3 TRIGÉSIMO PRIMER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO GOD S LAWS God s laws are not intended to burden or torment us. Instead they are guideposts that point us in the direction of good living. Accordingly, good living requires loving God and loving one another. We should not follow God s laws out of fear of what might happen if we don t, but rather view them as a foundation for building relationships and trust with one another and with God. The Shema prayer of Orthodox Jews is based on the reading from Deuteronomy today, Hear, O Israel. Every morning people recite the prayer as a profession of their love for God and pledge their obedience to God throughout the day. They pass on their love of God to their children, from one generation to the next. QUESTION OF THE WEEK Step One: Listen to the Word As you listen to this familiar Scripture, what caught your ear in it today? What one word did you notice? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: How often do you put God first in your life? Do you think you can love others as much as you love yourself? Question for Youth: What do you think Jesus meant when he said to the scribe, You are not far from the reign of God? Question for Adults: When you heard the Greatest and New Commandments, which one should you improve on in your own life? WEEKLY COLLECTIONS MASS COLLECTION OCTOBER 27/28 5:30 PM VIGIL $1, :30 AM $1, :00 AM $1, :30 AM $2, PREGUNTA DE LA SEMANA Primera lectura Guarden los mandamientos y normas del Señor. 5 4 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 2018 TRIGÉSIMO PRIMER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Just two years ago, we engaged in one of the core activities of our democratic system: a presidential election. Actually, the institution of election can be traced to traditions in the Church, and although bishops are no longer chosen in this way, abbots and abbesses (heads of monastic communities) have almost always been elected by full voting members of their communities. The lifetime appointment begins when the monks or nuns are gathered in chapter at the death or resignation of the abbot, and fortunately for all involved, campaigning is not allowed! The members of the community discern, with prayer to the Holy Spirit, who among them is the best suited for leadership. Once chosen, the new leader requests the blessing of the local bishop, who usually presides at a ceremony of consecration or investiture. The ballots are always secret, and a simple majority must be achieved. In our American system the Electoral College is the determining voice in the presidential election, not the popular election on a November Tuesday, just as the monastic chapter is the electorate. Today, most religious orders elect general superiors in chapter by delegates of the professed members, and usually for a term of six years. A few, like the Jesuits, elect for life. At least we don t have that weight on our shoulders when we choose a president. Four years at a time will do! PRAY FOR THE DEAD Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and offer our prayers for them. St. John Chrysostom HEALING MASS Fr. Steephen Viblanc, OSM Monday, Nov 19, 2018 At 7:30 pm All My Love According to Jesus, the first (most important) commandment is to love God with heart, mind, soul, and strength. This is usually taken to mean loving God with your whole being. But it wouldn t hurt to look at the modern meanings of those words to see how we can apply them. The heart is the one organ that all others depend on to keep living. It is also a symbol of our desires and love. So to love God with all your heart can mean that you recognize God as the one source of your life. Now, that is easy to say as a philosophical concept. But it also means that you love God above everything and everyone. How many of us can say we would rather spend time with God than with our friends, family, or loved ones? To love God with all your mind can mean that you never stop thinking of God. That is not as difficult as it sounds. You can ask God to help you any time you make a decision, whether it is what to watch next on TV, or what to do for a living. Loving God with your mind can also mean knowing God. The better you know God, the more likely you are to hear God in your decisions. You can get to know God through the scriptures and other spiritual reading. Hearing God may require you to consider the next way to love: with your soul. If the soul is the center of your spiritual life, then loving God with all your soul can remind you to listen to God when you pray. If prayer is a conversation with God, you might remember how annoying it can be to converse with someone who does all the talking. At first it is easy, but eventually you find yourself getting nervous because you have things you would like to say also. Think of that when you pray; give God a chance to put in a few words, too. Finally, to love God with all your strength can mean you put as much energy into loving God as you do with exercising, doing your day-job, cleaning the house, or mowing the lawn. Fortunately, none of those activities has to replace loving God, for you can do each of them as if you were working for the Lord. Just remember that no matter how hard you work for the Lord, God loves you even more than you love Him.

Be a Trusted Resource if a Child Discloses Abuse Parents are in a unique position to know about not only their own children, but their children s friends. If you are a trusted parent, your child s friend may come to you with secrets. What do you do if a child tells you about abuse? As an adult, it s critical that you remain calm, and don t overreact. Child victims are often frightened and confused, and your confusion and anger does not help their situation.your concern and support, however, will affirm the child in important ways and can help begin the healing process for a child victim who has suffered at the hands of a predator. To learn more about steps to take if a child tells you about abuse, jvienna@laarchdiocese.org. Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s readings try to answer the question, What must I do to be successful? The readings begin with just one commandment: Love the Lord with all your heart, all your soul, and with all your strength. The psalm extolls God s strength and protection, giving us lots of reasons to love God. The Letter to the Hebrews once again contrasts the perfection of Christ as priest with the weakness of the other priests. Mark reminds us of the first commandment and adds a second element to it. We must not only love God but we must love our neighbor as ourselves. Mark does not provide a lot of details, just the simple understanding that to love God with your whole self and your neighbor as yourself is worth more than any other sacrifice.

Spots are limited and are first come, first serve. This session will be conducted in English Notes: This session is only for members of St. Linus Church. All Participants in Protecting God's Children and Keeping the Promise Alive Must be 18 or Older/No Minors even with Parents. SECRET OF SUCCESS The readings are fairly simple and straightforward. Do just these two things love God with your whole self and love your neighbor as yourself and you will be saved. Deuteronomy and the psalm emphasize the importance of loving God with our whole selves. Hebrews reminds us that Jesus loved us as he loved his Father and so he offered himself for our sins. Mark says that loving God completely must also be accompanied by loving our neighbor. Jesus loved his Father with his whole soul, his whole mind, his whole strength. The love between God and Jesus makes them one. Everything hinges on the completeness and the inclusiveness of that love. LOVE We all love rules to measure our actions and assure us that we have done enough. Today we are given two rules that offer us none of that. These rules require us to focus only on love: love of God and love of neighbor. There are not seven or ten. There are just two. You must love God but you must do it with your entire being. Everything you are must be focused on and reflect loving God. And then you must love your neighbor. The first is key to the second. Unless we understand how God loves both the lovable as well as the unlovable, we will never be able to love ourselves or any other creature or creation as God loves them all. The Gospels remind us that Jesus sought the broken, the marginalized, the unwanted to teach us how God loves. If everything about you is about loving a God who created and redeemed you, then you love as God loves. If you love as God loves, you recognize the weakness in yourself and in the world yet you still love that broken self and broken world as its Creator does. That is the only measure of success that matters.
