3 Theology of the Body (Column 4) Definition of Love continued: Love is the free gift of oneself to an other by which one wills the good of the other for the other s sake. Love is to an OTHER. Love, by its very definition, implies a relationship of persons. While we can speak of proper love of self, this notion gets distorted when taken out of the context of God s revelation. Love of self that is selfishness or self-centeredness is not love. In a pagan world, or in world of atheists, this notion may be thought of as an authentic expression of love (Trust me, in the Me generation, seeking self-fulfillment and identity in satisfying ones desires in a Freudian or hedonistic way has been called true love of self but it is a lie.). Love resides in the WILL. Love is not a desire, it is not an emotion. Nothing affects our desires and emotions more than love does, but they are not love. Now, you might ask or propose: Should we not say love resides in the Heart. By heart we do not mean the physical organ of the heart, but what it stands for: the heart of the person, the soul, the very core of ones being. I would answer yes, but In a person who is living a fully human life in which and by which the whole of their being, of their personhood, is fully and authentically integrated by God s sanctifying grace, then the answer is yes, but for a person who is living in a fallen state from God s sanctifying grace, with the deep wounds of original sin affecting the very core of their being, the heart and will are not integrated and often are at odds with each other. We will explore this more deeply later on. After the fall, freedom remains in the will, the heart is enslaved. Love is a choice. We choose to give of ourselves, sometimes in opposition to the desires of the heart, for the good of another, or we choose not to. If I see my neighbor is starving and I cry and get all emotional, maybe I even give a little something to ease my conscience, but I am able to give real and lasting help and I choose not to, what is the meaning of my tears and emotions nothing. Remember we must love our enemies. My heart and emotions may say to hell with them, but my choice to pray and offer sacrifices for them says save them Lord. Love wills the GOOD. What is our good? What is the good of the other? How do we determine what is good for us or for the other? The most basic criteria that we use to determine what is good for us or others is happiness. If it makes me happy, it must be good. Obviously, we are not so simple as to think that any pleasure, comfort or anything that gives us an immediate sense of happiness is necessarily good. However, in the core of our being we desire and are searching for happiness. If we a truly happy, there is a sense of being satisfied, we need look no further. What affords us of this happiness, we determine to be good. Of course, we can make errors in our judgment, both in that which makes us happy as good, and that the happiness we have obtained is real, lasting and authentic. Regardless of our ability to err in this judgment, true and authentic happiness is our good and we rightly use it as our criteria for judgment. As mentioned, love seeks ones true good, their greatest good, their greatest happiness. If I can make you happy for the day sounds good, but if you will be miserable for the rest of year, maybe not so good. If I can make you happy for the year sounds good, even better than a day, but if it is going to make you miserable for the rest of your life, not so good. If I can make you happy for the rest of your life, sound best of all, but you are going to miserable for the all eternity, not so good. Love seeks the greatest good first of all: Eternal Happiness. As our Lord said, what good is it if we gain the whole world but lose our soul in the process (Cf. Mt 16). Love seeks first the eternal good/happiness of the other and of oneself, then in its proper order temporal good/happiness. In Jesus and Mary,

The regular 8:30, which will be offered for all souls, and a 7:30 PM which will be offered for the souls presented to the altar here at St. Patrick s. Also, at the 7:30 PM Mass the names of those who were buried from our church since September 2015 will be remembered with the lighting of a candle in their memory. The remembrance of those buried from St. Patrick s will be an annual celebration at 7:30 PM on All Souls Day. Since this year is the inaugural year, we begin from September Next year it will be only the names of those who were buried from St. Patrick s since November 1 of All are welcome. Music will be provided to make the mass more solemn. St Patrick s Pasta Night Bible Study: Theology of the Body A study of Pope St. John Paul II s papal teaching on what it means to be male and female, created in the image and likeness of God The eight-part study begins Thursday evening at 7pm, Oct. 5th, 2017 in Wallace Hall. Registration sheets are located at the Church entrances. You can also register online. The fee is $15, due by October 5th. The study will be conducted by Fr. Jeffrey Galens using Christopher West s DVD series: An Introduction to the Theology of the Body.
