3 The Role of the Papacy and Our Obligation in Faith, continued In Conclusion: The Pope as Father With this commission of Peter to Feed my lambs by our Lord, our Lord has set Peter over the Church, not simply with authority to govern as a type of prime minister to the Kingdom of Jesus Christ our King, or as simply as an authority to have the final say on doctrine and dogma to protect the Deposit of Faith entrusted to the Church by Jesus Christ. Nor is Peter over the Church as merely an instrumental means, a minister if you will, of the grace granted to us through the sacraments. With this commission our Lord has set Peter over the Church with the authority to teach, sanctify and govern not as a king, dictator, president, professor, prime minister, but as a father. When our Lord gave the keys of His kingdom to St. Peter (cf. Mt 16:19), He was making a reference to the Davidic kingship and kingdom. In the days of King David, the king appointed a man as head of his household with authority of governance. The symbol of this governance was the keys to the kingdom. Here is the passage from Isaiah (22:15-24a) that reflects this: Thus says the lord God of hosts, come, go to this steward, to Shebna, who is over the household, and say to him: What have you to do here and whom have you here, that you have hewn here a tomb for yourself, you who hew a tomb on the height, and carve a habitation for yourself in the rock? Behold, the Lord will hurl you away violently, O you strong man. He will seize firm hold on you, and whirl you round and round, and throw you like a ball into a wide land; there you shall die, and there shall be your splendid chariots, you shame of your master s house. I will thrust you from your office, and you will be cast down from your station. In that day I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilki ah, and I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your girdle on him, and will commit your authority to his hand; and he shall be a FATHER (emphasis added) to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Juda. And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. And I will fasten him like a peg in a sure place and he will become a throne of honor to his father s house. And they will hand on him the whole weight of his father s house. Our obligation to the authority of the Pope is that of children to a father. We may or may not have had a good and holy father as children when we were growing up, but regardless of how good or bad our fathers might have been, the fourth commandment still applies: You shall honor your father and mother. We owe a similar honor and obedience to the father that Christ has entrusted to His family the Church. Our fathers are not above criticism and they are certainly capable of error, sin, poor judgement, hypocrisy, crimes; however none of this gives us a right to denounce our fathers 1. With the pope who is given to us by God, even if not directly chosen by God, but with God s concurrence and permissive will for the validly elected pope, we owe obedience and respect that the 4 th Commandment requires. The pope is capable of error (when not teaching Ex Cathedra), sin, poor judgment, hypocrisy, crimes, and worse, but we must not denounce him, we still owe obedience to his just authority. We certainly may criticize him and denounce what is error or sinful, but it must be done with respect and filial love and honor. We must give a religious submission of Faith to what he teaches ex-cathedra. We must give a religious submission of intellect and will to what he teaches as part of the ordinary magisterium. We must give a religious submission of will to what laws he binds us to, and we must give honor to him for the office that he holds to sanctify and feed the lambs as a father. He holds a Holy Office, and therefore we rightly call him Holy Father; regardless of how holy he really is in his person, he is so in his office. In Jesus and Mary, 1. I am not referring here to situations of fathers who abandon their children or are guilty of grave crimes against their children, but even here, while their actions are to be denounced and one may find a foster father or adopted father, but one should never denounce the person of their biological father, even if it is necessary that they have nothing more to do with him for their own protection and good. They should always pray for him. Rather I am referring to a relatively normal relationship with one s father for the purpose of example.
