1 The Visionary ST. MARY MAGDALEN MARCH 2013 Volume XX Issue 3 The Days Of Our Salvation This month we celebrate a time like no other in the Church year: Holy Week. Unlike all other days of the year, these not only celebrate, but invite us to enter into the experience of the saving event of Jesus' Passover through death to life. The whole year leads up to and away from the last three days of Holy Week, called the Triduum. These three days stand as the pinnacle of our life and our hope! On PASSION (PALM) SUNDAY we go back in time and enter Jerusalem, a city filled with expectation. We welcome Christ with shouts of "hosannah"! Then, tragically; we stand with the same crowd and cry "crucify"! The Liturgies from Monday through Wednesday recall the quiet events leading up to the Triduum. On Wednesday evening, our parish will join together for a Jewish Seder meal, the same ritual meal which was the Last Supper of the Lord. Our sharing in this meal will help us to better understand Jesus, the new Lamb of the new Passover. Holy Week culminates with the Triduum (which means three days ). It is really a single Liturgy stretched over three days and three Liturgies. The pauses between these Liturgies enable us to go home and ponder what we have witnessed. On HOLY THURSDAY, we gather as the Lord's disciples around the table of His passover. Through the symbolic washing of feet or hands, we understand the love that led the Lord to endure such a humiliating death. Then we go with Him to the garden to watch and pray until midnight, the time of His arrest. On GOOD FRIDAY, through the Gospel of the Lord's Passion, we walk with Jesus in His final hours and stand at the foot of the cross to mourn the death brought about by sin. In the second part of the service, the assembly is invited to come before the cross to venerate and ponder its meaning. Finally, to show that the Lord of all compassion is with us in our suffering, we conclude with a simple Communion service. On HOLY SATURDAY, we celebrate the greatest of all Liturgies, the Great Mass of the Resurrection. In our darkened worship area which was stripped the day before as it became the tomb, now we light a new fire to symbolize Christ's victory over sin and darkness. Then through a series of readings we recount how God saved us through the promise and gift of His Son. After this extended Liturgy of the Word, we receive adults and youths into the Church and finally we share with them our most sacred gift, the Bread of Eternal Life. Preparing For Easter We began Lent by proclaiming our determination to turn away from sin and live the Gospel. The prayer, penitential practices and works of charity helped us grow in the Gospel life. 2 from the PASTORAL COUNCIL Our Pastoral Council met on Wednesday, February 21. We continued to discuss our effort to create: Vision 20/20. Based on our original Vision Statement this is a comprehensive, detailed plan for how we envision the parish would function by the year Six goals form the basis of the plan. They are: Continue to develop a parish community that is inclusive, welcoming, and engaged Deepen our engagement in the greater community through ministry and service Continually improve all our efforts based on parishioner and community feedback Increase opportunities for spiritual growth of our parishioners Better communicate our initiatives to the public through media outreach More Effective use of technological tools to achieve our goals The council also received the preliminary plans for how we will celebrate our 20th anniversary this year. David F. Howell, Pastor The first half of the meeting was spent discussing the goals of Vision 20\20 and we added a few ideas to the evolving plan. The majority of our meeting was spent discussing plans for the Sweet Spring Ministry Fair which encourages parishioners to offer their time and talent to the various planning groups that provide leadership to our parish. The fair will run through April. 3 RELIGIOUS FORMATION from Mary Mahar Our 4th grade Penance Candidates are in their final preparations for their Solemn celebration of God's forgiveness. Stasia Eisenhut and the 4th grade catechists are working hard on getting ready for the Penance Retreat on March 2, 8:30-noon. At the retreat, the youth and their parents will participate in activities, pray, and experience what actually happens in a mock confession and talk about sin. All of these activities enhance the celebration of this important Sacrament as they come to Solemn Penance on March 7 and 9. TEMPLE TRIP Sunday March 10, 3 pm: every year as a part of class, the 6th grade youth and their parents take a trip to Ann Arbor to visit Temple Beth Emeth. The Hebrew Scriptures are a regular part of our 6th grade curriculum. In class they learn about the Ark of the Covenant, the Torah, Jesus reading from the Scrolls in the Temple, Solomon building the first Temple, Passover and much more. What better way to pull what they have learned together. We look at worship books (they read from the back to the front), and the flow of a typical Jewish service. Did you know that they have an eternal light as well? We then see the opening of the Ark and the handwritten Torah scroll is displayed for us to see. It has a beautiful cover, and we see the writings up close. When reading it they use a yad, a pointer, used by the reader to keep their place. It is made to look like a finger, the finger of God. We then come back to St. Mary Magdalen, grab a quick bite of pizza and join Fr. Dave in Church for a comparison tour of our Worship and space! We are opening this trip up to all to join us but we need you to sign up NOW to give us a number for the Temple. Please sign up in the gathering area at the Formation Table. Our First Eucharist parents and youth are also in their final preparations for the Sacrament and will have their retreat on Saturday, April 20. COUNCIL CANDIDATES The terms of four Pastoral Council members will soon be coming to an end, making these positions now available to all registered and Confirmed members of St. Mary Magdalen. Members of the Pastoral Council are expected to demonstrate leadership and enthusiasm and solicit the opinions of other parishioners. Each member also serves on a ministry team, acting as liaison between the Pastoral Council and the team. They facilitate communication and understanding, so that together they work toward the fulfillment of our vision for the parish. 4 OF FAITH AND SERVICE from Sr. Joyce Hoile, OSF SENIORS RETREAT -- MARCH 11 This year the Regional Lenten Retreat for Seniors will be hosted at our parish on Monday, March 11 from 9:30 am 2:30 pm. Father Jim Lothamer will be the Presenter of The New Evangelization: What s It About and Why Now? Mass & Lunch is included. Tickets are $7 and must be purchased through Sr. Joyce. BREAD & SOUP On the Fridays in Lent we have a Soup & Bread Meal at 6 pm before the Stations of the Cross at 7 pm. See the sign up sheets in the gathering area. FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT: Dreamer is a movie based on a true story about a mare who hurts her leg racing and is adopted by a dad and his daughter and how they bond with each other. It will be Saturday, March 9, at 7 pm in the Community Room. Popcorn and drinks will be offered for a free will donation. SCHOOL FOR DISCIPLESHIP Six Monday evenings beginning April 8, Deacon Dave Scharf will present the History of the Church. The more one knows what was happening in the history of the world, one can better understand the Church s response. Six Tuesday evenings beginning April 9, Mr. Dan Moulton will present Yearning for God: A Walk with Great Figures in Christian Spirituality. Meet and discuss the Writings of famous Christians of dishwasher, mother, soldier, Bishops and Theologians and the many ways God s presence is experienced in the lives of the faithful. Brochures are at the Adult Formation table in the gathering area. ANNUAL EASTER EGG SCRAMBLE Come Saturday, March 30 at noon to the lawns near the Barn! Peter Rabbit again will join the children from St. Mary Magdalen and St. Patrick parishes who will quickly scramble to fill their baskets with eggs. At interval times, each age level will start their hunt at various yards. Thousands of eggs are filled and laid for this event. Please see the Community Life table in the gathering area for candy donations and help that is needed that day. ADULT CONFIRMATION St. Joseph Catholic Church in Howell is hosting the Regional Adult Confirmation classes, Thursdays at 7 pm, beginning April 11, for 6 weeks. Confirmation will be conferred in one s own Parish on Pentecost Sunday. Please call Sr. Joyce to register if you wish to receive this Sacrament. A Confirmed Catholic is a full member of the Catholic Church, eligible to be a Godparent for Baptism, a Sponsor for Confirmation and receive the Sacraments of Marriage or Holy Orders March Intentions for the Year of Faith: For our Elect, Candidates and Inquirers A PRAYER FOR THIS SPECIAL YEAR Good and gracious God, we pray that every person in our diocese will come to know and love our Lord Jesus Christ in a personal way. May we mature as true disciples of Christ Jesus and may each of us become actively engaged in the life and mission of the Church, joyfully using his or her gifts for the building up of your kingdom. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. As you renew the face of the earth, re-create in the divine image all who are your own. Instruct the hearts of all the faithful by your heavenly light and make us truly wise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. SEDER MEAL: RECLAIMING OUR JEWISH HERITAGE Celebrating our Jewish roots is an important way to help us better understand Christ s passion and death. Each year, we as a parish family, celebrate a Seder meal during Holy Week This Seder is a combination of specific Jewish prayers, ritual, foods and reflection on Israel s liberation from the enslavement called the Passover. Our annual Seder meal is Wednesday, March 27, 6:30 pm in the Community Room. Register early because seating is limited and registration is required. Sign up sheets are in the Gathering Area. A potluck dinner is part of our celebration. Please bring a dish to pass that feeds about 12 people. Help is needed the day before (Tuesday, March 26) and the day of (Wednesday) to help prepare the items for each place setting. Sign up is in the gathering area or call Sister Joyce to attend. 4

5 TOWARD THE TRIDUUM from Diane Kubus Peacefulness and joy may not be the first characteristics that come to mind when describing these last few weeks of Lent, but the reality is, that in our service to the poor, in the real self-giving that comes from helping someone in need, we come to know the joy of encountering Christ. In the attentive listening of prayer, we come to know the peacefulness of growing in every moment closer to God. This is the time that we pray for others, for the world, when we commit to changing our lives, when we ask for the strength to carry on, when we plunge ourselves into the font of grace. This giving over nature of Lent is setting aside the distractions in order that the mysteries of liturgy and life might draw us more deeply into relationship with Christ and with one another. We must, however, be both open and willing to trust. Our belief in the power of the resurrection is what carries us forward one grace-filled step at a time. Our candidates and catechumens celebrated the Rite of Election on Saturday, Feb. 16 with 30 other parishes in our diocese. With Bishop Boyea presiding, this major threshold rite makes an important statement. First, it reminds them that they are joining the Catholic Church Universal, not simply our local parish and that it is the Church that approves and validates their readiness for initiation. They are now called the Elect not because we have voted for them, but because we see in them God s election - God s choice. They have been chosen by God for the Easter Sacraments. Their names are enrolled in the Book of the Elect which has been placed in our worship space until Holy Week. These men, women and children are now moving through and experiencing a time of intense preparation, this time of enlightenment, with a deeper awareness of the power of God s grace, through prayer and reflection. As we continue on our Lenten journey toward the Great Vigil, let us pray for all those preparing for the Easter Sacraments. If you have never celebrated the Easter Vigil, you have missed out on a night like no other. If fact, come to the great Triduum, The Three Days, Holy Thursday 7:30 pm, Good Friday, 7:30 pm and Holy Saturday, 8:30 pm. One great Liturgy spread over three days. You will want to come back every year. I guarantee it. THE TRIDUUM: YOU SIMPLY MUST BE THERE. THE CHURCH NEEDS YOU! EXCITING TIMES ARE THESE by Darlene Domanik Pastoral Council members recently asked their constituents for their reaction and concerns regarding the selection of a new pope. The response was immediate and passionate. While our members expressed contentment with the St. Mary Magdalen community (indeed, our numbers here continue to grow), these responses reveal the hopes and frustrations of our faithful regarding the global Catholic Church and its future. Here are some common themes in the responses: *Praise for Pope Benedict's courage in stepping down. *A desire to move forward and not retreat to a "safer" past. *A pope with great energy, leadership and communication skills who will inspire us and the world. *One who has openness, acceptance, and respect for all people, in cluding women; a "red letter" pope who will emphasize the teachings of Christ over rules and regulations. *A pope who will eschew politics in favor of values and spiritual guidance. *A man who has lived in the "real world," and truly understands the real struggles of real people. *One who values the people over the hierarchy and administration: after all, this is OUR church-- WE are the church. While they noted that we have no say in the conclave, the respondents believed that the selection will be inspired by the Holy Spirit, and will continue to pray for a brighter future for the worldwide Catholic Church. 5

6 TEEN NEWS from Margaret Callaghan EDGE NEWS March will prove to be a busy month for the youth of St. Mary Magdalen. For starters, be sure to have your calendar marked for our annual regional retreat March We are gathering with a couple other Catholic youth groups to celebrate our faith, friendship and of course to have food at FaHoLo Retreat Center in Grass Lake. I strongly encourage you to participate. This is a great opportunity during Lent to give some time to God to grow in relationship with your peers and God. Contact me in the parish office (810) or youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org to register or for more information. If you were not able to make the information meeting for our summer trip this summer back in February, our next meeting is Thursday March 14. At this meeting if you have not yet paid your $75 nonrefundable deposit, it will be due at this meeting. If you would like the information I went over in February, please me and I will you the power point. Dearborn Meats are currently being sold by many of our high school teens as a fundraiser to help with the cost of the service trip. They will be in the gathering area after all three Liturgies the weekends of March Plan to purchase your Easter ham and other goodies then. For those teens taking part in the Passion Reenactment, practices are every Sunday afternoon from 3-5 pm in the worship space. Dinner will be provided for those moving right into Confirmation prep classes. For those not attending class, bring your homework to do in the youth room as you wait for Youth Group to start at 7 pm. March also proves to be a busy month for us spiritually as we close the season of Lent and celebrate Easter! Make the month count and take advantage of this season and really challenge yourself to take the time out needed to pray, reflect and grow in your relationship with God so that when you celebrate Easter you rejoice together with God in all that has been accomplished. God is good and if you keep your eyes open and your heart on fire with His love and forgiveness, you too will rise on Easter Sunday a new person! (6-8 graders) What a year of meetings so far! Since the New Year, we have only met twice having to cancel two of our scheduled meetings due to weather. It has been such a strange winter season with school closings. We are looking forward to our meetings in March as we celebrate Lent and Easter, then move right into spring break. There is a lot to be thankful for and look forward to. Our meeting in March is scheduled for March 11. MAGDALEN S LITTLE PEOPLE from Kathie Anderer Old man winter seems to be hanging on forever! I am so ready for the spring weather to return. Our VIP Night is over for another year. What a fun night we had! We all wore our PJ s to school and enjoyed the evening. The children love the whole idea of bringing someone special to Night School. Making memories is sure fun! March is reading month. We have a field trip planned to go to Barnes and Noble. We are running a Book Fair for the first part of March to go along with our field trip. Look for more information. You have to mention Magdalen s Preschool when you make a purchase so that we get credit. This will be our first field trip to a bookstore! There is going to be an author there to sign books for us. It sounds like a great trip and I am sure that we will all really enjoy the new adventure. Preschool sign up for the school year is in progress. If you or someone you know is looking for a preschool for next year, please invite them in for a visit and to pick up an application. Our class lists will be compiled soon so hurry and get your application turned in. We would love to have you join us! Also, if you have a child in the 3-year old class, please notify us by April 1 if you intend to keep them in the program next year. Our class lists will be compiled after that date. 7 SERVANT TO MANY from Gary Prise As a deacon I am called to model Jesus in his role as servant. It is my full time job, and it is not really new. As a police officer I saw my primary role as being a public servant which is much broader than being a law enforcer. Then as a school bus driver I saw my role as providing service; it was more than transporting children to and from school. I had many opportunities to be a foster parent to students who would discuss almost anything under the sun with me. I am obsessed with this whole service thing. Well this is the season of giving up and giving ourselves away. There is an activity coming up that requires lots of hands to be a success. Last month I wrote about the Capuchin Mission in Detroit. On Saturday, April 27, is the Labor of Love Project Day, People Helping People, right here in our own backyard: Livingston County. It is an opportunity to help the disabled and seniors who are unable to do many home related fix-up/clean-up chores. Be on the look-out for more information. It is another golden opportunity to have your heart touched and make God s kingdom a tangible reality. Are you up for the challenge? THE KNIGHTS CORNER from Don Powell, Grand Knight Your Knights of Columbus Council made another donation of $5,000 to the Livingston County Ultrasound Initiative. The initiative is the collaboration of all Knights of Columbus Councils in Livingston County. Our first donation last year helped to purchase a new ultrasound machine for Pregnancy Helpline in Brighton, which has over 20 documented lives saved and that does not include the ones where the mother never came back and let them know of her decision. We have also assisted another council in Lapeer to help them purchase a machine for another anti-abortion clinic. We will continue to help other clinics throughout the state to purchase machines and to help them with their yearly maintenance. Thanks to your generosity in our fundraising efforts you and the Knights of Columbus are making a difference. CHARITY AND JUSTICE by Sue Weir EASTER TREE OF LIFE Our Senior Easter Tree of Life is in the Gathering Area. Tags on the tree represent the needs of senior citizens from Brighton, Highland, Howell, and Hartland Senior Centers, Livingston County Catholic Services (LCCS), Medilodge, and Howell Care Center. These basic needs include soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, paper towels, stationery, stamps, and gift cards for area grocery stores and pharmacies. You are invited to take a tag from the tree and return the unwrapped item or gift cards by March 15. Please consider buying your gift cards from the SCRIP table in the community room after the weekend Liturgies so that a percentage will go to Magdalen s Kitchen. In the evening we will celebrate the most important Liturgy of the year and the completion of the Lord's Passover through death to life! It is a Celebration of the Resurrection, rich in ancient symbolism. During the Liturgy new members are initiated into the Church through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. We who have made the journey of Lent renew our Baptismal commitment as we strive to live the new life Christ has given us through His death and resurrection. EASTER EGG HUNT All children are welcome to attend from 12 noon to 2 pm. We will gather promptly at 12 noon back by the barn.
