3 El Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo (Corpus Christi) PRECIOUS BLOOD On this solemnity we focus our attention on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacrifice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet. Question of the Week First Reading This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you (Exodus 24:3-8). Psalm I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the name of the Lord (Psalm 116). Second Reading Christ is the mediator of a new covenant (Hebrews 9:11-15). Gospel This is my body. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a troubled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimathea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great basilica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Belgium today. The bishop carries the relic through the narrow streets, and the people wear medieval costumes and act out scenes from the Bible. Esto se hace cada vez que nos persignamos o santiguamos con la señal de la santa cruz. Así mismo, nuestra fe y religión cristiana esta fundamentada en la Santísima Trinidad y cada persona que entra en nuestra familia tiene que pasar por la cruz y la resurrección. La señal de la cruz la trazamos en nuestro cuerpo desde la frente hasta nuestro vientre; del hombro derecho al hombro izquierdo poniendo nuestro corazón casi al centro de este misterio. Muchos latinos terminan la señal poniendo el pulgar sobre el índice en forma de cruz y besándola confirmando el amor que nosotros tenemos por la cruz de Jesús y el hecho que cargamos en nuestros cuerpos el efecto de esa cruz, la reconciliación con Dios. Recordamos con esta señal nuestro bautismo muriendo a una vida de pecado y renaciendo por el Espíritu a una vida nueva en Cristo, para la gloria de Dios Padre. Bill Adams was ordained a Redemptionist priest in 1963 and is a resident priest at St. Mary s Catholic Church in Whittier, CA. Fr. Bill has worked in varied ministries, including as a parish priest, retreat director and a parish missionary. He is very active in the Charismatic

6 PAGE 6 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Father Matthew Wheeler Father s Day Blessing Father Matthew Wheeler was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Los Angeles on Saturday, June 2, Father Matthew Wheeler, has been preparing for the priesthood at St. John s Seminary, Camarillo, CA. In 2015, he served as a Seminarian Intern, at St. Linus Catholic Church and was mentored by Fr. Tony Gomez. In 2017, Fr. Matt was ordained a Transitional Deacon at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. On Sunday, June 10, 2017, Fr. Matt will celebrate his 1st Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Linus at 10:30 AM. Please join us as we celebrate communion with him. A reception will follow in the hall. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Today, we are careful never to come into contact with blood unless protected by gloves, masks, and goggles. In the reading from Exodus, however, Moses dramatically splashes blood all over the altar and the people assembled for worship. Blood is the sign of God s covenant with the Israelites, a powerful bond between Creator and creature. Sprinkling blood on God s people connects them with the life force of the Lord. The reading from Hebrews shows how God remains faithful to the ancient covenant of blood, perfecting it in the bloody death of Jesus. Mercifully, Jesus sacrifice on the cross put an end to the bloodshed. Our Eucharistic celebration is an unbloody sacrifice. As we participate in the liturgy, we share in the new covenant Jesus gives us, recorded in our reading from Mark s Gospel: Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. AS REAL AS IT GETS The new covenant described in Hebrews is every bit as real as the dramatic blood-splashed covenant of Exodus. Jesus transformed the covenantal experience for us, putting an end to bloody animal sacrifices. The author of Hebrews explains: he entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. Jesus died, once for all, offering his own blood in atonement for our sins. On the last night of his life, Jesus commanded us to offer bread and wine which he transforms into his own Body and Blood in remembrance of his perfect sacrifice. Although pouring wine from a bottle is in a different category from killing a bull and sprinkling its blood, we must never forget that the wine we offer truly becomes the actual Blood of Christ. As a spiritual gift to your father this Father s Day, why not add his name to the Father s Day Novena? Arrange to have him remembered in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for nine days. May all the joy and happiness of Father s Day be yours! Safeguard the Children DID YOU KNOW? Know the signs of abuse and talk to your children about them Some signs of abuse are too obvious to hide. Unexplained bruises and injuries may indicate abuse at home, and children who are close to a victim may notice these injuries more quickly than an adult, because they spend more time together. Children also share secrets with each other, and if a child is being abused, he/she may be more comfortable confiding in a close friend than an adult. It is important to talk to children about the signs of abuse, and encourage them to talk to you. With the same affirmation from our beloved Pastor, Rev. Fr. Tony Gomez, who sadly is counting the remaining days he has with us as he prepares for his new assignment at St. Philip the Apostle Church in Pasadena. This event will be the last project we will have with him, who has served St. Linus Church for 14 years, and we salute him. In order not to miss anyone in my acknowledgment, allow me to state in general (you know who you are) the contribution of the Parish, school leaders, Parish staff, the ministry and different group leaders! As our reading from Hebrews tells us, Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come to be. In his death, Jesus served as both the priest and the victim, once for all. Jesus died for us. For all of us. He knows us each by name and raises us all to undivided, unprejudiced dignity. In doing this, Jesus makes us part of a royal priesthood. Under the new covenant, we are baptized into the common priesthood of Jesus and invited to make a sacrifice of our very selves. God still calls ordained priests to offer the sacrifice of Jesus Body and Blood every day on our altars. This is a great gift, and the focus of our solemn feast today. Our common baptismal priesthood also reminds us that each one of us participates in the great sacrifice of Jesus when we offer our love and deeds on the altar of our hearts.
