2 ST. MARY MAGDALEN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED PREPARE THE WAY FOR CHRIST During the season of Advent, we hear readings that call us to straighten the crooked, lower the high places and fill in the lowly. It is a transformative time, a time when we turn away from sin and seek to welcome Christ more fully into our lives as our Savior. The Sacrament of Penance offers us the opportunity to hand over our sin, let them go and open ourselves to the mercy of God. It is a celebration allowing God not just to forgive us, but to flood us with His divine mercy. Over this next week of Advent there are several opportunities to prepare ourselves for the coming Christ through the Sacrament of Penance. On Monday there is a communal celebration here: Monday, December 18, 7 pm St. Mary Magdalen There are also several times for individuals to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance: Tues. Dec am - 11 am Wed. Dec pm - 5 pm Thurs. Dec am - 12 noon 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Fri. Dec am - 12 noon Sat. Dec am - 12 noon THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Next weekend we celebrate the shortest week of Advent: It only lasts 24 hours! We will have the regular week-end schedule: SATURDAY EVENING AT 4:30 PM SUNDAY MORNING AT 9 & 11 AM With Christmas beginning on Sunday evening, this means we will be seeing a lot of each other! That is part of the joy of these holy days families get together more often and so will our parish family!! CHRISTMAS LITURGIES There will be four: CHRISTMAS EVE: 4 pm, 6:15 pm & 10 pm CHRISTMAS DAY: 10 am The Christmas Eve 4 pm Liturgy will be the most crowded. When the church is full, the overflow will be seated in the Community Room. The Christmas Eve 6:15 pm Liturgy begins with the children re-telling the Christmas story. The Mid-Night Liturgy of Christmas is at 10 pm and is the primary Liturgy of Christmas and especially beautiful. It follows the pattern of the Christmas Liturgy of the fifth century. Three readings from the Old Testament remind us of how the promise of a Savior guided God's people and prepared us to hear the Good News of Jesus' birth. The morning Mass of the Shepherds (10 am) is much simpler, also very beautiful. I look forward to celebrating both Advent & Christmas with you next weekend! Fr. Dave Howell BRIGHTON, MI THIS WEEK S LITURGIES December 18, Monday Jer 23:5-8/Mt 1: :00 am +Joseph & Louise Churches 7:00 pm Regional Penance December 19, Tuesday Jgs 13:2-7, 24-25a/Lk 1:5-25 9:00 am +Keith Dunn December 20, Wednesday Is 7:10-14/Lk 1: :00 pm +Mass of Remembering December 21, Thursday Sg 2:8-14/Lk 1: :00 am +Brother Otto December 22, Friday 1 Sm 1:24-28/Lk 1: :00 am +Sharlene Grzywacz December 23, Saturday Mal 3:1-4, 23-24/Lk 1:57-66 December 24, Sunday, Fourth Sunday of Advent 2 Sm 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16/Rom 16:25-27/Lk 1: :30 pm Vigil +Jean Galazyn 9:00 am +Fred Preiss 11:00 am +Mimi Keresztes-Fischer December 25, Monday, THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD Is 62:1-5/Acts 13:16-17, 22-25/Mt 1:1-25 4:00 pm Vigil St. Mary Magdalen Parishioners 6:15 pm St. Mary Magdalen Parishioners Is 9:1-6/Ti 2:11-14/Lk 2: :00 pm St. Mary Magdalen Parishioners Is 62:11-12/Ti 3:4-7/Lk 2: :00 am St. Mary Magdalen Parishioners FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 This passage refers to the Ark of God which was a wooden chest overlaid by gold where the stone tablets of the 10 Commandments were kept. King David, rich and comfortable in his palace, felt the Ark deserved to be housed in similar splendor. God will tell David that a physical building is not as important as the house (that is, the dynasty) of David. Christians have seen this prophecy fulfilled in Christ, who was born of the House of David. Romans 16:25-27 Today s passage concludes Paul s long letter to the Romans. It is one sentence, and it is very much like a toast offered to God. In effect, Paul is saying that it all comes down to this: We should give thanks to God that salvation is available to all people through faith in Jesus Christ. Luke 1:26-38 This is one of the most familiar passages of the New Testament. It is the narrative of the conception of Jesus in the womb of Mary. The theology of this narrative is what most believers think of during Advent. The narrative has two parts: the setting of the scene and the conversation between Gabriel and Mary. Hear the messages of consolation and hope. Reflect: Name one area of your life that you think is impossible. During this week ask God to assist you with that area of your life. 2

4 ST. MARY MAGDALEN RELIGIOUS FORMATION NEWS Roxanne Hundsrucker Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent Have you taken time to be watchful? Today is Gaudete Rejoice Sunday, often referred to as Rose Sunday, when we light the pink candle with great joy; the joy in our heart over all that the birth of Christ is to us as Christians. One more plug for the movie The Star. I highly recommend it to all generations. Playing at the MJR, Brighton and Emagine in Novi this weekend. It is an animated movie with a beautiful story of the Nativity. Great characters, voice-overs, and a very good selection of traditional and contemporary Christmas music. Do you know the O Antiphons? The O Antiphons are an evening prayer used the last seven days of Advent. They come from the names given to the coming Messiah. Traditionally they are sung or recited at Vespers from December in the Catholic Church and are as follows: December 17 O Wisdom, December 18 O Lord, December 19 O Root of Jesse, December 20 O Key of David, December 21 O Rising Sun, December 22 O King of the nations, December 23 O Emmanuel. I challenge each of you to look them up and pray them these last days of Advent before dinner, near your Christmas Crèche or in front of your Christmas tree. Fourth Sunday of Advent & Christmas Eve Next Sunday, is an unusual day for us Catholics, especially those of us who like to attend the Christmas Eve Liturgy. The fourth Sunday of Advent falls on Christmas Eve this year. Does attending Mass on Sunday evening take care of both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas obligations? The U.S. Catholic Bishops say That we should attend separate Masses for the two days. So for someone like myself who always attends on Christmas Eve, I will be attending in the morning and evening next Sunday. Many times I have been asked, how many times can I receive the Eucharist in one day? The answer is twice if during the Eucharistic Celebration. YOUTH NEWS Margaret Callaghan BRIGHTON, MI As we wind down this last of school, it will be hard to remain focused. Be kind to your teachers because they are just as anxious as you to begin break! Take a deep breath, invite the Holy Spirit into your heart, and sit back to watch the silly movies you ll be forced to sit through. It s only three days people. You can do it! Our annual Winter Weekend Getaway is scheduled for January The $100 for the weekend per participant is due tonight. Please contact me if you need more time or help with the cost. The $100 covers the lodging and five meals. Take a look at the website here, you may just want to rent for yourself! We are celebrating the Christmas holiday with another YG gathering for a gift exchange and for fun at the Riesser home in Milford. Details will be handed out during our regular Sunday evening meetings. The party is this Friday Dec. 22. Come February 11, we will be joining the 9 th grade religious ed. class for a parish-wide Youth Alpha. Think about being a part of this wonderful, spiritual journey with us. The video led program will be an opportunity to grow in relationship with Jesus and with one another through small group table discussion. A little different than YG meetings is that attendance for the program is necessary. Each week builds on the last and the small group depends on consistency. Life happens and if something comes up, you ll be fine to miss one or two. All 9 th graders will participate through religious ed. All other youth should register with Margaret Callaghan at yminister1@gmail.com. Each small group will be led though discussion by a youth host and an adult helper. Be sure to stay up-to-date with the YG Remind text updates. Just text the to WELLNESS QUOTE The body benefits from movement, the mind benefits from stillness. ~ Sakyong Mipham 4

The churches in Livingston County raised a total of $11,014 this year, with the contributions from our parish amounting to $2,570 a new record for St. Mary Magdalen! When we sit down to our family meals this month, surrounded by loved ones, we should count our blessings and feel some satisfaction knowing that we helped to put food on the tables of hungry people here and around the world.
