4 Dana Point Planning Commission Public Hearing on the Pastoral Center Project The City of Dana Point has set a public hearing to consider approvals of our Pastoral Center Project for Monday, December 3, 2018, beginning at 6 pm at the Dana Point Community Center located at Del Obispo Street (between Stonehill and PCH). It is very important for the Parish to have a strong showing of support for our shared project. No one has to speak nor provide testimony for the project those speakers have been already identified. What is important is for you, your family, and friends to attend the meeting and to raise your hands in support when asked at the meeting to do so. We especially need residents and business owners of Dana Point to attend and show support -- although all are very much welcome! Will you take an hour to help me finalize City legislative approval for our project? The success of this project depends upon it and I hope you will find an hour to attend the meeting with me and several of your fellow parishioners on Monday, December 3rd. I need your support to get our project successfully past this significant decision-point with the City. If you cannot attend, please pray for our success. 5 Two Ways to Share Christmas with Someone Less Fortunate Here are two opportunities for your family to share the joy of Christmas with a local poor person or family. #1 Donate a Gift Card for the Poor St. Vincent de Paul Gift Card Tree Give joy anonymously to someone by donating a gift card for the poor in our community. You can support the outreach efforts of St. Vincent de Paul by taking an envelope from the Gift Card Tree in the back of church and returning it to the St. Edward Parish Office by Wednesday, December 19 with a gift card, cash or check. We suggest gasoline cards, gift cards from food stores or from stores like Wal-Mart or CVS and drug stores. Your gifts will be used during the holidays and throughout the year to help the poor. Checks may be written to St. Vincent de Paul or to St. Edward Church with SVDP on the memo line. Thank you. #2 Donate a Toy for a Child or a Gift Card for a Teen Many of our local children in need will not have a Christmas present other that what is provided through FAM. Please help us bring joy to a child this Christmas by donating a toy or a gift card. These gifts will be given to poor children at the Children s Christmas Party hosted by Family Assistance Ministries (FAM), our partner in serving the poor and homeless on Fridays at San Felipe. TOYS: for children 0 thru 12 years. Please leave an unwrapped new toy in the box marked Toys in the toy box in the back of church no later than Wednesday, December 12th. The most popular toys are dolls, Barbie's, legos, sport balls, science and art & craft kits. Toys that are not popular are coloring books, puzzles and board games. GIFT CARDS: for teens 13 thru 17 years. Please put a gift card in the Parish Office TEEN GIFT BOX no later than Wednesday, December 12th. Most popular gift cards for teens are Vis/Master Card, Walmart, Target, Forever 21, movie theaters, Starbucks. Denominations of $25 are preferred. 9 What is a Posada? The tradition of the Posadas was brought to Mexico from Spain in the 1500's by Catholic Missionaries. The Posadas commemorate Mary and Joseph's difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a place for the Christ Child to be born. In Spanish, the word means dwelling or lodging. The Posadas begin on December 16 for nine evenings, culminating with the Posada on December 24 and Midnight Mass. The Posadas are not to be confused with a mere Christmas party. Instead, the Posadas should be seen as a religious event. In Catholic parishes, parishioners and anyone who wishes to join in, meet at the church at a specific time during the early evening. The Posada begins with the recitation of the Holy Rosary, a very beautiful prayer to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. When a part of the Rosary is prayed by all those who have gathered for the Posada, the group begins to proceed from the church to the local neighborhood. The Posada can be led by a small group carrying a manger scene or the Posada can become quite elaborate with a live donkey and parishioners who are dressed like Mary and Joseph. Families in the neighborhood are already previously selected to participate in the Posada. Usually three houses are selected where the Posada does not take place. The participants stand before the door of each house and sing a song in Spanish asking to enter the house. A small group remains inside the house telling the outside group that it is impossible to enter. Another family has been already selected to provide the Posada. The group proceeds along the street to the Posada house. Again, the Posada group sings from outside of the selected house and a small group sings the response from inside the house where the Posada will take place. La Posada dinner, provided by the host family, includes such Hispanic dishes as tamales, menudo and pozole. Each Posada ends with the traditional pińata. The seven corners of each pińata represents the Seven Deadly Sins. The beating of the pińata symbolizes the mortification that Christians exercise in overcoming personal sin. The candy within each pińata characterizes the sweetness of God's grace made available to us through the birth of Jesus.
