1 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 1 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED A DIOCESAN FUND DRIVE! This fall we will partner with all 81 parishes of the Diocese of Lansing in an 18-month campaign to raise $65 million for a variety of good works. Some of the funds raised will create endowments for Catholic Charities, Catholic education, the formation of seminarians, candidates for the diaconate and pastoral ministry. Some of the funds will shore up the priests pension fund. Five million dollars will fund DSA for 2017 (there will be no DSA next spring). Some of the money will go to other programs including evangelization and outreach. Finally, there are funds that will go to the capital needs of our five Catholic Charities Agencies across the diocese. HOW WE WILL BENEFIT? Because this fund drive is a joint effort beginning with the first dollar pledged, we will receive a percentage and as we reach our goals, our percentage will increase. Most of the funds we raise will pay down our debt (which stands at just over $3 million). We also have a couple of small projects that will be of service to our community. One is to install a brick plaza and landscaping around the bell tower. The second is to fix and improve the Video System in church. WILL YOU BE A PART OF IT? Besides asking folks to make a gift or a pledge, I would ask all of you to please consider being a part of the campaign! To be clear, I am not asking you to solicit funds in any way! What I am asking is that you serve on the campaign team in one of three ways: 1. As Prayer Partners, who will encourage and increase our parishioners prayer for the success of our phase of the campaign. 2. As Participation Advocates who will encourage people to participate in one of the meetings that will explain the campaign. 3. As Gathering Hosts who will serve as hospitality folks to the participants who will attend any of the small group meetings. The ALL IN meeting to explain the campaign and how you can help will be on Thursday, October 6, at 7 pm in the Community Room. If you are willing to serve, I ask you to sign up in the Gathering Area (at the Welcome Desk) or call Sandi Phillips, the campaign secretary, and let her know you can come (after hours leave a message at ext. 172). Or you can send an to sect4@saintmarymagdalen.org BLESSING OF PETS Next Sunday, we will have the blessing of pets under the canopy at 2 pm. Hope you and your pet can join us for this brief prayer! A contemporary of Jeremiah, he preached at a time when Babylon threatened to destroy Jerusalem. Today s passage is a dialogue between the prophet and the Lord. 2 Timothy 1: 6-8, Although the author attributes second Timothy to St. Paul, it was probably written by someone else as much as 30 years after Paul s death. This was an acceptable practice at the time. One important theme of this letter is the need to be faithful to the Gospel and not to be swayed by false teachings. Luke 17: 5-10 The disciples ask for an increase of faith and Jesus responds by saying, in effect, Don t worry about how much faith you have. It is a powerful thing that even a tiny bit of it makes you miracle workers. You have faith, now nurture it and make it grow. Reflect: How am I growing in my faith? How can I nurture it more?

MARY MAGDALEN Page 3 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN Religious Formation News Roxanne at dre1@saintmarymagdalen.org Karen at sect2@saintmarymagdalen.org Religious Education Family Program Please attend the 9 am Liturgy, enjoy a coffee and donut and join the sixty plus families participating this year in the gym at 10:20 am next Sunday, October 2. First Eucharist Parent Meetings All parents of children receiving the sacrament of First Eucharist spring of 2017 are required to attend one of the three offered parent meetings: Wednesday, October 5 4:30, 6:30 and Thursday, October 6 at 5:30. Please mark your calendar. All meetings will be in the North Room. It is not too late to register Parents please do not skip years. It becomes difficult for your children to receive the sacraments with their peers. Our family program meets 2x a month, and most grades can be done as home study. Please contact myself or Karen for more information. Catholic School Youth: If you have a youth in a Catholic school needing to prepare for First Eucharist 2 nd grade, Solemn Penance 4 th grade or to begin preparation for the sacrament of confirmation 9 th grade, you need to register your child for preparation here at St. Mary Magdalen. Please do so right away. Youth News Margaret at yminister1@gmail.com Jillian at jilliankillian25@gmail.com Starting next week we will be begin discussing and planning our annual conversion of the church barn from a place of storage to a place where hauntingly good fun takes place! So, be sure to mark your calendars now for Saturday, October 29 as that is also the parish wide Trunk and Treat!! Also, mark your calendars for Sunday, November 6. We will be in Lansing for the 31 st Annual Youth Jamboree. We ll gather with over 800 teens and adults from the all over the diocese for great live music, awesome workshops, liturgy and a fun fest to end the day. The cost for the day is $60 due mid-october with the opportunity to order an event tee shirt. See Margaret Callaghan for all the registration details. Last weekend we met new freshman and newbies to YG. We played a couple games and had good discussion about looking to see God and the good in others. We challenged the group to participate in reconciliation and how being right with God and others they re in conflict with can really be a wonderful thing. Although we must look at our mistakes and reconcile our shortcomings, God is good and sees us as work in progress and grants us peace, grace and strength despite ourselves Formation Calendars in the gathering area or at Each grade level syllabus has been posted to the website as well. A Parent Promise When we brought our babies to the Church for baptism we promised to raise them Catholic. This not only means teaching the faith but bringing them to Mass every Sunday and Holy days of obligation. Many children in our religious formation program last year did not attend the Catholic Church weekly, some missed many Sundays not just a few. I ask all parents to please make a covenant with yourself and your family to attend every Sunday. Try very hard not to miss. Not only is it sinful to skip Sunday Liturgy intentionally, but it is hurtful to your brothers and sisters in faith. We need one another! When one family skips attending Sunday Liturgy they are not only cheating themselves but they are cheating their Christian brothers and sisters. How is this? Well when you or I are not there we are not giving our parish family the opportunity to worship with us, so they are being cheated the opportunity to praise the Lord in community with us. EDGE Note that we have adjusted the Monday September 26 th Open House. We will be in the youth room from 7-8 pm. At 7:15 we ll have a short parent meeting. Students will be with our high school leaders in the gym. This is an opportunity for the adult leaders to explain our EDGE Mission. You can sign up for snacks, pay for the Spicer Orchards EDGE night out, place an order for EDGE spirit wear and to meet the leaders who plan the EDGE meetings. We look forward to meeting you and getting started with a new year.

4 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 4 Of Faith and Service Sr. Joyce at pastmin1@saintmarymagdalen.org Clergy Appreciation Day is October 9 School for Discipleship Brochures are available at the Adult Formation Table and online. Monday evenings is Church and the Theology of God, by Sr. Joyce and Thursday evenings is The Writings of St Paul, by Dcn. Dave Scharf. Child care is available if requested. Called By Name Diocesan Conference October 21 & 22, Summit Sports Center, 9140 Davis Highway, Dimondale When you think of evangelizing do you imagine going door-to-door, handing out leaflets to strangers and talking about the Catholic faith? That is not the evangelizing most of us are called to do. But it is likely you have many chances to share with a loved one your personal experiences of God s love in your life. If you re presented with an opening in a conversation, the way you listen and the things you say may help a family member or friend to rediscover their faith. That s the kind of evangelizing we all can do, especially with loved ones who have left the Church. The Diocese of Lansing is hosting a conference to help parishioners inspire others with the joy of their faith, and learn to invite others back to the Church. The conference is titled Called By Name because we are all called by name to have a personal relationship with Jesus, and because God is calling each of us in a special way to help him reach out to others. Friday is a work day for many. Take a vacation day from work? We take vacation days for other good things. What is the price of a soul? Are you willing to pay at least some price to add to the eternal impact of bringing someone back into communion with God and His Church? Visit: calledbyname2016.org for more information and to register.
