The prophet Elijah asks an impoverished widow, who has almost nothing, to be generous. And she is. The letter to the Hebrews states that Jesus offering of himself is an act of giving so substantial that it does not have to be repeated. In the Gospel a widow gives of her substance, in contrast to the rich who give a lot from their abundance but who have a lot more to give. The first reading hints that these scriptures are not only about giving. They are also about fear. Elijah tells the widow, Do not be afraid to give your all. The depth of generosity that God asks of us is only possible if we let go of our Daniel Sanchez Iris Le Duff Tony & Sally Estoque Patti Garcia Michael Abad Frank Le Duff Gunter Liu, Kathy Carrillo Constantino Camanag Marita Alvarez Tricia Najar Fred Fields Jose Arechiga Roberto Alvarez Margarita Rios Lucille Wendler Marilyn Millare Michael O Donnell Aiden Alonso Virgilio Tandoc Bruce Landry Richard O Donnell George Gonzalez Dominicq Mc Coy Anita Bendo Joe Chavez Sammy Alvarado Gaby Delgado Bryan Licona Helen Rapasky Lupita Delao Ken Cook Glenn & Patricia Hackett SACRAMENTAL INFORMATION Baptism Please stop by the Parish Center to fill out an infant baptism data form or visit our website for more information. 3 TRIGÉSIMO SEGUNDO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus way of service, even if it requires giving one s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:28). QUESTION OF THE WEEK Step One: Listen to the Word What image lingers for you from this reading? What single word or idea struck you in it? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: What part of your own possessions are you called on to share? Question for Youth: When you think of your own life, do you consider yourself to be rich or poor? How do you spend your money? Is there anything you should be doing differently? Question for Adults: When do you know that you have given away enough? 5 11 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 2018 TRIGÉSIMO SEGUNDO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Veterans Day began with the signing of a symbolic treaty between the Allies and Germany ending World War I (then called the Great War ) on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin endures. Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He became a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier s cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or chapel, the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the customary meal for November 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as Saint Martin s Lent or Martinmas, that later developed into the season of Advent. Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc OBITUARY On October 21, 2018, Sister Mairéad Langley aka. GIVE EVERYTHING In First Kings, Elijah meets a widow and immediately makes a request that she promptly fulfills; then he makes another that she resists. His response is not to chastise her lack of charity but instead he says, as Jesus will say repeatedly say in the Gospels, Do not be afraid. He recognizes that it is not lack of charity that prevents her from giving him a little food, it is fear, fear that she will not have enough for her son and herself given their dire straits. Elijah looks beyond the obvious. He asks something of her and then gives back to her, from God s abundance, something even greater. The same is true in Hebrews. Christ offers himself, not as the priest does with a life not his own, but as the genuine Son of God. Again in the Gospel, the substantive generosity of the impoverished widow is contrasted with the apparent generosity of the wealthy. The wealthy are found lacking.

A Lot of Nerve I always thought it took a lot of nerve for Elijah to beg that poor woman for a meal. Even though, during a long drought, she has only a bit of her food to give to her son, he still asks her to make a little cake for himself. It would be easier to understand if we heard the verse before this reading begins: God tells the prophet that he has commanded a widow to feed you. (1Kgs 17:9) Now the widow was not aware of this command. But she does as Elijah asked. That took even more faith than Elijah showed. She was afraid for herself and the boy. But she had enough faith to risk the last of her food to help someone else. She shows us that we are obeying God s commands when we trust him. Most of those commands come not from a vision, but from someone s cry for help. I wonder how many good people have passed up a chance to do God s will because they didn t hear directly from God what to do. When you hear that a tornado destroyed a nearby neighborhood, do you hear God asking you to help? Do you hear God s voice when you read in the bulletin that the food pantry is running low? When a storm knocks out the power on your block, do you think God is asking you to check on the elderly widow next door? And if you do hear God calling in these examples, how do you respond? You can be like the rich people in the gospel and just give your ten percent. Or do you have the Safeguard the Children DID YOU KNOW? Mutual Respect is Key for FriendshipsYour child will make many friends throughout his lifetime. As children grow, their interests change and develop, and they meet many new people along the way. But as children make new friends, mutual respect should be the guiding principle of these relationships. Parents, talk to your children about how they should feel in a friendship true friends care about each other and respect each other s thoughts and feelings and personal boundaries. If your child isn t receiving respect from her friends, she is learning to accept less than she deserves in a relationship. And if she is the one who doesn t give respect to her friends, she is learning emotional power. For more information on teaching your children about true friendships, jvienna@la-archdiocese.org. A GOOD STORY Christianity is the story of beggars who tell other beggars where to find bread. BE NOT AFRAID It is clear that God prefers the widow s generosity because it displays a lack of fear about what will happen if she leaves her life entirely in God s hands. The widow, who lacks material goods, still fears for her welfare and that of her family but both widows, in Mark and in Kings, overcome that fear to place their reliance on God. The wealthy, as we have seen before in the Gospels, have a lot more to give away before they would need to put their reliance entirely on God. Many cannot find the strength and courage to do so. They give big gifts to the temple thinking this will bring them favor, as it does in the world. But God asks more of us than the world does. God asks that we live our lives as if they depended entirely on God and not our own accomplishments. Because
