3 RESPECT LIFE MONTH I fear that many of our Catholic brothers and sisters view the issue of abortion as merely an extreme form of birth control. They are opposed to such an extreme method, but since they still categorize it as birth control, they do not see any reason to make it a political issue because to do such would impose their morality on others. Some do see it as a political issue but relegate it to a secondary issue, either because it does not affect them or because they fail to see the seriousness of what an abortion is, again because they primarily view it as birth control. Not the Only issue! While it is absolutely true that abortion is not the only issue, and not even the only moral issue, facing this election and any other election, it is the most pre-eminent issue facing our society today. I quote St. John Paul II in his encyclical: The Gospel of Life: 58. Among all the crimes which can be committed against life, procured abortion has characteristics making it particularly serious and deplorable. The Second Vatican Council defines abortion, together with infanticide, as an unspeakable crime. But today, in many people s consciences, the perception of its gravity has become progressively obscured. The acceptance of abortion in the popular mind, in behavior and even in law itself, is a telling sign of an extremely dangerous crisis of the moral sense, which is becoming more and more incapable of distinguishing between good and evil, even when the fundamental right to life is at stake. This issue outweighs all other issues that we are facing today. We can disagree on what is the best way to address the economy, jobs, war and peace, the poor, taxes, immigration, etc. but there should be no disagreement on the issue of abortion, especially as Christians. Abortion has become a systematic and legalized way of murdering the most innocent and weakest members of society, plain and simple. I cannot impose my moral views on others! Bllsht! It is done all the time. Excuse the reference to the emphatic expletive, but this argument is so stupid. Name any law that does not impose the views of some on the general population! There are none. Killing and Steeling are moral issues are they not? Do we not have laws against them? Abortion is murder, it is not merely personal morality. The TRUTH that it is MURDER does not rest on Catholic Teaching but on SCIENTIFIC FACT and NATURAL LAW. It is the natural law on which are based all laws against murder and theft. What if both Politicians are Pro-abortion? The first question to ask is whether they promote abortions to the same degree. If one politician believes in limiting abortions and applying more restrictions, but favors that it remains legal, and the other politician wants access to remain as is, or even become easier, then it is morally permissible to vote for the candidate that will restrict access to abortions. If both are equally in favor of promoting access to abortions one can have their voice heard by not voting for either candidate. (Please confer The Gospel of Life, paragraphs ) Form your conscience. Obviously we have every legal right to vote for whom we choose and we should vote with certainty and clarity of conscience. However, we must inform our conscience as to what is true, right and just. We are morally required by God to act in a way that is consistent with a correctly formed Catholic conscience. To be indifferent to this issue, with the clarity of truth and our Catholic faith, would be a grave moral error. Please, don t be mad at me! I know some will be upset at me for writing this column. I am not telling you who to vote for. That is your decision, but I am asking you to take very seriously this issue. I am tempted to avoid controversy by scrapping this column, but my dislike for angry letters and even the fear that a person may stop coming to St. Patrick s for Mass because I spoke out so strongly on a controversial topic is hardly legitimate grounds to be silent or water down my words. I am in moral peril if I do not preach the Gospel and this is part of the Gospel of life! 5 TEEN LIFE Children s Masses I try to rotate the grades 1-7 for a homily directed at them. Also, the children will sponsor the Mass by doing the readings, handing out bulletins, and their parents setting up the coffee social after Mass. (Please, parents, volunteer for your child s grade level Thanks.)
