3 Decimotercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, Why? This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, Why? At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper. Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. Question of the Week First Reading God did not make death, nor does God rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24). Psalm I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading Your abundance should supply the needs of the others (2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15). Gospel Your faith has saved you (Mark 5:21-43 [21-24, 35b-43]). Question for Children: What does sharing with others bring happiness to you? Question for Adults: What is your personal response to St. Paul s instruction to the Corinthians today? How will this change your personal habits with money and possessions? Readings for the Week Monday: Am 2:6-10, 13-16; Ps 50:16bc-23; Mt 8:18-22 Tuesday: Eph 2:19-22; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Jn 10:24-29 Wednesday: Am 5:14-15, 21-24; Ps 50:7-13, 16bc-17; Mt 8:28-34 or, for Independence Day, any readings from the Mass For the Country or a City, nos , or For Peace and Justice, nos Thursday: Am 7:10-17; Ps 19:8-11; Mt 9:1-8 Friday: Am 8:4-6, 9-12; Ps 119:2, 10, 20, 30, 40, 131; Mt 9:9-13 Saturday: Am 9:11-15; Ps 85:9ab, 10-14; Mt 9:14-17 Sunday: Ez 2:2-5; Ps 123:1-4; 2 Cor 12:7-10; Mk 6:1-6a You changed my mourning into dancing; O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks. 5 Decimotercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 5 Treasures from our Tradition Tradiciones de nuestra Fe As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the Military Vicariate. In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the Archdiocese for Military Services, USA. Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in He was assigned as a schoolmaster, but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti- Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the Nuns of the Battlefield (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. Rev. PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL We have a Perpetual Adoration Chapel (open 24/7). Jesus is waiting for you. Please visit and adore Him. Access is with a digital code, that will be provided by the Parish Office during normal business hours. Stop by the chapel to spend time with the Lord, at any time, any day. Please sign your name on the Sign In book for visitors. FOURTH OF JULY MASS You are invited to begin your Independence Day celebration by joining us, Wednesday, July 4th at our 9:00 a.m. Mass. Please join us after Mass for refreshments and fellowship. * The Parish Office will be closed in observance of the 4th of July Holiday.

Day time hours: Mon.-Sat. 9AM 2 PM Evening hours: Mon. Thurs. 4:30 PM 6:30 PM. Safeguard the Children DID YOU KNOW? Safety trumps good manners As parents/caregivers, we teach children to say please and thank you, to play nicely, and to respect other adults. It is also key to stress the importance of safety, and let children know that it is okay to be impolite if they feel threatened or scared. Children should know that it s okay to say NO if someone is asking them to do something they don t feel comfortable doing, and that setting boundaries by saying things like -- Don t touch me there, or I don t like that -- are not rude, but in fact necessary for their safety. Contact Adrian Flores at aflores@stlinus.org Phone Number: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time What does faith mean to you? The people whose stories we hear in today s Gospel had deep faith, and their faith led them to experience powerful encounters with the healing love of Christ. Like the woman with the hemorrhage and Jairus, whose daughter had died, we ofen turn to God in times of crisis, relying on faith to see us through the darkness. As Saint Paul encouraged the people in Corinth in today s second reading, we are also called to live differently as a result of our Christian faith. Like Jesus, we are to share the love, mercy, healing, and forgiveness of God with others. Layout of the inscription will be interpreted by the engraver. I/ WE WOULD LIKE THE FOLLOWING INSCRIPTION IN RECOGNITION ON MY/OUR: FAITH IS TO BELIEVE Placing our faith and trust in God, whom we cannot see, is not always easy. We wonder why suffering exists and question the meaning of life and our purpose in the world. We wonder if God is really present during the most challenging of life circumstances; we sometimes experience spiritual dryness, in which God seems distant or absent. At times, we may feel strong in faith, until a situation at home or work requires us to act as a person of faith, and suddenly faith is no longer easy, convenient, or comfortable. These moments are so common that we speak of taking a leap of faith, when we act out of faith, even when the result of doing so is uncertain. Such a leap is often a turning point in our lives, as we find strength, healing and peace in turning our burdens and anxieties over to God in trust. Saint Augustine said, Faith is to believe what you do not see. The result of this faith is to see what you believe. TODAY IS AMEN SUNDAY Amen Sunday is an opportunity for us to celebrate and highlight the progress of our Capital Campaign. It also gives us a chance to bring in our pledge and stand in solidarity with our parish and the mission of our campaign. If you would like to bring in your campaign pledge envelopes or your checks towards your commitment it is very welcomed and appreciated. If you have not pledged we also welcome your monetary donations.

10 PAGE 10 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018 THE RESULT OF FAITH As we grow in faith, we come to believe that God is always with us, through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit and the sacramental life of the Church, especially the Eucharist. We are assured of God s presence in quiet moments of prayer and experiences of the kindness, care, and compassion of others. We see what we believe through all of these encounters with Christ s love. These experiences lead us to praise and thank God for our many blessings, and to reach out to others so that, through us, they may also encounter Christ s undying love. Through all of this, we grow in our willingness to share our many gifts with others, especially the faith that makes such a difference in our lives. 11 Decimotercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 11 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Who s More Generous? Does the Christian duty to help the poor seem to be overwhelming? We hear more and more are out of work, more and more are homeless, and we see more and more pictures of starving children. Even in St. Paul s time there was more than enough poverty to go around. He was trying to build interest (in our second reading) in a project to help the Christians in Jerusalem. We see two of his reasons here. First he tells what fine Christians they are, and hopes that they will be just as good in giving to his collection. (Reminds me of letters from the bishop, telling parishioners how good and generous they have been in the past.) But Paul isn t just flattering the Corinthians; he is challenging them to continue to show their love for God in their support for fellow Christians. The second reason was to show a good example: By helping the church in Jerusalem, they would show that Christians were united in faith and love for each other. He also doesn t make a competition out of who could be most generous. He expects them to be more interested in love for each other than in outdoing each other. The main example he uses is Jesus, who made himself poor (i.e., human) so that we could be rich in grace and forgiveness. Paul challenges them, and us, to follow that example in giving from our wealth so that others can survive. Note that he doesn t expect them to live in poverty, just to share what they have out of love for Christ. Perhaps they may need help themselves sometime, and could count on the other church to do the same for them. Today, we can ask ourselves, Do I give to the poor because I feel guilty about all that I have? Or do I want to show my love for Jesus when I see him in the poor? Do I give because I want the parish to look more generous than the neighboring parish, or to show that we are all united in concern for each other? By looking at why we give to charities, we may find ourselves being even more generous than we expected.
