2 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED COME, HOLY SPIRIT!! On the Church s calendar, the Feast of Pentecost is the third most important celebration. Pentecost completes the Easter mystery when Christ poured out His life, the Holy Spirit, upon His disciples. On Monday, I read a homily by St. Cyril of Jerusalem (he lived through much of the fourth century and served as bishop of Jerusalem). Cyril wrote a catechism, an explanation of all that we believe, for those who were preparing for Baptism. In that catechism, he tried to explain the mystery of the Holy Spirit by saying that the Spirit is like water. Like water, the Spirit gives life. As rain, water falls on everyone but has a different effect on everything watered by the rain. It brings forth flowers, grain and towering pines; each enriching the life of others. In the same way, the Spirit brings forth a variety of different gifts and ministries in each of us. What was amazing is that this fourth century saint had no clue how large the earth was nor did he know the science of water s importance. But it gave me a great deal to think about, especially how the Holy Spirit inspires us. I share this with you in hope that we think of this again when thirst sends us for a drink of water. THE RESULTS In Galatians 5:22, St. Paul used the word fruits to describe the effects or the results of the Holy Spirit in our lives. As you left today, you were asked to draw a slip of paper from a basket. Each slip lists a fruit or a result of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. In Galatians 5:22, St. Paul lists nine fruits or results of the Holy Spirit. They are: patience, kindness, love, joy, peace, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (St. Paul wrote in Greek and there many different ways that a Greek word can be translated into English. So lists may vary.) I hope you will pray that the Holy Spirit enables this gift to grow in your life. Remember this result is a gift, produced by the Holy Spirit within us, not for our own good, but for the good of others! WELLNESS SURVEY Our Wellness Team has created a 2 minute survey to help them plan future programs for the health and well-being of the members of our community. You can fill out the survey on-line at our parish website or fill out a paper copy at the Welcome Desk! Thanks for your help! DSA 2018 We are four weeks into the annual Diocesan Services Appeal (DSA). If you have not made a gift or a pledge, I hope you join me in supporting almost 100 ministries funded by DSA! Fr. Dave Howell STORIES OF THE PARISH Nuggets From the Beginning Deacon Dave Does anyone remember the time when we had Saturday Liturgy at Farms Middle School when Fr. Dave was on vacation? We had a priest coming in from the Lansing area for the weekend masses. Those responsible for setting up for Mass arrived and everything was set up, chairs in place, altar setup, backdrop hung, everything ready to go. As people began to arrive, Marilyn Pence and I were waiting for the priest so we could guide him through some of the unique Liturgy elements and answer any questions or address any of his needs. Well, at fifteen minutes before the Liturgy was to begin we began to look for Father. No show! Five minutes before starting time, we were still waiting. No priest! Ready to begin and still no priest! What do we do? Marilyn and I put our heads together and decided I would announce we did not have a priest yet and the people still had time to go to St. Pat s in time for Liturgy if they wanted. If not, we would do a Sunday Celebration in the absence of a priest. Both Marilyn and I were qualified to do that. We decided on a plan, determining which of us would do the different elements of the service. That settled, I told the people that we would begin in fifteen minutes, about fifteen minutes after Mass would have begun. As we prepared to begin, we see a priest, flying in, as fast as he could run. Stop. He finally made it, stopped to get his breath, vested, and began Mass. What a day! As the saying goes all s well that ends well. After Mass, Father announced that there was a bad accident on M59 and Argentine Road, and no one could go anywhere. The sad part of this memory is that two people were killed in that accident. Event number two: Again at Farms Middle School, we arrived to begin setting up the altar, chairs and everything else that we would need. Big problem! The school was locked. People began arriving, and we did not know what to do. Then a light came on. It was a beautiful day, so why not do Mass outside? We had a chapel at the rectory that had a movable altar, a tabernacle, and a few chairs. Why not? We had a priest, just not a building. We all made a beeline for the rectory and began to move the altar and all the chairs outside. That Liturgy had about two hundred people, with the elderly sitting and everyone else standing. Later everyone said that Mass was fun. That may have superseded our current outdoor Liturgy at the picnic. In my opinion, Mass under God s canopy is the best! Another event: Again when we were at Farms Middle School, a family had a little daughter. When she was very young, she would come to Mass at the school with her parents. Her mom and dad explained to her what was going on and who the people in long robes were, Father Dave and Deacon Dave. Well in her mind, it became Deac and Dave. Even today, she will even call me Deac and she is twenty years old. It looks like that name stuck because some of the other young people today call me Deac. So many wonderful and cherished memories. Being here at the beginning was definitely special. Witnessing what Saint Mary Magdalen has become and the wonderful people I have come to know is the most special memory.

This was a place where the people worshipped many gods and goddesses. Moses reminds them there is only one God the One who brought them out of Egypt. Romans 8:14-17 Paul s letter to the Romans is his most detailed and important theological work. In this portion of the letter, Paul stressed the importance of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians. Through the Spirit s presence within us, we enjoy not only new life but also a new relationship with God, whom we can call by a new name. Matthew 28:16-20 The resurrected Jesus reveals Himself in a new way, which explains why those who had doubts fell down in homage. He is now the Christ, with full authority. It is in that authority that He gives the great missionary command to those who remain faithful; Go, and make disciples. Reflect: Which member of the Trinity do you most address in prayer? Why is that? 4 RELIGIOUS FORMATION NEWS Roxanne Hundsrucker Pentecost Today we celebrate the day the third person of our triune God descending upon the Apostles. On this glorious day, when these first disciples of Jesus Christ were filled with the Holy Spirit, they were given seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgement (Counsel), Courage (Fortitude), Knowledge, Reverence (Piety), and Wonder and Awe in God s Presence (Fear of the Lord). These gifts from God, along with the seven virtues, were to assist the apostles in forming disciples. All of us, too, are filled with the Holy Spirit, and Jesus freely shares these seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit with every baptized individual. At the sacrament of Confirmation we are sealed with these sanctifying gifts to help us grow in holiness, to live as disciples of Christ and to help form other disciples as well. Religious Formation Thank You As we wrap-up the religious formation year it is very important to thank all catechists, cocatechists, adult and teen classroom aides, hallway monitors and nursery helpers. Thank you all so very much for sharing your gifts of time and talent with the children and families of the parish community. We have over seventy-five volunteers in our religious formation program. Some volunteers helped out a few hours a week and some a few hours a month, but all are truly appreciated. A great big thank-you goes out to all who lead Children s Liturgy of the Word as well. Father Dave and our Formation team hosted a wonderful Thank-You Reception last weekend for all of these great people including our RCIA and Youth Ministry volunteers. Volunteers for Religious Formation We continue to ask members of the parish to volunteer in our formation programs for the children of the parish. All of the roles listed in my Thank-you above are needed for next year. If you have a few hours or several hours to share, please pray on what role fits your ability. The more hall monitors, nursery helpers and Children s Liturgy leaders we gain, the less frequent our volunteers need to be present. So although we would love to have some new faces in the classroom, you do not need to commit to every week and lesson planning. As a grandparent with two small grandchildren living in Kansas, I truly love being around the young children of our parish. This gives me an opportunity to be in the know with latest trends among children and parents. YOUTH NEWS Margaret Callaghan Mark your calendar for these future upcoming YG events. 5 OF FAITH AND SERVICE Sr. Joyce Hoile, OSF Come, Holy Spirit! The Spirit is Amovin all over, all over this land Today we congratulate and welcome Thomas Ronald Nickerson, coming into full Communion with his Profession of Faith, Eucharist and Confirmation, and Sean Michael Hughes, receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. Mother of the Church: New Memorial Pope Francis made the decision that the Church celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as Mother of the Church every year on the Monday after Pentecost. This year it is Monday, May 21 st. The title Mother of the Church was given to the Blessed Mother by Blessed Pope Paul VI at the Second Vatican Council. Pope Francis added the memorial to the Roman Calendar after carefully considering how the promotion of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, under this particular title, might encourage growth in the maternal sense of the Church and in genuine Marian piety. Bible at the Beach By popular request, we will again have Bible at the Beach at Kensington Park. Mondays, June 11, 18, 25 we will meet at 12:30 pm for a bag lunch followed by a study of the upcoming Sunday Readings. ~Sister Joyce WELLNESS QUOTE I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet. -Mahatma Gandhi VIDEO MINISTERS NEEDED We are looking for a few more people to help on the Video Ministry Team.
