDGE Night Out to Rollerama/Zap Zone on Monday, April 7. The cost is $20, which includes pizza, pop, cake, one game of laser tag, rentals for skating, and includes a lot of fun! I will have permission slips on the 24th. Our last bi-monthly meeting is Monday, April 28. We celebrate the year looking back at all the fun we had and enjoying the scripture cards and goodies handed out. We ll celebrate with cake and crazy hats! Even if you only came a few times, please come join us for this yearend celebration!

4 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT page 4 MARCH 30, 2014 Adult Education and Formation Faith and Service - From Sr. Joyce pastmin1@saintmarymagdalen.org Easter Candy Request - The people in the Family Program generously and swiftly filled several thousand plastic Easter Eggs for our annual Egg Scramble on Holy Saturday. We still have a few more candies that are individually wrapped to put in a few hundred eggs. A basket is at the Community Life board if you can bring some. Peter Rabbit and his helpers thank You! On Palm Sunday - Once again this year we will have Palm Crafters in the Community Room after each of the Liturgies to help us create crosses, crowns, Chi Rho s and other items from the blessed palms we receive that day, April 12 & 13. Anyone interested in helping, please contact Sr. Joyce or just come to the Community Room after the Mass you attend. Seder Meal - Our annual Ritual Seder Meal and potluck is Wed., April 16, at 6:30 pm in the Community Room. This is an excellent teaching tool and prayer experience for school-age children and everyone older. The Jewish Seder, the Passover, was Jesus Last Supper and the origin of the Eucharist. This evening will lead us deeper into the holiest days of Holy Week, the Triduum. Please feel free to make and share a Jewish dish or food at the potluck. We will have a card indicating each Jewish food. Please invite your extended families and friends and sign up at the Community Life Board if you are attending so we know how many to expect. Lenten Bread & Soup Suppers - Calling Soup Makers: Please sign up at the Community Life Board if you would like to make a pot of your favorite meatless Lenten soup or loaf of bread. Our evening meals will be at 6 pm every Lenten Friday. The alms will be given to Magdalen s Kitchen Ministry. This is a family meal prior to the evening Stations of the Cross at 7 pm. We plan to serve about 30+ people. Please contact Jerry & Pat Bessesen with questions. Adult Confirmation Classes: Adults who have not yet received the sacrament of Confirmation can attend 6 classes after Easter to prepare them for receiving this sacrament on Pentecost Sunday, June 8, at 11 am Liturgy. Classes begin Thursday, May 1, at 7 pm. Contact Sr. Joyce if you wish to attend. Women s Retreat for St. Mary Magdalen will be April St. Francis Retreat Center - DeWitt, MI. The Theme is: God s GPS: The Power of the Mass in Our Daily Lives. The Goal is: Living the Mass. The retreat will cover some of the most important aspects of worship and how they can influence and direct our lives. Topics include: Why Worship God, The Importance of Gathering, God Present in the Word, Gifts Shared and the Great Gift of the Eucharist. Suggested Offering: $140. See Sr. Joyce to Register and/or carpool. CHARITY & JUSTICE CORNER MAGDALEN S KITCHEN SIGN-UP Names of those interested in serving at Magdalen s Kitchen for the Mondays of April and May 5 and 12 are being accepted. Sign-up sheets are organized by date and are near the Charity and Justice table in the Gathering Space. Future dates (second half of May and June) will be posted the end of April. SENIOR EASTER GIVING TREE The Senior Easter Tree of Life is in our gathering area. Tags on the tree represent the needs of Senior Citizens from Livingston County Catholic Charities, the Veterans Hospital of Ann Arbor and Medilodge, as well as Brighton, Hartland and Howell Senior Centers. Please help us to provide basic need items for our Seniors. Please take a tag and return your donation, with the tag taped securely, no later than Sunday, April 6th. We cannot guarantee delivering gifts in time for Easter if they are left after April 6th. PLEASE DO NOT WRAP ANY THE GIFTS. THANK YOU. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dianne Sweeter at or dsweeter@yahoo.com. BATTERY COLLECTION During the month of April, Charity and Justice is going to help you to recycle by collecting your used batteries. Batteries often contain heavy metals that are extremely detrimental to groundwater. Simply bring them with you to church and there will be a receptacle in the Gathering Space on the Charity and Justice table. It is requested that you place a piece of tape over the ends to prevent the possibility of fire. Labor of Love 2014 Project Day On Saturday, May 3, 2014, you can help a disabled, or elderly, or financially challenged neighbor with home repairs, cleaning, or yard work. Young people from our youth group have participated the last few years in rake and run, and a number of parishioners have participated in other projects. It is easy to register for this event on-line by googling Labor of Love Livingston County; you must register by April 18, For more information contact Deacon Gary or Margaret Callaghan at
