1 They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. Mark 9:34-35 Ellos se quedaron callados, pues habían discutido entre sí sobre quién era el más importante de todos. Entonces se sentó, llamó a los doce y les dijo: Si alguno quiere ser el primero, que se haga el último y el servidor de todos." Marcos 9:34-35

5 Overwhelming the Darkness As the daily news rightfully draws our attention to the sin and evil that some members of the Catholic Church have committed, it is also important to continually recognize the good that most members of faith have done and are doing every day. To recognize the good that surrounds us, the good that God and others do; is not to downplay or ignore the reality of the heinous acts of evil that are sexual abuse. Nor does recognizing the good mean to avoid taking action to stop abuse. Rather, we recognize the good that surrounds us because it too is real and we must refuse to allow the darkness to overcome the light. Of the one billion people who identify themselves as Catholics worldwide, approximately.04% (405,100) are clergy (not including deacons). The overwhelming majority of clergy are innocent of the vile crimes that are being unveiled. Similarly, the majority of the 99.96% of the church, which consists of the laity, is also innocent of sexual abuse. However, a small percentage of such a big number is staggering and horrific. One crime of abuse is staggering and horrific. The point? What an enormous amount of evil and harm such a small percentage of people can do! And, what an enormous amount of good the rest of us the overwhelming majority have done, do, and will continue to do to overwhelm the darkness. Again, recognizing the goodness will not divert us from also working to make the necessary changes to stop the crime and coverup of sexual abuse and any other abuse of trust. Last Saturday, about 200 of your fellow parishioners joined the priests for Mass and a Holy Hour for Hope and Healing. It was a powerful time to join together as the church before the Light who is Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Human action that does not begin with divine intervention (prayer) is sure to fail. Likewise, prayer without human action (works) is dead. Last weekend, Jesus told Peter, Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do (Mk 8:33). To pray is to heed Jesus words to put on the mind of God, to think as God does. A simple renovation of a house sometimes uncovers unexpected, costly, and discouraging problems; things that need to be repaired or completely replaced. Along those lines, things may get much worse in the Catholic Church before they get better. Please do not get discouraged. Yet, if you start to feel discouraged, please find someone trusted to talk with openly about your feelings early on please do not wait nor let your feelings overwhelm you. While the devil attempts to hide or disguise evil, the Holy Spirit brings the darkness into the light in order to be purified. In that same vein, what can become a horrendous renovation project is also the labor and love for a beautiful house coming into being. To transform the darkness into light, we need to spend each day in the Light by praying as individuals, families, and a parish family. Make an effort to overcome the darkness in your life by ridding yourself of sin particularly through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Fill your home and community with goodness by being active in a ministry/charity that serves others. Without any doubt, what an enormous amount of evil and harm such a small percentage of people have done! And, what an enormous amount of good the rest of us the overwhelming majority are going to do to overwhelm the darkness with light. Driving out darkness is the work of God and it is also our work. Jesus tells us, You are the Light of the world (Mt 5:14a). I will continue to share information with you good and bad. Please stay informed through the weekly e-newsletter called The Beacon, the bulletin (which is also included in The Beacon), the parish website, parish social media, the school weekly e-newsletter called The Post, and pre-mass Announcements. 6 LIFT OFF TO LITERACY Favorite Children s Author Barney Saltzberg Visits School The Lift Off to Literacy program is a reading incentive program for our TYKES - 5th Grade which focuses on building a love of reading and establishing positive reading habits. Run throughout the fall, Lift Off encompasses a variety of programs, including guest speakers, themed days including Star Wars Reads and Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character, and a 60-Day reading challenge. In its fifth anniversary at St. Edward, this year s theme is Building a Culture of Literacy. Children and their families are encouraged to engage in literacy experiences during and after school in ways that create a lifelong love of reading versus viewing it as homework or a required task. The program kicked off on September 11 with a visit from famed children s author and illustrator Barney Saltzberg. He inspired and motivated our learners, speaking about kindness, school experiences, life as an author and illustrator, editing and the magic of storyboarding. Father Brendan thanks everyone for abiding by the new parking rules in effect for the parish, as well as for making an effort to drive slower and obey traffic rules. Please remember to be respectful of our neighbors and avoid parking or dropping off anyone in the neighborhoods surrounding the parish and, instead, to park only on our parish property. Thank you!
