4 A Letter from Fr. David About two years ago my older sister, Vickie, moved in with my father to become his caregiver. He has Macular Degeneration and has been gradually going blind the last few years. Unfortunately, after about six months she developed Congestive Heart Failure. She received a Pacemaker which managed to save her life more than once, but suffered so much damage to her heart that the doctors told her she would eventually need a Heart Transplant. Since then she has been on various medications to sustain her but these have become less effective over time as her heart has weakened. This last July (on my birthday, no less) she suffered a series of heart attacks and I just managed to get her to the ER in time. These attacks weakened her so much that she has been in various hospitals ever since. Six weeks ago she was transferred to the Keck Center at USC Hospital which is one of the best Cardiac Hospitals in California. Once there she was put through a series of tests to get her on a priority list for a new heart and has been waiting ever since. This surgery should be happening very soon after which she will be going through some physical therapy in the hospital for roughly two weeks and then sent home where she will be unable to drive and will require care for about three months. This will include a lot of driving back and forth between the hospital, which is in LA. I have explained this situation to Bishop Vann and asked his permission for a temporary leave of absence to take care of Vickie. My father s infirmity makes it impossible for him to look after her given his condition and his own need for assistance. We are not sure exactly when the surgery will take place, but expect it to happen soon. I ask for your prayers for my sister, Vickie, as well as for myself and the rest of my family in this difficult time. Depending upon when the surgery takes place and if all goes as hoped I could return to the Parish sometime in the latter half of January. This will put a lot of extra burden on Fr. Brendan and Fr. Armando, as well as the rest of the staff. I ask that you pray for them as well and assist them in any way you can. Yours in Christ, Fr. 5 Life & Dignity Month Moved by Mercy During the month of October we celebrate Life and Dignity Month. It is my prayer that God will help us see creation just as he does for God looked at everything he had made, and found it very good (GN 1:3). In particular, let s pause to marvel at the crown of his creation, human life, which is "the only creature on earth that God has willed for its own sake (Gaudium et Spes 24,3). God said: Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the tame animals, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that crawl on the earth. (Gn 1:26) Not only did God create us in his own divine image and likeness, but he has given us dominion over everything; that is, he wants us to care for all created things just as he would care for them, not as owners but stewards. As stewards of life and, in particular, human life, let us rededicate ourselves to seeing God s image and likeness in every human life, as difficult as that can sometimes be. Life and Dignity Month covers the whole spectrum of God s creation. Here are just some examples of what being a steward of life entails: Abortion + Post-Abortion Healing + Project Rachel + RU Abstinence and Chastity + Reproductive Technology + Stem Cell Research + Assisted Suicide + Contraception + Sterilization + Cloning + Asylum + Citizenship Criminal Justice - Restorative Justice + Death Penalty-Capital Punishment + Debt Relief + Domestic Violence + Economic Justice + Euthanasia + Environment + Health Care + Agriculture, Nutrition, and Rural Issues + Engaged Couples + Married Couples + Support of Elderly + Dementia / Alzheimer s Care + People with Disabilities + Homosexuality + Same Sex Unions + Homelessness + Human Trafficking + Hunger, Food, Nutrition + Immigration + Labor Employment + Migrants, Refugees and Travelers + Asylees + Poverty + Pornography + Racism + Religious Liberty + Sexual Abuse + Human Rights/Torture + Violence + War and Peace + Arms Trade + Nuclear weapons. We have two months left in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Let s double our efforts in being bridges of mercy and taking action to care for all life.
