1 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED THE THIRD EPIPHANY Two weeks ago we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany and heard Matthew s Gospel of the coming of the Magi. Last Sunday we heard Luke s account of Jesus baptism by John in the Jordan which was the second epiphany or revelation of Christ. This Sunday we hear John tell us of the third time Jesus is revealed as the Messiah, at the Wedding Feast of Cana. As John tells us, it was with the miracle of the water turned to wine that Jesus revealed his glory to his disciples and they believed in him! THREE ANNIVERSARIES The Lectionary, the book of Sunday Scripture Readings, has a three year cycle. This Sunday s Gospel of the Wedding Feast at Cana was the Gospel I proclaimed and preached on 36 years ago when I began my deacon-internship year at St. John in Hartland. So this Sunday marks the start of my 36 th year in ordained ministry and the 18 th time I have journeyed through the cycle of the Sunday readings. ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY This Monday is another significant anniversary for me: 35 years ago Bishop Povish ordained Dave Doepker and myself to the priesthood at St. Mary Cathedral in Lansing. I am grateful to God for all the many people who have been a part of my life over these last 35 years; and I am especially grateful for the opportunity to have spent almost twenty of those years here with you! JANUARY 22, 1973 This is the third anniversary. Those of us with a memory for history will recall that Michigan had a referendum on whether or not abortion should be legalized only months before the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the abortion laws of every state in the nation with it s landmark Roe vs Wade decision of January 22, In the forty years since then, it is estimated that over 50 million infants have been aborted. A few of these infants were a threat to the life of the mother or a result of rape or incest; but most of these infants had their lives ended for much lesser reasons. I would ask all of us to use this Tuesday as a day of fasting and prayer for parents of the unborn that they might make life-giving decisions. And please pray for those who have chosen to have an abortion. The vast majority of them deeply regret that decision. ONE LAST THING I will be taking a winter break starting this week. Fr. Alan Wakefield will be here next weekend, and I will be back in the office on January 31. Fr. Dave Howell THIS WEEK S LITURGIES January 21, - Monday Saint Agnes, Virgin and Martyr Heb 5:1-10/Mk 2: :00 am +Fr. After their initial religious fervor, the people s moral life and commitment to the law had lapsed. So Ezra, the priest, challenged the people to renew their commitment to the law, and conducted what is today a religious revival. 1 Corinthians 12:12-30 Today we continue our reading from the first letter of Paul to the Christians in Corinth, an important seaport. He was answering a letter they wrote to him, containing questions about life in their community. Among the questions was how to deal with the diversity of gifts within the community, and the rivalries and jealousies that inevitably arise. He responds by using an image that the Catholic Church has emphasized. Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21 Here we witness the beginning of Jesus ministry in Galilee. One of Luke s aims is to show that the word of God which Jesus speaks is for all people the world over, not only the chosen people, Israel. With this passage from Luke we embark on the wonderful and awful journey toward the paschal mystery. Today this scripture passage has been fulfilled! Reflect: What ministry is God asking of you today?

3 Religious Formation News from Mary at and Karen at On Facebook at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church Last week Fr. Dave helped our Confirmation Candidates and their Parents examine what it means to Believe in one God and had us all renew our Baptismal promises around the Baptismal Font. Our community room was full as our youth and their parents/ sponsors learned about the different Creeds and more about our faith! Elizabeth Milatz and Devon Wolfe had a power point presentation which challenged them with many questions and discussions on the Apostles Creed. It was great to hear everyone cheer and moan about the answers! Thank you to all who attended. Formation Classes: We still have room in our classes if you haven t registered yet (regardless of your ability to pay). Come into or call the office for more information. If payment is a problem, please call Mary at extension #115. WE NEED YOU! We are looking for individuals with the desire to share their faith with the youth of our parish. If you ever felt called to inquire into the ministry of catechist or assistant, give us a call! We need you to pass along the fundamentals of our faith. Catechists and aides are needed in our formation classes during the week on Wednesday and Thursday, along with Sunday mornings and evenings. We will provide training, information and support before you ever meet with a class. Even if you do not feel the classroom is the best place to use your talents, our Formation Team is in need of new members as well. This team helps set the direction of the programs and what goes into our classes. If you have ever wondered if you possess the gifts needed and enjoy working with youth, please call me in the office! Just a reminder about snow days: Since it is January, it is a good time to remind you of our snow policy. If Brighton area schools are cancelled due to bad weather, our Faith Formation classes will also be cancelled. In case Religious Formation is cancelled during the school day, we will notify each family by . (We are no longer using the automated phone calling system.) If you have a change of or phone numbers let Karen in the office know ASAP. Jewish Temple Trip, March 10, 3:00: This is part of our curriculum for families with youth in 6 th grade. It is also open to our whole parish family! This trip takes us to a Jewish Temple in Ann Arbor where we will see, learn, and hear about their faith, come back here for quick pizza dinner and then go into church with Fr. Dave to have a comparison between our Jewish Heritage compared to our Catholic faith and Traditions. Sign up at the Formation Table. Reminder: we have classes every week this month. Youth News from Margaret at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org and Stasia at tkcsmom@att.net Our annual winter weekend getaway is Feb There is still room for more, if you are interested! There is a $50 balance due by months end. The total cost for the weekend is $100. Contact me at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org to sign up or if you have any questions. If you are looking ahead to summer, think about spending a week with us on our week-long service trip July 22-27, with the National Relief Network (NRN)! Currently the plan is to travel east and help with recovery work from Hurricane Sandy. There is a meeting Tuesday, February 5th at 7pm here in the youth room. Plan to come with questions. Looking ahead we have a few things coming up worth marking your calendar for now. NRN meeting on Tues. Feb 5 for summer work service trip July Weekend Winter Getaway Feb Money for WWG paid in full by month end Regional Spring Retreat March 8-11 Souper Bowl Sunday collection in Feb Lent will be here soon and really we just finished celebrating Jesus birth; the holiday season of all things good and happy with gift giving and, lots and lots of food, parties and good times. Lent on the other hand is a time of sacrifice, somberness, and deep reflection on our relationship with God. We are asked to forgive and be forgiven; to reach out to those who we have lost touch with. It seems we go from one extreme to the other in a short amount of time. My hope is that you will take the joy of Christmas and jump into Lent with enthusiasm about growing closer to God and deepening your love for him and others. EDGE Eighth grade students are welcome to participate in the Passion Play Reenactment for Good Friday. Practices will start the first Sunday of Lent and continue all throughout the season until, of course, Good Friday. Please contact me via at youth1@saintmarymagdalen.org if you have questions or would like more information. Our next EDGE meeting is Monday, January 28. In Feb we have an EDGE Night Out, so be sure to keep an eye open here for details. Happy New Year!! PLEASE MAKE SURE THE PAR- ISH OFFICE HAS YOUR CUR- RENT PHONE NUMBER AND ADDRESS! THANKS.
