3 Theology of the Body (Column 37) Marriage as a Sacrament a study of Ephesians 5:21-33 When a couple contracepts, they separate the sexual act, not only from one of its natural ends (the begetting of children), but also from its sacramental meaning, purpose, and fruitfulness. I don t just mean fruitfulness in the begetting of new human life but fruitfulness in the spiritual life of Grace. We may not like it, we may wish God did otherwise, but the truth is God has willed and consecrated sexual intercourse as a sacramental act through which the life of Grace is given. Not every sexual act will be or needs to be fruitful in the begetting of a new human life, however, we cannot deliberately separate it from its natural, personal, and sacramental meaning. Personal because the meaning of the person, created male and female in the Divine image, is stamped into their bodies, their very flesh. This is true even for those who are celibate and those who are single: their very persons: body and soul, must express their meaning and purpose in the image of God and our eventual physical union, body and soul, in the glory of Heaven. This is why every sexual act separated from its purpose and meaning is an offense against the Image of God and the dignity and meaning of the human person created in that image. As mentioned, not every sexual act must be physically fruitful. A couple may use natural family planning to space out births for a just reason: health of the woman, strength of the marriage, financial concerns, to name a few. Natural family planning is not the rhythm method. It pinpoints when a woman is fertile to a margin of 98-99% accuracy even if the woman has an irregular cycle. It is determined by tracking body temperature, cervical mucus, and hormonal changes. If you are not familiar with this method I invite you and encourage you to look it up and learn it. Most couples who use it testify that it has improved their relationship. One may wonder what the difference is from waiting until a person is naturally infertile or deliberately preventing conception or causing infertility through the pill, IUDs, sterilization, condoms, or withdrawal. The intention and the end is the same so why not? By this logic we would have to say that the only time any couple could have sexual intercourse is when the woman is fertile. This is silly. God has instilled in the natural order a cycle because He does not intend that every sexual intercourse should result in pregnancy. The couple is not separating the sexual act from its sacramental and natural purpose, nature provides for times of infertility. The couple can use this to their ends of regulating births because that is a just end. The intention is not to contracept but to limit the number of pregnancies. The intention and end in this case are morally good. It is not the intention to limit the number of children that is immoral, but the intention to contracept or sterilize that is immoral. As long as the end intended is not no children and the number of children is limited for a just reason and there are plenty-- the ends are morally justified. The ends do not justify the means: contraception and sterilization are an immoral means. Please note, many pills and IUDs are abortifications: they do not prevent conception but prevent the newly conceived child from attaching to the womb. Conclusion We are human persons: both spiritual and physical at the same time. We are Body and Soul we do not have Body and Soul. The soul does not possess the body nor does the body possess a soul. We are body soul composites similar to flour and water mixed together. This truth images God our creator. The image of the Creator is stamped into our very being as created male and female, in the Divine image. Also, as male and female, that the two may become one flesh. What is done in the body, to the body, and through the body is done in the person, to the person, and through the person as an image of God. The sexual union of a man and woman has been consecrated by God as an act of the Sacrament of Marriage and as such is to beget life: the life of Grace and occasionally another human life. Any act that separates the sexual act from its purpose and meaning is not only an offense against the natural law God created, but the Supernatural law of Grace and Love, and against the dignity of the person created male and female in the Divine Image. The fruit of this separation can only be death: physical and spiritual. However, when the Theology of the Body is lived out as God has intended, as a sacrificial gift of oneself to another, without reservation, faithfully and fruitfully until death, as Christ has given Himself to His Bride the Church in the paschal mystery of the Eucharist, then it bears the fruit of life, possibly new human life, but always the life of Grace for each person in the marriage, for the marriage and their true union as one, for the family and from the marriage and family to society. That grace flows from society to the world, effecting peace between peoples and nations and with the world and the natural order. It is a fundamental sacrament of Grace. In Jesus and Mary,

Festa Italiana The Church of St. John the Evangelist and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church will hold its annual Festa Italiana on July 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th, 2018 on the Church grounds of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 92 South Lexington Avenue, White Plains, NY Thurs. & Fri. 6:00 pm 11:00 pm, Sat. 5:00-11:00 pm Sun. 2:00 pm 8:00 pm. The Festa features live Italian and American music and entertainment, an outdoor dance floor, children s games and entertainment, great Italian food and desserts, American fare, espresso bar, air conditioned casino, and much more. The admission and entertainment are free. The Procession of the Statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will take place on Sunday, July 15th. It is a public procession of prayer to honor the Virgin Mary. Families with children, who rely on free or reducedcost breakfast and/or lunch at school, need to find a way to replace those meals during summer break. They turn to their local food bank or pantry for assistance. Please help out during this time with donations of CEREAL when you buy a box for your family, pick up an extra.
