3 LA SAGRADA FAMILIA DE JESÚS, MARÍA, Y JOSÉ HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always get it right, but they always tried to. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. He found his vocation to do his Father s work but he also returned home with his parents. QUESTION OF THE WEEK Step One: Listen to the Word As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: Why is it important to obey our parents? Why is it important to obey God? Question for Youth: Jesus was obedient to his parents, even though he was the Son of God. Why is obedience so important? Is it something you struggle with? Question for Adults: How are you, too, called to our Father s house? 4 DECEMBER 30, 2018 THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH PAGE 4 CALENDAR, MASS INTENTIONS & READINGS The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Christmas celebrates the Incarnation, the en-fleshment of God as a human person. In Jesus, God is bodily present in the human story. Today we honor the Holy Family, helping us to see that God is active in daily family life. God is near at hand, amidst the tensions, joys, and uncertainties of family life. As our Gospel passage describes, even with family miscommunications and with limited understanding of Jesus mission, the Holy Family persevered in their life together. Like many family conflicts, there was no immediate or clear resolution of the issues raised by Jesus and by Mary. God s intentions for the family, and for Jesus, were still unfolding. They continued to stay connected with each other and with God. Within the turbulence of family life, they trusted God to actively sustain and guide them into an uncertain future. We are invited to follow their example. PARISH NEWS 2019 PARISH CALENDARS Please visit the Parish Office for your 2019 calendar. One per family will be issued. 5 30 DE DICIEMBRE DE 2018 LA SAGRADA FAMILIA DE JESÚS, MARÍA, Y JOSÉ TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient pagan Rome, these days in mid-december were a time for general slacking off at work and far too much rejoicing. The period of leisure after the harvest and a whole cluster of pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church council at Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to December 23, exactly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on. Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift giving, of hospitality in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a penitential season like Lent, it is a time for making room in our lives for what matters most. HANNAH AND MARY The story of Hannah and her son Samuel in today s reading from 1 Samuel was especially important for Luke s Gospel. The passage describes the presentation of young Samuel to the priest Eli as part of the story of the faith of Hannah. Hannah had been in great suffering, as she had long desired to have a son, and saw this as central to her vocation and identity. Hannah s deep honesty with God during her distress, together with her confident persistence in prayer, reveals her as a model of faith. Luke links Hannah to Mary through the Magnificat song in Luke 1, which mirrors Hannah s joyous song in 1 Samuel 2. Luke links young Samuel to Jesus, through the presentation in the Temple in Luke 2. Luke is suggesting that God is up to something big. Just as Samuel initiated a turning point in Israel s history, Jesus is about to open a new chapter in human history. Their stories are rooted in the remarkable faith of their mothers, Hannah and Mary. WEAVING THE STORY Today s passage from Luke is the only story about Jesus in the Gospels that occurs between Jesus infancy and his adult ministry. Luke uses the story to weave these elements together. This story, like all the infancy passages, emphasizes that Jesus was born Son of God. Jesus first spoken words in Luke conclude with I must be in my Father s house. God is his Father, and Jesus speaks as God s Son. Luke connects the future ministry of Jesus with the scene at the temple with the teachers. Jesus listeners are astounded at his wisdom. This anticipates similar scenes as an adult. Luke also subtly hints at Jesus resurrection, with details such as the question why were you looking for me? similar to why do you seek the living one among the dead? Luke invites us to see his Gospel as an integrated whole, weaving together Jesus birth, life, death, and resurrection.

We are all God s children, and we all need protection While a major part of preventing sexual abuse and exploitation is aimed at keeping young children safe, the focus and goal of the Protecting God s Children program is to keep all people safe, including adults. By knowing the warning signs of different types of abuse and taking action to shut down abuse and offer protection and support, we can help the most vulnerable among us, whoever they may be. For a copy of the complete VIR- TUS article, Don t Forget to Protect the Vulnerable Adults in Your Community, visit protecting/pages/virtus-current-online-articles.aspx. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph We Are Family On the feast of the Holy Family, it is tempting to compare our own families to the family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Luke s narrative of the twelve year old Jesus in the temple is not a warning for parents to watch their children closely while travelling. The story looks forward to the time Jesus would be lost in the tomb after his crucifixion. Just as his parents found him on the third day, so Jesus would rise from the dead on the third day. And Jesus remark, I must be in my Father s house (Lk 2:49) gives us a hint at who is Jesus family. Luke was well aware that the Temple was considered God s dwelling place. So to call it his Father s house showed that Jesus was the Son of God. Like Jesus, we call God our father, and like Jesus, we are part of a larger family than the one we live with. But remember Jesus was 12 in this part of the gospel. So his duty to God included being obedient to his parents. We too have a tension between obedience to our parents and following God s call, a tension between taking care of our children and giving time to God s children in the church and the community. Let us ask God to help us appreciate what our family obligations really are.
