1 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 1 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED WITNESS TO HOPE The last of our meetings were completed this weekend after the 4:30 pm and 11 am Liturgies. Over the last six weeks or so, I have met with several hundred members of our community and given pledge packets to close to 400 of our 1445 households. Next weekend we will ask the rest of the community to pick up their packet as they leave church and the remainder will be mailed on the following Monday. I cannot stress enough how important this effort is! This fund drive will help the Diocese of Lansing support future efforts to share our faith with the young, to reach out to the needy and prepare men and women for ministry in the Church. While it will help the diocese, it is essential to our parish. It will make sure there are needed funds to make our monthly mortgage payment of $41,500 without having to cut staff or programming to find the money in our operating budget. So it is my sincere hope all of our members will prayerfully consider how they might respond to this joint effort of our parish and the Diocese of Lansing and return their pledge commitment by December 10/11! OUR ICONS Back in 2009, as we were re-imagining our worship space, we decided to create six spaces for prayer and inspiration. The Shrine of Remembering is one of these spaces. Here we post the pictures of those who have recently died, for a year of prayer and commemoration. The two larger shrines have the images of Our Lady of Guadalupe who is the patroness of the American continents. The other large shrine has a statue of the Venerable Casey Solanus, a Capuchin Friar who served as the door keeper at the Capuchin Friary in Detroit. (Among his many kindnesses, he created the Capuchin Soup Kitchen during the depths of the great Depression. It still serves food to hundreds of people every day.) The last three shrines have images of 14 saints. Solanus and the other 14 were chosen by our community through a couple of ballots. From all the Saints that were suggested, we chose the 28 top candidates. A second ballot gave us 15, with the Venerable Casey having the most votes! An iconographer was commissioned to write the 14 icons to be gathered in three shrines. Over the last six years, they have been slowly completed (with words of prodding, pleading and threats from me). Two weeks ago the last icon was finally delivered it was promised by last Pentecost. Now that we have them all, we are preparing a booklet to briefly tell the story of each saint and to include a prayer. The Worship Team will decide when we will have the official blessing of all the icons and how we can encourage our folks to use them as part of their prayer. Fr. After the death of Saul, their first king, the tribes decided upon a successor, as we will hear in this reading. Colossians 1: In our age of space and travel, there is sometimes a speculation about Christ s place in the wider universe, particularly if life was found on other planets. Today s passage quotes an early Christian hymn which describes the kingship of Christ in cosmic terms. Luke 23: Christ is the shepherd-king par excellence, a role found often in Hebrew Scriptures. No scene could make it more clear that Jesus is a special kind of king than in this gospel passage of Luke. Reflect: Who in our community are those who carry Jesus cross at the moment. What can I, or we, do to help them?

3 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 3 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN Religious Formation News Roxanne at dre1@saintmarymagdalen.org Karen at sect2@saintmarymagdalen.org Witness to Hope Campaign Prayer for Children Oh, GOD, hear us pray. Let the Holy Spirit come to help our families help. Let all of us show our love as we gladly share with YOU. As Mary the Blessed Mother helps us hear you, We can share your glory with everyone. Dear God, bless this campaign with our excitement for your Holy Name, Help us to see that our parish is part of the bigger church, Making sure the church grows for OUR children, And share with those who are hurting. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus, Who gives us hope, through YOU and the Holy Spirit. AMEN Our youth will pray the above prayer in class, and each student will receive a prayer card to take home with them. I encourage each family to pray this prayer together and pray for the Witness to Hope campaign to be a great success. Traditional Religious Formation Program We do not have regular classes this Wednesday/Thursday. All families are encouraged to join us on Thursday evening for our annual Thanksgiving Liturgy at 6 pm. Youth/Family Thanksgiving Liturgy Thursday night at 6 pm all Religious Formation families, including the Family and Home Study programs, are encouraged to join us at the Thanksgiving Liturgy. We will be packing about 20 Thanksgiving food boxes following the Liturgy in the Community Room. Youth News Margaret at yminister1@gmail.com Jillian at jilliankillian25@gmail.com I see on social media that many people during the month of November post everyday something they are thankful for. What a great practice! Many times we end the day not realizing the good God has given us. Somedays are better than others but even on the bad, there are things and people we are blessed with. Take the time with your family at the end of the day. Instead of posting it, share your gratitude with each other and spend time in conversation with one another. Looking ahead, mark your calendar for January for our annual Winter Weekend Getaway. The cost is $100 for the weekend and includes lodging and all meals. Skiing and rentals are extra. Visit to see where we have stayed for the past 7 years. Starting in January, I will host a youth Dave Ramsey financial planning class. Along with this class for the youth, Chris Topley will be hosting one for adults. Both classes will run 9 weeks on the same day. The hope is to have these classes start dialogue within families to promote good financial decisions for the future. The youth class will be open to all high school students. More details will come soon. Our day in Lansing for the youth Jamboree was one filled with inspiration and fun. It was a great day for everyone who participated.. We are not meeting this weekend. Enjoy the evening!! November is dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory The Church dedicates the month of November to the poor souls in purgatory. Pray for those who have gone before us who may not have anyone praying for them. EDGE Our next two EDGE meetings are Monday, November 14 and the 28. Join us for one or both evenings that will be full of fun, friendships and faith. Bring a friend or meet someone new. During each Simply Give campaign at the Howell Meijer store, customers are encouraged to purchase a $10 Simply Give donation card upon checkout. It can be scanned multiple times for a larger donation. The customer keeps the card as their tax receipt. Once purchased, the donation is converted into a Meijer Food-Only Gift Card and donated directly to the St. Joseph food pantry. Hunger is a problem that occurs in all of our communities, which is why the funds generated from Simply Give stay local. Hank Meijer said, "The Simply Give program gives everyone a chance to work toward ensuring that no one in the communities we serve has to go without food. The holiday Simply Give campaign will run October 30 through December 31. Meijer will double match customers donations
