3 ADDRESSING THE ACCUSATIONS OF ARCHBISHOP VIGANO REGARDING POPE FRANCIS (continued) All of this (what I have written in previous columns regarding the Archbishop Vigano s accusations) is predicated on the big IF? I don t know what the truth is. To respectfully ask the Pope, even to demand, that he respond to the accusations and have a credible investigation is not simply permissible, but is a right of the laity, priests, and bishops. The Pope, in fact no pope, not even Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI or even Pope St. John Paul II are above criticism. They all may be at fault regarding Cardinal McCarrick and his continued advancement in the church, even to being appointed Cardinal. The fact that John Paul II was saintly and is now declared a saint does not mean he did not make mistakes, even sinful ones. Our Lord and His mother were without sin in this life. One looks at the whole of one s life, especially at the time of death. I will not make the case for John Paul II. I think his sanctity is obvious and if it is not to you, then too bad for you, as he has been formally declared one. One last point that I think is very important to remember, is that even after Peter denied three times that he knew our Lord and did so with lies and cursing, our Lord reaffirmed Peter in his office as shepherd of His flock. Yes, Peter wept bitterly for his sin and he had to reaffirm 3 times that he loved our Lord (he did so not with a sacrificial love but with a brotherly love philio rather than agape) but we must give Pope Francis the chance. He may very well be innocent of what he is accused of by Archbishop Vigano, or maybe he is in a stage of denial, or maybe something else altogether. If guilty, maybe he will admit it, repent and weep for his sin. Maybe his love for our Lord and His Church is just philio/brotherly love rather than agape/sacrificial love. St. Peter in the end gave his life for Christ with a divine, sacrificial love, maybe Pope Francis will too. Who knows? I see the pope, and yes including Pope Francis, as my father. I love not just the office, but the person who holds that office. I believe respect and honor is due to the Holy Father, to his person, not just his office, because the 4 th Commandment applies: Thou shalt honor thy father and mother. However, even my biological father was not above my criticism and correction, but it must be different than fraternal correction (of brothers). Here we are speaking of paternal (fatherly) correction not the father correcting the son, but the son correcting the father. I tremble at it. It must be done with true love, in truth, in charity, in humility. So I say: O Lord, if I do this with anything but the purest intentions of love, truth, charity, and humility, please have mercy upon me a sinner. Let us pray that the truth will prevail in a spirit of mercy and charity, and whatever that truth may be, God s will be done. Mary, Mother of the Church, St. Joseph, protector and guardian of the Church, and St. Peter, patron of all popes, pray for the Church and Pope Francis. P.S. In my next series I want to explain the nature and role of the papacy according to the Church. Exactly what are our obligations in faith and charity to the papacy and the man who holds that office. This will not be about Pope Francis, but any pope. There are two extreme currents in the Church regarding the Papacy. One current holds that anything the pope teaches must be held with religious submission of faith. Often this current puts the pope on such a pedestal that any criticism of the pope is considered disrespectful. The other current holds that the pope s authority is not by divine institution. Not only can the pope be criticized but his authority can be rejected and undermined. This current also holds that the pope does not have infallible authority to teach either independently or with the union of the bishops, in fact, it denies infallibility to the church. They see the papacy more like the administration of a president. A new president is elected and undoes the work of the previous president. A new pope is elected and he is bound to neither Tradition nor Sacred Scripture, let alone the magisterium (teaching authority) of previous popes. During his papacy, the current teachings of the pope are what the church teaches. Ironically, the two diverse currents come together on this: What ever the pope says or does is what the church says or does. For the first, any change in church teaching is protected by the Holy Spirit and therefore must be believed. For the second, any change in church teaching is church teaching until it too needs to be changed. It is simply the official position of the current administration of the pope. Most often the second position is held by progressives/liberals and will only claim church authority if the teaching agrees with them; anything else is up for grabs. Of course, there are other currents in between these two, but these two seem to get the most attention. I want to refute both and explain what the Authentic Church teaching is in this regard.

This service of magnificent song and moving readings from Holy Scripture is a spiritual oasis in the midst of the busy holiday hubbub, offering time for reflection, meditation, and peace. The emphasis of this Lessons and Carols is on hope, anticipation, expectation, and renewal of the self in preparation for the coming of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Our Festival Choir will lead this service, and a festive reception will follow in Wallace Hall. SAVE THE DATES: No previous experience necessary, but we ask that you at very least enjoy singing with others, commit to rehearsals, and practice with a CD on your own. Rehearsals are usually on p.m. Not every Wednesday, but as we get closer to December 16th, you will be expected to attend some mandatory rehearsals. Life s Transition Support Group A monthly support group, facilitated by Victoria Assumma LCSW-R, ACSW, will be held at the parish on the third Friday of each month starting September 21st from 7-8:30 pm. The goals are to share and support one another through life s challenges. Anyone who is struggling is welcome to attend.
