3 The Role of the Papacy and Our Obligation in Faith, continued The Authority of the Pope to Sanctify A quick review: The pope, as successor to St. Peter, has the authority to teach, govern and sanctify with the authority of Christ. I reviewed the extent and limits of his authority to teach with certainty that it is Christ who is teaching us whereby it can be said: He who hears you, hears me. (Jesus to His Apostles: cf. Luke 10:16). I also reviewed the nature of our obligation to obey the Pope in reference to Church law whereby it can be said: whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven (Matthew 16:19). Now we shall take a look at the nature of the pope s authority to sanctify. The authority of the Apostles to sanctify in the person of Jesus Christ is very clear in Sacred Scripture. Go and baptize in my name, receive the Holy Spirit, who sins you forgive are forgiven them, who sins you retain are retained, do this in remembrance of me I am not going to site all the examples. I would refer you to John s Gospel Chapters These chapters Jesus lays out His heart felt desire and plans for His Apostles and consecrates them in Truth, Sanctifies them and commissions them in this ministry. This is in John s Gospel the Last Supper and the same place where the other Gospels have the institution narrative of the Eucharist, the first Mass. The long prayer of Jesus in Chapters of John s Gospel is in essence an ordination of the Apostles. With the fullness of Holy Orders, the Apostles are so conformed to Christ that when they teach, Jesus is teaching. When they govern, Jesus is governing. When they sanctify, Jesus is sanctifying. Peter has been given special authority in this, as already explained. With Holy Orders, men are ordained bishops and this authority to teach, sanctify, and govern in the person of Jesus Christ is transmitted to them. With the Apostles it is Divine Revelation when they teach, sanctify* and govern* (*with the caveat that the substance of how they sanctify is revelation the bishops cannot do away with the words of institution at Mass but the way mass is celebrated can change, and many laws of the apostles were not meant to be divine law e.g. women must cover their heads at Mass). With the successor to the Apostles, what they teach, sanctify, and govern is not Divine Revelation. Divine Revelation as an obligation of faith that ended with the death of the last Apostle. However, every Bishop has the authority to teach, sanctify, and govern, as already explained earlier in this series. A priest receives the authority to sanctify in the person of Jesus Christ. When a priest teaches, he can only teach as the Church teaches, he cannot advance Church doctrine except as advice to the bishops. The words of Christ, He who hears you, hears me cannot be applied to a priest, only to a bishop and of course whenever the priest is teaching what the Church already officially teaches. The pope s authority to sanctify in the Person of Christ is no different than that of the bishops. This is because Christ made no distinction with Peter from the other Apostles in this authority. However, I say this only in regards the performance of the sacramental ministry of the Church. If the Church goes for a period of time without a pope (and it has in the past), the Church can continue to teach, but it cannot define any teaching with certainty. The Church can continue to govern, but only according to the prescriptions of laws left by the previous pope. However, the necessity to sanctify must remain fully intact because it is so necessary for the life of the Church and the salvation of souls. One may argue that without a pope, bishops cannot be chosen. While it is true the pope must pick or approve of bishops and ordaining a bishop without permission of the pope is grounds for excommunication, the sacrament would be valid if performed by a bishop, even without papal approval. This goes to Church governance, not the authority to sanctify. So then, what is the distinction to be given to the Pope regarding the authority to Sanctify with the Authority of Jesus Christ? The pope has a special role here that also applies to teaching, but in a different way. Regarding teaching, he has an obligation to see that the flock is fed with truth and certainty by confirming the brothers in faith. Regarding sanctifying, he has an obligation to see that the flock is fed with the grace of the sacraments and holy rites of the Church. This authority, of course, belongs to the bishop over his diocese, but the pope must see to this over the whole church. He has been given a specific obligation to do so, when Jesus said to Peter: Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes Lord; you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs (John 21:15). He repeated this three times with St. Peter. In Jesus and Mary,

If you have any questions or plan on attending please call Gina Shea at home , cell or gmshea1236@gmail.com InterGenerate was founded almost 10 years ago with the purpose of teaching people how to grow their own food and also to increase access to healthy food for people who need it. They have gardens in Katonah, Chappaqua, Millwood and Mt. Kisco and are now looking at opening a garden in Armonk. They coordinate a group of volunteers who take turns tending the garden, and then they harvest the food for those in need (the gardeners get to take home some of the fruits of their labor as well). Suzi Novak, a garden educator, leads the group, so gardening experience is not necessary. The model is that volunteers sign up for days and times convenient to them to come to the garden. Not everyone has to be at every work session - they work around people s travel and work schedules, not the other way around! They hope to get volunteers from other faith communities, and would like St. Patrick s to be represented.
