3 THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others. 5 Treasures from our Tradition La Santísima Trinidad PAGE 5 Tradiciones de nuestra Fe One of the great treasures of the Eastern tradition is the icon of the Holy Trinity created by the Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev in the 1400s. The Trinity is symbolized by the three travelers to the tent of Abraham and Sarah. They are seated at a table blessing a cup of wine, under the oak of Mamre. If you look closely, you will see a sacrificed calf in the chalice, reminding the viewer of the cross. The table, prepared for eating and tilted toward the viewer, is an invitation to the Eucharist. From left to right, each figure is keyed to a person of the Trinity. Like all icons, this image is theology in art. The persons are equal in proportion and dignity, they all carry staffs to symbolize their power, and are shown with golden wings and halos. Today, the best place to see Rublev s work is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, at the heart of the vast Holy Trinity monastery about an hour from Moscow. After decades of persecution, it is now once again a living monastery, a world heritage site, and the spiritual home of Russian Orthodoxy. A Google visit is highly recommended today! Esto se hace cada vez que nos persignamos o santiguamos con la señal de la santa cruz. Así mismo, nuestra fe y religión cristiana esta fundamentada en la Santísima Trinidad y cada persona que entra en nuestra familia tiene que pasar por la cruz y la resurrección. La señal de la cruz la trazamos en nuestro cuerpo desde la frente hasta nuestro vientre; del hombro derecho al hombro izquierdo poniendo nuestro corazón casi al centro de este misterio. Muchos latinos terminan la señal poniendo el pulgar sobre el índice en forma de cruz y besándola confirmando el amor que nosotros tenemos por la cruz de Jesús y el hecho que cargamos en nuestros cuerpos el efecto de esa cruz, la reconciliación con Dios. Recordamos con esta señal nuestro bautismo muriendo a una vida de pecado y renaciendo por el Espíritu a una vida nueva en Cristo, para la gloria de Dios Padre. 6 PAGE 6 The Most Holy Trinity May 27, 2018 MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION This year on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 th, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass we will honor and remember those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We will also celebrate the dedication and bravery of the men and women who are PRES- ENTLY serving in the Armed Forces. For those who made the ultimate sacrifice we are blessed and grateful. For those who continue to serve we honor their commitment and service. You are welcome to bring a framed picture of your loved one(s) who died in service to their country or who are currently serving in the military. These pictures will be placed at the foot of the altar during this special mass. After Mass you are invited to stay for some refreshments and fellowship. Three-in-One Love When I was much younger, I used to think that God was totally invisible, not to be experienced as the people in the bible did. After all, they heard God s voice in the fiery cloud; they saw the waters parted so they could pass through all the things that Moses talks about in the first reading. But then I ask myself, do I want my faith to be based on special effects? Do I want to be like the people who believe in extra-terrestrials because they saw a light in the sky that they could not explain? Or do I want to trust Jesus, who told Thomas, Blessed are they who have not seen and have believed. (Jn 20:29) Jesus was referring to his resurrection appearances, but it also applies to the Holy Trinity. When we see a newborn child, she can remind us of God the Father creating the earth and all living things. When we see the cross, we recall Jesus saving death and resurrection. When we share our faith with someone, we know that it is the Holy Spirit who gives us the words to speak and the courage to speak them. Without seeing the pillar of fire that lead the Hebrew from Egyptian slavery, nor the wounds in Jesus hands after his resurrection, nor the tongues of flame over the apostles at Pentecost we can still experience God in Three Persons. The three are not just equal parts of God, one-third of God each. No, they each are totally God. That is why we say God is love: Three infinite Persons are united in one substance or being, so the love they have for each other is infinite. The actions that show each Person s qualities are not done by that person alone. Everything God does is done by all three Persons. So you could say that everything the Trinity does, is done out of love. MONTH OF MARY The month of May is the month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady, and it is the occasion for a moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world pray to the Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God s mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance (Paul VI: Encyclical on the Month of May, no. 1). In our observance of the Marian month we encourage you to do some of the following to celebrate the month of May: Bring fresh flowers to adorn our statue of Mary, Light a candle at Mary s Altar, Pray a Novena to Our Lady, Look up and learn about a new Marian Devotion, Memorize a Marian Prayer, Pray the Rosary, Get and wear a Miraculous Medal (Our Lady promised St. Catherine of Laboure great graces to those who wear this medal), Read a book about Mary Pope Paul VI goes on to say that May is an opportune time to let our petitions fly to Our Lady especially for the needs of the Church and the whole human race that most urgently require our Blessed Mother s intercession. A SPECIAL PRAYER ON M EMORIAL DAY As we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Please hold our servicemen and women in your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and your presence as they stand in the gap for our protection. We also remember the families of our troops. We ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes, and we pray your peace, provision, and strength will fill their lives. May the members of our armed forces be supplied with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters. Next Sunday is Amen Sunday Next weekend, (the first weekend of every month), is Amen Sunday. Amen Sunday is an opportunity for us to celebrate and highlight the progress of our Capital Campaign. It is also gives us a chance to bring in our pledges and stand in solidarity with our parish and the mission of our campaign. 10 PAGE 10 The Most Holy Trinity May 27, 2018 The Most Holy Trinity PROCESSION AND PERICHORESIS Neither the term nor the concept Trinity appears in the New Testament. Our scriptures do name all three persons and describe some sort of unity of relationship among them, but it remained for following centuries to wrestle with this self revelation of God. The term Trinity appeared about two hundred years into Christianity s existence, as it began to gain a hold and there was more time to reflect (and agree or disagree) upon a more precise understanding. One way the church began to understand the relationship of the persons of the Trinity was through the term procession. The three persons of the Trinity live in mutual indwelling with each other, and are revealed to people this way. Thus the Son became known through the procession called filiation and the Spirit through the procession called spiration. Another way the Trinity was understood was through perichoresis (the chor of our choreography is in there), in which the three eternal persons of the Trinity dance together in their divine and holy unity. DANCING AND DWELLING So what? It is easy to ask this question about obscure theological debates that took place centuries ago. But these definitions were born of the struggles of the faithful to understand how the Trinity lived and worked in their lives, and the fruit of their efforts can benefit us today. Each of us was baptized in the name of and into the Holy Trinity. At that time, the Trinity came to dwell in us, and we began to dwell in the Trinity. At the beginning of the twentieth century, St. Elizabeth of the Holy Trinity (d. 1906) went even further and prayed for the Trinity to be buried in her, that she might be buried in the Trinity. Our relationship with the Trinity, then, can be as deep and profound as our humanity will allow. And, just as their manifestation or revelation is how we know them, it is when the grace and life of the Trinity are made known through our witness that others see their holiness proceed into the world. It is when we reflect and share the joyous dance of the three persons that their mystery is once again revealed for the life of others. Safeguard the Children DID YOU KNOW?
