3 Theology of the Body (Column 1) Introduction I am starting a new series. This series will follow Pope St. John Paul II s series that he gave during his weekly Wednesday general audience from September 5, 1979 until November 28, At times either he interrupted his series or he was interrupted (for example the time he was shot and spent recuperating). In total he prepared 133 talks on this topic over the period of five years. My intentions is to present and explain this theology in terms I hope you can follow and understand. I am at the same time conducting a course in this on Thursday evenings at 7pm. This is not a substitute for the course. The course will be far more interesting and will have questions and answers to help the individual understand the great mysteries of our faith that the Theology of the Body helps to, unwrap, reveal, and penetrate. I will mostly follow the Theology of the Body as Pope St. John Paul II presented it, but, remaining faithful to the content, at times I will present parts in a different sequence and use my own analogies and images. Generally this will be in my own words. I will try to always be faithful in indicating when the exact words of Pope St. John Paul are used. Many of his words and expressions on this topic have been so internalized by me that I may say exactly what he said and not give proper reference. He wrote the Theology of the Body in Polish before his election to the papacy. His general audience edition as pope was edited by him and given in Italian. I will be following the English translation as it appears in John Paul II, Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body, Translation, Introduction and Index by Michael Waldstein. Pauline Books & Media, Boston, From here on in the Theology of the Body will be TOB and references to the pope and JPII will be Pope St. John Paul II. Part One: The Words of Christ JPII begins TOB with the words of Christ from the Gospel of Matthew: Some Pharisees came to him to test him and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason? And he answered them, Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator created them male and female and said For this reason a man will leave his father and his mother and unite with his wife, and the two will be one flesh? So it is that they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined let man not separate. They objected, Why then did Moses order to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away? Jesus answered, Because of the hardness of your heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so (Mt 19:3-8) Twice our Lord refers to from the beginning. This is a key reference that brings us back to Genesis before the fall of Adam and Eve into sin. However, to help you understand Genesis I want to explain some basic truths of our faith. JPII does not go into this explanation. While his talk was to a general audience, the level of his talk was very scholarly, deep and profound. In other words, much of what he said went right over the heads of many listening to him, happy to get a glimpse of the pope and to receive his apostolic blessing. Why does he do this? He is not giving a basic catechism lesson, nor is he writing a papal document, but, rather as pope, shepherd and teacher, he is developing basic truths of our faith and explaining them in such a way as to have a lasting impact on the whole church. An encyclical letter would not be sufficient to develop the Theology, and taking the time to explain basic catechesis, or use a language all could understand, would diminish the importance of TOB. It is left to scholars to read, study, and digest, and for teachers to explain in a way for the common person who may have very little catechetical knowledge, let alone understanding. I don t say this to insult my readers, but I have learned over the past 27 years of priesthood not to take basic truths of our faith for granted. While I may not be explaining this to the person or persons with the lowest degree of understanding, I hope most will understand and find what I write edifying enough. Registration sheets are located at the Church entrances. You can also register online. The fee is $15, due by October 5th. The study will be conducted by Fr. Jeffrey Galens using Christopher West s DVD series: An Introduction to the Theology of the Body.
