3 Vigésimo Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario LISTENING AND RESPONDING There are three interwoven themes in today s readings: listening to God, faith vs. good works, and losing our life in order to find it. How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don t always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God s promptings will lead us in the right way. Question of the Week First Reading The Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong? (Isaiah 50:5-9a). Psalm I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116). 5 Vigésimo Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 5 Treasures from our Tradition TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE In this country, we don t name our churches The Fourth Avenue Catholic Church, but rather seek a patron saint or mystery of faith. We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn t take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called Adam and Eve after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of Midvalley City comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. Creo que sería bueno reflexionar también sobre lo que es la Tradición y lo que son las tradiciones. En muchas ocasiones durante mi formación religiosa mis maestros me advertían de no confundir la Tradición en mayúscula con la tradición en minúscula. Cuál es la diferencia?, preguntaba. Y de seguro algunos de ustedes se lo estarán preguntando también. Según el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica (CIC 75 83) los Apóstoles transmitieron el Evangelio de Jesucristo de manera escrita y de manera oral. El Evangelio escrito nos ha llegado en forma del Nuevo Testamento, en especial por los cuatro evangelios. El Evangelio oral nos ha llegado por lo que llamamos la Tradición; ésta nos llega por la predicación, la vida y el ejemplo de los Apóstoles. De esta Tradición o Evangelio oral nacen tradiciones teológicas, disciplinares, litúrgicas o devocionales para diversas escuelas espirituales o grupos étnicos y nacionales. Estas tradiciones necesitan medirse con la gran Tradición evangélica y sólo aquellas que animan a los fieles a vivir más de cerca el Evangelio deben ser promovidas. Steephen Viblanc, OSM Monday, Sept. 17, :30 pm Fr. Steephen was born in India to a prayerful family. Immediately after his high school education, he entered the Servite Order or the Order of Friar Servants of Mary in 1997 and was ordained on April 22, 2009 also for that community. He was then appointed as a Vocation Director as well as both as an Associate Pastor and Pastor for a Servite parish while still in India. His community subsequently assigned him in California on July 2014 and was assigned at Divine Savior Catholic Church in Los Angeles for a period of six months. He was later assigned to Servite High School, an all-male Roman Catholic College preparatory high school located in Anaheim as a Chaplain and Spiritual Director for the school. His main function is counseling the students and saying the everyday mass at the school, confession and retreats complementing the formation of each student to the person of Christ, drawing them to embrace Christ, love Christ, imitate, live and be Christ to others. Fr. Steephen is also helping out nearby parishes like St. Paul of the Cross, St. Philip's at Fullerton and St. Linus Church. He helps the Cursillo Movement in Anaheim for their weekly Wednesday masses.

Archbishop Gomez Urges Prayers for Victims and New Efforts to Purify the Church The recent reports regarding abuse in the Church serve as a reminder of the importance of continuing our efforts to be diligent in the prevention of abuse in our Church and in society. Our prayers and support are with victimsurvivors, their families and all impacted by this evil. Archbishop José H. Gomez urges prayers for abuse victims and new efforts to purify the Church: We are aware that this is a sad and confusing time for the Church in this country. In recent days and weeks, we have heard new revelations about sin and abuse in the Church. This is a time now for prayer and repentance and a time for examining our conscience, especially for those of us who are bishops and priests. And all of us need to pray for every person who has been hurt by the Church, and we need to work to help them heal. Let us ask the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, the Mother of the Church. May she help us to have the courage we need to purify the Church and renew our love for holiness and our devotion to Jesus Christ and his Gospel. Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.
