3 SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday s Gospel reading, taken from the conclusion of John s Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that [e] veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God (5:1) what we might refer to as being born again. Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. Question of the Week First Reading The community of believers was of one heart and mind (Acts 4:32-35). Psalm Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118). Second Reading Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God (1 John 5:1-6). Gospel The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace and the Spirit. (John 20:19-31). Question for Children: How can you believe in Jesus whom you have never seen? Question for Adults: What strengthens your faith? Why do you believe in Jesus? Readings for the Week Monday: Is 7:10-14; 8:10; Ps 40:7-11; Heb 10:4-10; Lk 1:26-38 Tuesday: Acts 4:32-37; Ps 93:1-2, 5; Jn 3:7b-15 Wednesday: Acts 5:17-26; Ps 34:2-9; Jn 3:16-21 Thursday: Acts 5:27-33; Ps 34:2, 9, 17-20; Jn 3:31-36 Friday: Acts 5:34-42; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; Jn 6:1-15 Saturday: Acts 6:1-7; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19; Jn 6:16-21 Sunday: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19; Ps 4:2, 4, 7-9; 1 Jn 2:1-5a; Lk 24:35-48 Domingo de la Divina Misericordia Pregunta de la Semana Lecturas de la Semana PAGE 3 Primera lectura La communidad de los creyentes compartía todo con el mismo amor (Hechos 4:32-35). We welcome you to make your weekly/monthly donations by enrolling in WeShare (formerly Parish Pay) by visiting or calling (800) to set up an account. Second Sunday of Easter Our readings this week give us a glimpse of how the first communities of Christians began to understand their purpose and identity. When Jesus appeared to his disciples, he said, Peace be with you, calling his followers to bring his peace and forgiveness to God s beloved world. The early Church realized it was not a group of individuals each seeking to live virtuously and then go to heaven. Instead, Christians formed communities, empowered by the Spirit, attempting to live in profound trust in God and in each other. Remembering how Jesus displayed his wounds to his disciples, the church came to realize that it is called to share in the life of a wounded world. When we, the Church today, demonstrate our faith and love in action, we also show everyone who the crucified Jesus really is the One who knows and accompanies us in our human suffering.

5 Treasures from our Tradition Domingo de la Divina Misericordia PAGE 5 Tradiciones de nuestra Fe Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: Pinky, Boo-boo, and the like. This Sunday was once called Low Sunday, a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or The Lord s Day for Putting Away the Albs, so no wonder the nickname Low Sunday arose. In the old calendar it was also called Quasimodo Sunday, after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or As newborn infants, a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo s bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named Quasimodo for the feast. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. NO THEORY Let your religion so be less of a theory and more of a love affair. G. K. Chesterton THE WOUNDS OF JESUS In the Gospel passage from John, Jesus appears twice to his disciples, and both times Jesus shows them his wounds from his crucifixion. Thomas actually touches the wounds. Jesus wounds did not disappear after the Resurrection. Jesus meant for his followers to know that his sufferings, and ours, are part of our encounter with him. Jesus revealed how God is present in our human suffering, joining us in our most painful moments with consolation and with mercy. Suffering is a great mystery, and we cannot adequately explain or justify the many wounds we experience in life. However, in prayer God can open a way forward. The Holy Spirit might offer wisdom to perceive when or how our sufferings make healing or hope possible for others or for ourselves. When we enter into this mystery we follow Jesus, who radically trusted God to transform his sufferings into new life. A Message from RCIA What was the ceremony celebrated at the Easter Vigil Mass? Last Saturday we welcomed five new members to the St. Linus Catholic community. Stephanie Perez and Santiago Vera were first baptized by Father Tony. They were later joined by Rebecca Alfaro, Ramon Segundo and Celsa Delgado being received into full communion with the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. What is next for those who entered the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil? We have reached the 4th period of the RCIA process, which is the neophyte year. All who were baptized and received into full communion are called neophytes in this period, until the anniversary of their initiation next Easter. The final period of regular weekly formation extends through the Easter season, the seven weeks from Easter to Pentecost. This post-baptismal catechesis is called mystagogy. It is a time for deepening the Christian experience, especially in appreciation for the sacramental life, for spiritual growth, and for entering more fully into the life and unity of the Catholic community. The neophytes now share with Christ, and his Body in the parish community, the intimate communion of the Eucharist. Now they have access to all the means of sanctification. We as a parish community pledge to help them grow and mature in the Christian life and to develop a genuine Catholic world view. Please pray for all those who God has called to join us as we continue on our pilgrimage to our Father in Heaven. Thanks! The RCIA team would like to thank the many members (too many to list) of the Saint Linus community that had a part in the beautiful celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord at the Easter Vigil. We would like to also acknowledge and thank those that prayed for the Elect, Candidates and catechist during this journey. The assistance of Imelda Manalac, Gloria Dacanay, Aida Capistrano and Lisa Espiritu in preparing the church hall, preparing/serving the snacks and drinks for the reception that followed the vigil is also greatly appreciated.

7 Origin of Divine Mercy Sunday, the Divine Mercy image, the Chaplet, and the Novena- Saint Faustina: Mankind s need for the message of Divine Mercy took on dire urgency in the 20th Century, when civilization began to experience an eclipse of the sense of God and, therefore to lose the understanding of the sanctity and inherent dignity of human life. In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary. Bl. John Paul explains: This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, that fact that God is mercy the truth of the merciful Christ. And for this reason, when I was called to the See of Peter, I felt impelled to pass on those experiences of a fellow Pole that deserve a place in the treasury of the universal Church. ~ Pope Saint John Paul II, Memory and Identity (2005) Divine Mercy Sunday: St. Faustina s Diary records 14 occasions when Jesus requested that a Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday) be observed, for example: My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary, no. 699) On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday. The Image: Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in a vision, with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salvation and our sanctification. The Lord requested that Jesus, I trust in You be inscribed under his image. Jesus asked that his image be painted and venerated throughout the world: I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish (Diary, no. 48) and By means of this image I will grant many graces to souls (Diary, no. 742). Domingo de la Divina Misericordia Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8, 2018 PAGE 7 The Chaplet of Divine Mercy: The Chaplet was also given to St. Faustina with this promise: Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you (Diary, no. 1541). Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire that the whole world know My infinite mercy (Diary, no. 687). HOW TO PRAY THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY Use a rosary as a prayer tool. 1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross, 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary and The Apostles Creed Then on the Our Father beads say the following: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. 3. On the 10 Hail Mary beads say the following: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. (Repeat step 2 and 3 for all five decades) Conclude with (three times): Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. The Divine Mercy Novena: Jesus gave St. Faustina nine intentions for which to pray the Chaplet beginning on Good Friday and ending on Holy Saturday. He gave St. Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena, saving for the last day the most difficult intention of all, the lukewarm and indifferent of whom He said: "These souls cause Me more suffering than any others; it was from such souls that My soul felt the most revulsion in the Garden of Olives. It was on their account that I said: 'My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass Me by.' The last hope of salvation for them is to flee to My Mercy." In her diary, St. Faustina wrote that Jesus told her: "On each day of the novena you will bring to My heart a different group of souls and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy... On each day you will beg My Father, on the strength of My passion, for the graces for these souls." The different souls prayed for on each day of the novena are: DAY 1 (Good Friday) - All mankind, especially sinners DAY 2 (Holy Saturday)- The souls of priests and religious DAY 3 (Easter Sunday) - All devout and faithful souls DAY 4 (Easter Monday) - Those who do not believe in Jesus and those who do not yet know Him DAY 5 (Easter Tuesday) - The souls of separated brethren DAY 6 (Easter Wednesday) - The meek and humble souls and the souls of children DAY 7 (Easter Thursday) - The souls who especially venerate and glorify Jesus' mercy DAY 8 (Easter Friday) - The souls who are detained in purgatory; DAY 9 (Easter Saturday) - The souls who have become lukewarm.
