3 HOW TO RECEIVE AN INDULGENCE FOR THE HOLY YEAR For the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, a Holy Door is opened in every cathedral around the world, as well as in particular shrines. Here in the Archdiocese of New York the designated places to receive the indulgence are: - Saint Patrick s Cathedral (New York City) - Basilica of Saint Patrick s Old Cathedral (New York City) - Saint Frances Cabrini Shrine (New York City) - National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Middletown) - National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians (Stony Point) Even though we can only obtain one plenary indulgence a day, if you perform the required actions for other plenary indulgences on the same day, you can still obtain multiple partial indulgences. (Again, a plenary indulgence is the FULL remission of ALL temporal punishment due to sin while a partial indulgence is a partial remission of temporal punishment due to sin) To receive the Jubilee Year indulgence, you must fulfill the usual conditions, (specified below) and perform the indulgenced act: passing through a designated Holy Door during the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy (between Dec. 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and Nov. 20, 2016, the Solemnity of Christ the King) or performing one of the corporal or spiritual works of mercy: Corporal Spiritual (1) Feed the hungry. (1) Admonish sinners (2) Give drink to the thirsty. (2) Instruct the uninformed. (3) Clothe the naked. (3) Counsel the doubtful. (4) Shelter the homeless. (4) Comfort the sorrowful. (5) Visit those in prison. (5) Be patient with those in error. (6) Comfort the sick. (6) Forgive offenses. (7) Bury the dead. (7) Pray for the living and the dead means of obtaining the Jubilee Indulgence." To receive a plenary indulgence Here are the normal conditions for receiving a plenary indulgence: It is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: ο have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; ο have sacramentally confessed their sins; ο receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); and ο pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. ο It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an Our Father and a Hail Mary are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence. ο For the sake of those legitimately impeded, confessors can commute both the work prescribed and the conditions required (except, obviously, detachment from even venial sin). Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth. As for the sick and the elderly, the Holy Father says, "For them it will be of great help to live their sickness and suffering as an experience of closeness to the Lord who in the mystery of his Passion, death and Resurrection indicates the royal road which gives meaning to pain and loneliness. St. Pats teens and families will be stationed at the figure skating event in Poughkeepsie. This event goes from 9-12:00 and is indoors. We are "social volunteers" which means we will cheer for the athletes and greet them as they come into compete. We will also be able to make signs for them. Mark your Calendar for March 4th *Dynamic Speaker Paul Kim * PAUL J. KIM is coming to St. Pats!!! Attendance is mandatory for Teen Life members. Paul Kim has earned a growing international reputation as a dynamic speaker and musician with a powerful message of faith, hope, and love. The way he presents is a rare gift to witness and has impacted people of all ages throughout the country and abroad over the past decade. Moving his audiences from laughter in one moment, to deep reflection and prayer in another; Paul utilizes his many talents to communicate the Gospel to young people in a way that is engaging, entertaining, and altogether inspiring. He understands too well from his own experience, what it s like to feel bored out of your mind at Mass and to put aside a relationship with Jesus Christ because it seems irrelevant, politically incorrect, or just plain prudish. Connecting with youth and young adults using insightful examples, comedy, powerful messages from Scripture, and heart-moving music, Paul challenges his audiences to see that everyone has a hunger for God in their lives, whether they realize it or not. The world often tries to present a solution to that hunger with money, sex, drugs, popularity, and power; but none of those things can satisfy a person s heart. MARCH MADNESS - March 6th Volunteers Needed for Soup Kitchen Homeless people and struggling families can find shelter, a warm meal and friendly faces in soup kitchens. All volunteers at soup kitchens make a difference in somebody's life. And while you may find yourself short on free time, the rewards of volunteering at a soup kitchen will be worth it. Soup Kitchen Volunteering takes place on Sat. Afternoons between 12-3 (5 kids max) on March 12th and April 9th (7 teens max). Teens must be at least 15 years old to volunteer. The soup kitchen is called the Meatloaf Kitchen and is located in NYC. Please contact teen life asap if your child is interested in participating. Adults interested in bringing a group to a soup kitchen should also contact Teen Life. Teen Rec. Night We are also going to be sending out announcement regarding some Teen Rec. nights and other things so you must regularly check the St. Patrick of Armonk Google Plus Community. So...how do you do that? You must provide a gmail address (students school works!) asap. We will then send you an Invitation to join the google plus community you must "accept invitation". In order to find the invitation, you must have a google account, or gmail account. In your gmail make sure you check "All Mail" and/or "Social" or "Categories" to find your invitation to join. Sometimes it does not show up in the standard Inbox. It is important that you do this asap as we would like to use Google Plus as a means of communicating. AOL, Verizon and others do not work with Google plus. Parents are welcome to join our Google Plus Teen Life Community but you too must provide us with a gmail address..
