4 Pastoral Center Update The Pastoral Center project continues to make forward progress. St. Edward has received both approvals from the Diocese and the Holy See. As such, we are now going thru the plan submittals and revisions process with the City of Dana Point. It is our hope to be thru that process in Fall of this year. As the warm days of summer are upon us, the staff at St. Edward has also taken some time for vacation and to rejuvenate with family and friends. To that end, although it may seem like the project has slowed down, in fact, we continue on with momentum. Therefore, a big THANK YOU to the many donors that have pledged/contributed just over $10.4 million to the Expanding to Love and Serve campaign. We very much appreciate your support to this very much needed rehabilitation of our parish meeting spaces. Keep an eye on our website, the bulletin and the Beacon for the very latest information on the Pastoral Center. 5 Take God on Vacation with You For me, as well as many of you, I have found that taking God on vacation helps to make for a more restful, relaxing and meaningful vacation. Many times parishioners are changing vacations into pilgrimages especially to the Holy Land, the Holy See, or for us from the Green Isle, Ireland!!! So how do you take God with you? The easiest way is to make a dedicated time perhaps each morning to be with God and be grateful for the chance to be on vacation either by yourself or with loved ones. You can pray as a group or find individual time to pray and give thanks to God for the many blessings in our lives, as well as asking for those supplications of our needs. There are endless online resources from FORMED (and the free subscription provided by the parish to everyone) to the many Podcasts from our own Faith Formation program to ensuring we have a good for your family so that the Beacon never misses you while you are away. Additionally, Franciscan Media s Saint of the Day, the Diocese of Orange, the USCCB and the Vatican website have great content to reflect upon even when you have your feet in the water and not a care in the world So, consider taking God with you on vacation. He wants to spend time with you, your family and friends. They set up the coffee and cookie station, made pots of great coffee and kept up on the demand for cookies. Ralph has hosted the coffee station for several years. 8 Natural Family Planning Awareness week July 22 28, 2018 Celebrating the 50 th Anniversary of the papal encyclical, Humanae Vitae (HV), written by Blessed Pope Paul VI Generations of Love is the theme of this year s Natural Family Planning Awareness Week, a national educational campaign of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to celebrate God s design for married love and the gift of life and to raise awareness of Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods. NFP, as the U.S. bishops have written, is supportive of Catholic beliefs about married love because it respects the God-given power to love a new human life into being (see, U.S. Bishops, Married Love and the Gift of Life). This year s theme invites a reflection on the anniversary of Pope Paul VI s landmark encyclical that provides beautiful and clear teaching about God's plan for married love and the transmission of life. In Humanae Vitae, Blessed Pope Paul VI reflects upon how God designed the nature of married love. This he draws from Sacred Scripture and the Catholic Tradition. The Holy Father writes that married love is fully human (involving the body and soul). Married love is total, faithful, and fruitful (see HV no. 9). NFP is not rhythm. It is based on observable symptoms of the fertile and infertile phases of 50th Anniversary the menstrual cycle based on over 30 years of scientific research. NFP tracks the changes associated with ovulation and not only treats each woman as unique, but each cycle as well. NaProTECHNOLOGY (Natural Procreative Technology) is a new women's health science that monitors and maintains a woman's reproductive and gynecological health. It provides medical and surgical treatments that cooperate completely with the reproductive system to treat infertility, PMS, postpartum depression and many more problems. 9 Parish Ministries Extraordinary Ministers (EMs) of Holy Communion Needed for Saturday 5:30 p.m. Mass If you are willing to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EM) a couple of times a month at Sunday Masses, please complete the EM application and turn it into the parish office. Call: Rocco Falabella Altar Guild Ministry Needs Volunteer Altar Guild is the liturgical ministry whose volunteer members help prepare the church for the Mass by performing duties such as washing the holy vessels used in the Mass and tidying up areas of worship. Although the time commitment is minimal (a couple of hours once a month), our services have a significant impact on the appearance of the church and in the performance of the Mass ritual. We meet the 3rd Thursday of the month in the Church Meeting Room at 6:30 p.m. For information about our group, please call Suzanne Williams (949) Tijuana Ministry 9:00 a.m. Every Thursday after the 8:15 a.m. Mass volunteers make approximately 300 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches which are taken to Tijuana on Friday and distributed to the jail inmates, the homeless and needy.
