1 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 1 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED A VERY SPECIAL FEAST!! This weekend the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul, the two great preachers of Christ, replaces the Thirteenth Sunday of the year. This feast celebrates the dedication of the two great churches built in Rome over their tombs in the fourth century. On June 29, 1993, on this feast, Bishop Povish created a new parish in Brighton Township. On that same date, five years later, Bishop Carl Mengeling dedicated our church and consecrated it to the praise and worship of God. So this weekend we celebrate three great events: the dedication of the basilicas of Sts. Peter and Paul in Rome and the Church of St. Mary Magdalen in Brighton. We also celebrate three great people: the Apostles Peter and Paul and the people of this community! As St. Paul said in his letter to Timothy: May God who began this great work, bring it to its fulfillment! Amen! TURNING 21! Monday, June 30, is the Memorial of the Martyrs of Rome. It commemorates the many men and women who died for their faith during the years of persecution in Rome. These persecutions began with Emperor Nero after the great fire of Rome in 66 AD and continued sporadically until 314 AD. Altogether there were 10 periods of persecution most of which happened primarily in Rome. The most wide spread persecution occurred during the reign of the Emperor Diocletian ( AD) in which as many as 20,000 Christians were put to death. I mention this because it was on this feast on June 30, 1993, Bishop Povish appointed me pastor of the new parish in Brighton Township. HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE My first pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1984 proved to be an experience that truly changed the way I read and understand the Scriptures. Over the years, I have taken four groups to hopefully share with them what I gained from my pilgrimage. A few folks have asked me to lead another pilgrimage one more time. So I have planned another pilgrimage to the Holy Land from October 13 to 26. This time the pilgrimage will include two travel days and 12 days in the Holy Land. The idea is to stretch it out a bit longer to provide folks the opportunity to spend more time at each stop and have some free time as well. The cost of the pilgrimage, including airfare, lodging and ground transportation, taxes, tips and most meals will be about $4,500 per person. Even though we are not going until October, the deadline to join the pilgrimage is this month so that all the reservations can be made. Contact me if you would like more information. Fr. The prophet Zechariah spoke instead of a messiah who would come not in splendor and glory with horses and chariots, but rather in lowliness and peace, riding a common work animal. All four evangelists will later apply this passage to the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem several days before his arrest. Romans 8:9, Today and for many Sundays hereafter, our second reading will be taken from Paul s letter to the Romans. Today we will begin five Sundays of readings from chapter eight of Paul s letter to the Romans, a chapter which emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit. Paul wants us to remember that the Spirit who will raise our bodies on the last day is the same Spirit who enlivens us for holiness every day. Today Paul offers a sharp contrast between life in the flesh (meaning, life prone to sin) and life in the Spirit. Matthew 11:25-30 This passage occurs in the Gospel according to Matthew at the point where increased opposition from Jewish leaders begins to appear and Jesus reprimands the unrepentant people in the towns where his mighty deeds had been done. Today s Gospel begins on a positive note. Reflect: What do you think Jesus wants to tell you when he says: learn from me for I am meek, and humble of heart?

The Adrian Dominican Sisters are sponsoring a celebration of St. Mary of Magdala Proclaiming the Good News on Sunday, July 20th at Corpus Christi Catholic Church Pembroke Avenue Detroit from 3:00-5:00 pm. I am planning on going and if anyone would like to join me, please call me. It would be wonderful to have the community of Saint Mary Magdalen in Brighton be with our sisters to see this presentation. Sister Maryetta Youth News from Margaret at yminister1@gmail.com And Stasia at stasiaeisenhut@gmail.com Our destination for this summer s work service trip as of right now is Mayflower, AR. In early April of this past spring, this community was hit with a devastating, deadly tornado. The area is still very much in need of help. When we take over 40 teens and adults from our parish alone and join with over another 30 from St. John s and St. Augustine s we are providing help for these victims. Not only do we physically help by cleaning up or helping to rebuild but every time we listen to their story or share tears, we are lifting a burden. Our mission of the trip is to be the hands and feet of Jesus; to spread hope and love to those who feel forgotten. Pray for our upcoming trip, and for the victims of storms everywhere! This Monday June 30, there is a very important meeting for everyone participating in this service trip at 7pm at St. John s in Hartland in their worship space. Please make plans to attend this. There will be ice cream afterwards! Should you want to help and volunteer your time with the teens of St. Mary Magdalen in the youth ministry program, contact me at yminister1@gmail.com and we can talk. Maybe you have talent you would like to share or a powerful story of faith you can tell us. Be a part of their journey by becoming involved. It is a rewarding experience, one that I cannot describe. You need to become involved to know the positive power of our youth! To reach me during the summer, it is best to do so at yminister1@gmail.com or in the office from 8-noon. Congratulations to Allie Darish, Rachel Wagner, and Emma Kehn who all three attended the diocesan wide leadership camp last week! The three of them learned and polished leadership skills, grew in faith with God and with one another and in the end returned home filled with love, joy and renewed energy for their love for God! Congratulations also to Chelsea Bielicki who went as a teen leader. She had been part of the planning process for over a year. She was a camper two years ago who went back as a teen leader. What an awesome job she did as a small group facilitator, prayer leader and as a presenter to the large group! It was an amazing final experience for her with the diocese! Congratulations to all four of you!!
