3 The 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima Part II Story: On reaching us he said: Do not be afraid! I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me. Kneeling on the ground, he bowed down until his forehead touched the ground, and made us repeat these words three times: My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You! I ask pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You. Then rising he said: Pray thus. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications. Comment: I would think that anyone would be afraid if any spiritual being appeared to them. Do not be afraid is saying more than they may have been startled. Nor should one think that the Angel was scary in appearance: Lucia s description of the Angel gives no hint of the Angel looking scary but on the contrary beautiful in appearance. Fear here could mean awe in the presence of something before unseen, so majestic and beautiful and powerful. Again there is no indication they were afraid that the Angel might do them harm. Fear here could also mean fear of what this heavenly creature as come to ask of them. There is also the possibility that Do not be afraid is an echo of what the Angels declared when they visited other persons as recorded in the Scriptures: as the Angel Gabriel declared to Mary Do not be afraid Mary. Finally, it could be case that all three of these explanations of fear apply which seems most reasonable. The angel identified itself as the Angel of Peace. Is this a reference to the angel s particular identity amongst the other angels of heaven? Possibly so, but no explanation was given. It should be understood that the term angel simply means messenger. In this light the Angel could be saying simply I am the messenger of peace. The main point here is the term peace. The world was in the midst of World War I and atheistic Marxism was beginning to spread in Europe. This address of the angel should be understood in the context of the times, particularly in Russia. While the war was worldwide, we will eventually learn that the primary thrust of the Fatima message was in opposition to the evil of atheistic Marxism. Yes, we learn this in the whole story of Fatima but also in the message of this angel. The angel tells the children Pray with me. Prayer is fundamental to the whole message of Fatima. While the world was at war in a bloody, physical way, there is a more fundamental war that is taking place, a spiritual war. Just as the physical realities of war will deeply wound the soul of mankind, so to the spiritual war will deeply wound the physical reality of mankind s life on earth. All wars and evils that we suffer are the fruits of Satan s war against Christ, His Church and all of mankind. Many who seem complicit and vehicles of his evil are in truth victims duped by his cunning and lies. If we want peace in our world, we must win the spiritual war of good against evil. Only God is good and all goodness comes from God. Evil is the rebellion against God: the truth of His existence, the truth of His laws, the truth of His goodness, mercy, and love. Only by acknowledging the primacy and the need of God can we hope to defeat evil. Prayer is an act of humility by which the creature turns in necessity to God, our creator, for every good thing. To begin without prayer, to hope to conquer evil and achieve peace without prayer, is to begin and hope without God, on our own. This is pride. Since it is hopeless, all means to reach the end of a just world become permissible and grave evils are justified in the hearts and mind of mankind. True prayer puts things in their proper order, all goodness and peace and justice and truth come from God. God must have primary place in our life. Prayer is essential. Notice the manner of the Angel s prayer: Kneeling on the ground, he bowed down until his forehead touched the ground. The Angel is not a physical being and yet even the manner of his prayer says loudly that we must pray with our bodies. The unity of the soul and the body is proclaimed. Lucia explains that they imitated the Angel s gestures as if a force or urge to do so was compelling them. The Angel wanted them to pray thus. This does not mean we must always pray thus or ever. The Angel wanted their prayer not to be just spiritual but physical word and body. So should our prayer be in deference to God whom we pray to, a spiritual and physical proclamation of adoration of God. A note to be remembered: this physical manner of prayer is the manner in which Muslims pray. It will be much later before I get to this, but I want to make a note of it now while covering the Angel s actions. Lesson: 3. Pray with your body and soul in adoration of God. 4.
