3 ADDRESSING THE ACCUSATIONS OF ARCHBISHOP VIGANO REGARDING POPE FRANCIS Now I want to address the issue of Archbishop Vigano s letter accusing various church leaders, and even the Pope, of covering for Cardinal McCarrick. The reason I want to address this issue is because I have had a number of people ask me how they should approach the issue. They ask because they wonder if they can be critical of the Pope. They have deep respect for the office of the papacy and for Pope Francis, but they are troubled by the accusations and the Pope s silence on the issue. Archbishop Vigano s accusations are credible. Even if you do not believe him, it cannot be denied that his accusations are credible and should be taken seriously. Why are they credible? 1. He is an Archbishop who was in a position to know what took place. Much of what he accuses is based on firsthand experience and not from someone else. 2. The specific nature of his accusations. 3. Some of what he has stated has already been collaborated. 4. No one has disputed the facts with any evidence. 5. Those who dismiss the accusations do so not based on the facts presented, but by attacking the whistle blower personally. 6. Some of these attacks against Archbishop Vigano consist of accusations of lies and misdeeds, but evidence has come forward that has exonerated Ab. Vigano of these accusations. 7. He is very clear that over the years he is guilty of having remained silent on these scandals and he is revealing them now because of his own conscience, to make amends before he has to face our Lord in judgment. In other words he does not exonerate himself from being complicit in the silence. There is also a whole past history regarding Ab. Vigano that presents a picture of him being a bishop seeking reform in the Church and being prevented from doing so. I do not have the time or space to go into details. Exactly what does he say? You can google his letter and read it for yourself. It is an 11 page letter. In short, and the accusation I want to focus on, is the one where he accuses Pope Francis of knowing about Cardinal McCarrick s scandalous behavior. He further states that even though Pope Benedict XVI had put sanctions on Cardinal McCarrick, Pope Francis removed them and put C. McCarrick in a position of influence and advisor. Since Pope Francis has asked bishops to resign for having done the same thing, i.e., covering for priests, Ab. Vigano asks for Pope Francis to resign. All I am willing to say at this point about Ab. Vigano s accusations is that they are credible and should be taken seriously. I do believe an investigation is warranted, but since it includes the Pope, there is no authority that can authorize it at that level except the Pope himself. Pope Francis has chosen to remain silent. I put silent in because he has made some comments in homilies that could easily be understood as attacking the accuser. Can the pope be criticized? Absolutely. St. Paul called out St. Peter for hypocrisy. Criticism should be respectful of his office as Vicar of Christ and as a father figure for the Church. Many people have signed petitions asking the Holy Father to answer the accusations. Some have demanded his resignation. I personally believe this is premature until further evidence is presented. Even if Ab. Vigano s accusations are proven to be true, I would have a hard time asking him to resign. I might agree that it would be better if he did, but to outright demand or ask him to do so would be troubling for me. Why? Let me give an analogy. In a wall that is load bearing, if you remove some of the studs that carry the load it weakens the wall. If the wall has a major beam that carries the primary load and you remove it without supporting the structure above, there could be a total collapse of the structure. If the pope removes bishops who are guilty, the structure does not collapse, but he is a primary beam or pillar. I don t mean to suggest that if the pope resigned the Church would collapse, but more damage could be done if he resigns because of pressure over this conflict, and we end up with 3 popes albeit 2 popes emeritus. We could have a very bitter conclave, major divisions in the Church, even schism. Some may claim this could happen if he does not resign. Possibly, but I do not know and, therefore, I am hesitant to jump on any bandwagon calling for his resignation, even if these accusations are proven true. He may eventually resign, possibly after Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI s death, or when he feels he can no longer carry out the duties of his office adequately, but this would be a far cry from a resignation that was demanded of him and argued that he did so under duress and pressure. This service of magnificent song and moving readings from Holy Scripture is a spiritual oasis in the midst of the busy holiday hubbub, offering time for reflection, meditation, and peace. The emphasis of this Lessons and Carols is on hope, anticipation, expectation, and renewal of the self in preparation for the coming of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Our Festival Choir will lead this service, and a festive reception will follow in Wallace Hall. No previous experience necessary, but we ask that you at very least enjoy singing with others, commit to rehearsals, and practice with a CD on your own. Rehearsals are usually on p.m. Not every Wednesday, but as we get closer to December 16th, you will be expected to attend some mandatory rehearsals. St. Augustine Life s Transition Support Group A monthly support group, facilitated by Victoria Assumma LCSW-R, ACSW, will be held at the parish on the third Friday of each month starting September 21st from 7-8:30 pm. The goals are to share and support one another through life s challenges. Anyone who is struggling is welcome to attend. Annual Red Mass October 3, 2018 For the Judiciary, Attorneys, and Members of Law Enforcement and their families The Most Reverend Gerald T. Walsh, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York, will celebrate the Mass at 6:00 p.m.at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 92 South Lexington Avenue, White Plains. The Mass is sponsored by the Catholic Lawyers Guild of the Archdiocese of New York and is a solemn religious ceremony asking God to guide the legal profession toward the administration of justice. The public is invited to attend.
