1 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED ST. GEORGE S PANTRY While we think of our county as being well off and prosperous (we are the second richest county in the state), there are many folks in need all around us. Phone calls from folks looking for help come in all the time and each week we give away hundreds of dollars in assistance. We help to pay rent, electric & gas bills, help people buy their medicines or gas so they can get to work. Most of these folks come to us through LOVE, INC (love in the name of Christ) who verifies the need and works to assure that everyone in need gets helped. We support LOVE, INC with $500 each month and the assistance we give away comes from the Alms box in the Gathering Area and from the money earned by the Script cards & recycling bins. Another program that needs our assistance is St. George s Pantry on Main Street in Brighton, which started several months ago. They are looking for help to stock shelves and serve clients on Saturdays. This needed service helps the working poor in our county, as well as many who might otherwise go hungry. If you are able to help, a sign-up sheet will be out next weekend. Our Charity & Justice Team will also be looking for ways we can help keep food on their shelves so that no one is ever turned away. A COMMUNITY AT PRAYER Lent is a time of prayer, both as individuals and as a community. Besides Sunday Eucharist, we offer several times and ways for folks to come together to pray. We celebrate Eucharist each day of the week here at St. MM: Monday & Tuesday; Thursday & Friday at 9 am. We also have Eucharist at 7 pm on Wednesday evenings. On Mondays we have Evening Prayer and on Fridays we have the Way of the Cross, both begin at 7 pm. At both, we have a reflection on either a Scripture passage or a station offered by either a staff member or another member of our parish. A DAY OF PRAYER ON PRAYER This Sunday we are offering you the opportunity to deepen and develop your understanding and experience of prayer. The day will start at 2 pm with a keynote talk on Prayer: Its Meaning and Purpose. From 2:30 until 4, there will be three separate special programs for children, middle school and high school youth. For adults that same 2:30 until 4 pm time will be divided into three 25 minute segments that will explore different ways of Christian prayer both as individuals and as families. At 4 pm, we will come together for Evening Prayer, which will end by 4:30 pm. In that pagan culture, child sacrifice was common. That s why Abraham believed God wanted him to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. Later generations constantly looked back to this event as Abraham s great faith. Romans 8:31-34 Today s reading is part of a hymn that celebrates God s love and which concludes the eighth chapter of Paul s letter to the Romans. In our first reading, we heard how God spared Abraham s only son; in this passage we will hear how, out of love for us, God did not spare His only son. Mark 9:2-10 On the second Sunday of Lent we always hear the story of the transfiguration. Mark is concerned with the true identity and mission of Jesus. He is also concerned with mistaken notions about Jesus. His resolution comes only at the end of the story but is hinted at in every scene. Reflect: Name a time this past week when you recognized Jesus presence.

2 STEWARDSHIP REPORT Week ending 02/19/12 Approximately 1471 people participated: Envelopes/Cash $16,698 Electronic fund Transfers (EFT) $10,214 Building Fund $1,990 TOTAL $28,902 See Visionary for more details. Thank you for your gifts Next week begins our Diocesan Services Appeal (DSA). You Shall Open Your hand to Them in Their Need, taken from Deuteronomy 15:7-8 and our theme for this year s DSA, reminds us that we are called to be a community that cares. We are called to extend the hand of service as the hand of Jesus Himself to anyone who is in need. Next weekend our parish, and all parishes throughout our diocese, will conduct Commitment Weekend for our Diocesan Services Appeal. This is when we will be asking each member of St. Mary Magdalen to prayerfully consider a generous gift to DSA. Our parish goal can only be reached with the sacrificial support of each one of us. Please prayerfully consider how you or your family will respond to this call to carry on Christ s work in our community. Please pray for all the sick who have been commended to our prayer that they will respond to God s healing will, especially: Joe Szabla, Helen Godwin, Noelle, Jack & Karoline DeRosia, Cyril Riedy, Dwayne Henson, Sue Dooling, Larry Hartleip, Patricia Baran, Mary Orslawski, Michele Koprowicz, Zac Cain, Cate Ross, Tammy, Diane Detter, Andy Boss, John, Gail Rutkowski, Doreen Scott, Phil LeBeault, Ofelia Cruz, Vicki Payne, Barb, Kari Suppnick, Tiffany Celoni, Herb Langer, Tom King, Rachel Bastien, Stephan Dzialowski, Meg Harris, Steve, Lori Sixbery, Robert Treiber, Baby Sullivan-Golbiw, Denetia Smith, Nancy Wisniewski, Israel Retana, Loretta Spitzley, Andrew Sherman, Sylvester Smith, Jerome Wszola, Pat Rogan, Jim Brozovich, Bruce Mairo, Nellie Saxton, Jim Burton, Anthony Riccardi, Dan Knott, Heather Burrill, Ed Gatt, Chuck Galdes, Pat Hackett, Dominic Tyner, Sr., Dominic Tyner, Jr., Larry Johnson, Michelle Geiser, Sean Hartman, Don Cowan, Tracy, Lorraine Sheppard, Dave Kallis, Tom Zremski, Todd Minock, Dick Demmings, David Livingston, Michael Emerick, Clara Cordonnier, Delores Duneske, Bob Clark, Cynthia Macintosh, Paul Stavros, Kim Fay, Steven Boulanger, Bruce LeLong, Bill Gamble, John Gillett, Ken Colombo, Tom McSweeney, Bob Sixbery, Sharon Zain, Jim McMullen, Carole Morey, Jim Fahner, Mari Gevat, Terie Gentry, Lin Golbiw, Sylvia Nicholsa, Tom McSweeney Jr., MaryAnna. 3 Religious Formation News from Mary at and Karen at TODAY~Day of Prayer: Fr. Dave will be our keynote speaker and there will be several sessions on different forms of prayer for all ages! There will be a session for elementary, middle school, high school and adults along with sitters in the nursery. Join us from 2-4:30 (Confirmation youth and Parents this takes the place of the scheduled parent meeting in March.) Fr. Dave will continue to explore the Sacrament of Penance, talking about healing and forgiveness. Come Thursday, March 1, at 7pm. He will talk about the importance of Penance and forgiveness in our lives. Solemn Penance reminder, retreat is next Saturday, March 3, with registration at 8:30. Temple Trip on March 11: traditionally for our families with youth in 6 th grade is now being opened to our whole parish family! This trip takes us to a Jewish Temple in Ann Arbor where we will see, learn, and hear about their traditions and then come back here for a quick pizza dinner. We then go into church with Fr. Dave to have a comparison between our Jewish Heritage compared to our Catholic faith and Traditions! Sign up in the gathering area. WE NEED YOU! If you ever felt called to inquire into the ministry of catechist or assistant, we are ready to sit down and talk with you! Please take time to pray about helping in formation! JWJ is July 30-Aug 3! We are getting ready to start up the planning for our Vacation Bible School. Here at St MM we call it Journey with Jesus or JWJ for short. If you are interested in being a part of the planning committee (it takes a lot of helping hands!) or want to get on our helper list, please sign up in the gathering area on the formation table. Meetings will start soon. Today at the Blue Mass for our emergency responders it has even more meaning for our family. My dad was a Fire Chief; my sister is a volunteer EMT in Wisconsin, and now our son Jimmy is in the police academy in Virginia. Join us in praying for him and all those who put themselves in harm s way for us. Visit our website for class information! Have a great week. MINISTERS OF PRAYER Sunday, Feb. 26 Nancy Nychypor Monday, Feb. 27 Karen Luck Tuesday, Feb. 28 Joanne and Larry Plant Wednesday, Feb. 29 Ginny & Clarence Kroll and Jan Altermatt Thursday, March 1 Sister Joyce, Joe Martinez Friday, March 2 Lynn Pfaff, Audrey Schilkey Saturday, March 3 Volunteer Youth News from Margaret at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org and Stasia at tkcsmom@comcast.net The season of Lent is upon us. Instead of trying to do one thing all 40 days or giving up something for all 40 days or even trying to break a bad habit these 40 days, create a calendar and on each day write something to do for that day. You could challenge yourself to write a letter one day, clean your closet and donate clothes the next. You could give up candy and sweets for one day and the next talk with a friend you need to forgive. Create a calendar for each member in your family and together you can support and challenge each other. The Dave Ramsey financial program designed for teens had us starting to think about impulse buying. We just touched on how to create a budget and what it looks like to save money for a big ticket purchase. Next week will pick up where we left off. The next two meetings will start with dinner at 6:30 beforehand if you can make it to join us, you are welcome to come. Programming begins at 7:30 pm. I am planning a weekend retreat with six other area Catholic churches for the weekend of March at FaHoLo in Grass Lake. We are focusing the weekend on Light and Dark in relation to God in our lives, even during the hard times. There will be a mix of games, small group discussions, reflection, games, open pool and gym time on Saturday and Sunday morning we celebrate Mass with Fr. Nate from St. Agnes. Contact me in the parish offices at or at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org. Money for the weekend is due this weekend at youth group. The cost is $85. There is no youth group this weekend, as it is my hope that many of you will be participate in the afternoon of prayer later this afternoon beginning at 2pm. Practices for the Passion Play are starting also this weekend. If you are interested in being a part of this Lenten experience, please be at the church this afternoon from 4:45-6:16pm. Pizza will be provided for everyone should you be coming from the prayer activities. Contact me via if you cannot make it today. EDGE: I need your middle school registration forms. We will spend the day with over 500 other middle school students from around the diocese in a day full of high energy games, a key note speaker presentation, dinner, Mass with the Bishop and a dance to end the day, combined with large inflatable games and obstacle courses. Please get those to me as soon as you can. We meet again on the 26 th back in the youth room.

MINISTRIES RETREAT DAY Saturday March 17, am - 3pm MAGDALEN AS A GOSPEL OF JOHN PEOPLE The Gospel of John is so very different from the Synoptic Gospels. The sessions will revolve around the core messages of John. The retreat day will explore significant passages, especially the passages regarding just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 13:34 We will ask the question, What does this mean to us personally and to the collective people of God called St. Mary Magdalen? This day is not a parish planning time but a personal discernment day. It is intended especially for all ministers, but everyone is invited. We begin with Morning Prayer at 9:00 in the Day Chapel and will end by 3:00. Livingston YAM The College Years Beyond Great events are happening to gather Young Adults (18-35) in our area! 5 Magdalen s Kitchen Sign-Up We are accepting names of volunteers who are interested in serving at Magdalen s Kitchen for the Mondays of March 5 th, 12 th, 19 th, 26 th, and April 2 nd and 9th. There are 3 cook positions, 8 set-up/ server/clean-up positions, 3 dish washer positions, 4 dessert positions, and 4 sub positions for each Monday. The sign-up sheets are organized by date and are on the Charity and Justice table in the Gathering Space. Sign-ups are on a first come, first serve basis. Slips of paper for volunteers to complete noting the date and task you have volunteered for as a reminder of your commitment are available with the sign-up sheets. One telephone call will be made as a follow-up reminder just prior to the date you are to serve. To volunteer at Magdalen s Kitchen you must be middle school age (and accompanied by an adult) or older to fill a server/dish washer position and 18 years of age or older to fill a cook position. Future dates, for the next period (the rest of April and May), will be posted the end of March. Temple Beth Emeth Tour Sunday, March 11, at 3:00 What better way to pull from what we already know about our Jewish roots than to attend a Temple Tour! We will look at worship books (they read from the back to the front) and the flow of a typical Jewish service. Did you know that they have an eternal light as well? We then see the opening of the Ark, and the handwritten Torah scroll is displayed for us to see up close. It has a beautiful cover and we see the writings. We will have an opportunity to ask questions. Because this trip is so beneficial, we are opening it up to everyone in the parish to join us, but we need you to sign up NOW to give us a number for the Temple. We will be leaving from the parking lot at 3:00 pm in a caravan and return at approximately 5:15 pm. The other part of this temple tour is a discussion led by Fr. Dave comparing the temple to our church and the traditions we have today. Again this year, we will offer a quick pizza dinner at no cost to you before we meet with Fr. Dave. Sign up is in the Gathering Area on the table nearest the hall to the offices. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Karen or Mary in the Office. ICHTHUS Lorraine Crawford is parishioner from St Joseph's parish and she will be sharing her faith story on Sunday March 4.
