6 Seeking volunteers for Safety and Emergency Committee In light of the Diocese of Orange recommending that every parish establish a Safety and Emergency Committee, we are seeking volunteers to serve in this capacity. We are looking for active or recently retired professionals in the fields of emergency medicine, fire, police and private security to sit on the committee. The goal is to develop emergency plans, i.e., evacuation and emergency protocols for incidents such as fire, earthquake and other unplanned emergencies. These plans would cover all structures on the campus with the exception of the school, which has its own committee. We will also take a look at the need for liaisons with local first responders. We anticipate that participation is this committee will involve 1-2 meetings a month until the plans are promulgated, then semiannually to facilitate emergency drills and plan updates. Those interested in participating in this project should send an to me (bmanson@stedward.com) or drop it off at the church office with the following information: Contact Information: Name, Phone number, address, Field of expertise (please be specific) Years of experience Are you a registered parishioner of St. Edward the Confessor parish Brief statement as what talents you bring to the committee. You may have a number of questions about this new committee. We wish we had all the answers, but quite frankly, because this is a new direction for all of us, we will have to answer those questions as we proceed. The Diocese, as do I, recognize the substantial benefits of being prepared for emergencies. Most importantly, it can save lives! By sharing your experience and expertize we can work as a team and make this project come together. Thank you for considering being a part of the important parish objective. With Peace Fr. Brendan The right to life implies and is linked to other human rights to the basic goods that every human person needs to live and thrive. All the life issues are connected, for erosion of respect for the life of any individual or group in society necessarily diminishes respect for all life. The moral imperative to respond to the needs of our neighbors basic needs such as food, shelter, health care, education, and meaningful work is universally binding on our consciences and may be legitimately fulfilled by a variety of means. Catholics must seek the best ways to respond to these needs.above all, the common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination. 9 Catholic Social Justice Ministry Whatever You Do for the Least of These Matthew 25: 40 Our mission as a ministry and as a parish is simple. We are called to love God, serve those in need, work for justice and peace, love our neighbors and promote the sanctity of all human life and the dignity of each person. It s all spelled out there, right in Scripture, most succinctly perhaps in Matthew s Gospel, Chapter 25, verses Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. We respond to God s love for us by walking with two feet of love in action as described by the U.S. Catholic bishops: Social justice advocacy addressing structural causes of injustice, e.g., the causes of poverty, hunger, etc. Charitable works short-tem, emergency assistance, e.g., providing meals for the homeless. Both feet of love are needed to serve our brothers and sisters in need. Our ministry s current focal points of social justice advocacy are comprehensive immigration reform, human trafficking and passage of Proposition 62 on the California state November ballot. Endorsed by California s bishops, Proposition 62 seeks to replace the death penalty in California with a sentence of life without parole. A justice system without the death penalty offers several benefits, among them: No innocent persons would be killed by the state. Victims families would realize additional restitution and fewer court appearances. The cost to the state would be reduced by $150 million per year. Our Catholic Social Justice Ministry has long been involved in charitable works: hands-on Christian service that serve the poor and marginalized in our neighborhoods. Come join us as we find the face of God in the least of these brothers and sisters and in the good people who serve them. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in the church meeting room. Questions? Contact Cindy or Chuck Brauer (949) Upcoming Service Opportunities We are recruiting volunteers from St. Edward to help distribute food the following 2nd Saturday mornings at Family Assistance Ministries (FAM): November 12, January 14, March 11 and May 13. At least ten volunteers sometimes more are needed for each date to help distribute food, clothing and other items to struggling families at the FAM facility in San Clemente. To sign up for a particular date, or for more information, please contact Cindy Brauer at cbrauer4@gmail.com or (949) October 9, 2016 Page 9
