3 THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural and not coincidental that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the Bread of Life discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! Question of the Week First Reading Wisdom has built her house; she has dressed her meat, mixed her wine, yes, she has spread her table (Proverbs 9:1-6). Psalm Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading Be filled with the Spirit, giving thanks always and for everything (Ephesians 5:15-20). Gospel I am the living bread that came down from heaven (John 6:51-58). Question for Children: How does receiving communion help you grow in your faith? How does it help you love others? Question for Adults: How does your faith in Jesus nourish your own life? How does the Eucharist nourish you? In the summer of 1834, popular sentiment against the presence of the Ursuline nuns near Boston reached a boiling point. An influx of Irish laborers had an impact on the work force in the city, and a deep-seated resentment against Catholics fueled the fire. The nuns supported themselves with a school, and most of the young women students were drawn from patrician Protestant families. Nevertheless, rumors fed by the saga of an unhappy junior sister and a later episode of a senior sister fleeing the place increased tensions. The city s selectmen were given a tour by the disgruntled sister, who by then had returned, and found all things in good order. That didn t please the mob, and the mother superior didn t help matters when she said that the bishop had platoons of Irishmen at hand, twenty thousand strong, to do marauders harm. By August 11, the convent had been invaded, ransacked, and burned to the ground. The nuns fled to Maine and Canada. The diocese attempted to recover losses, but the commonwealth offered only ten thousand dollars, which was rejected. Years later, a legislative bill for the state to rebuild the convent and school was roundly defeated. Yet the enterprise of Catholic education had great resilience, and in 1946, more than a hundred years after the riots, the Ursulines returned to Boston to re -establish an academy that endures to the present day. BAPTISMS W E WELCOME TO O UR PARISH COMMUNITY Roman Fidel Aguilar Athena Grace Fernandez Delilah Rincon Thomas Gregory Vizcarra BAPTIZED ON A UGUST 11, 2018 Y OUR PRAYERS ARE REQUESTED FOR THE E TERNAL REPOSE OF: Socorro Parra Garcia Edna Contreras Prayerful and deepest sympathy go out to their families, relatives and friends Entre los varios santitos que de niño recuerdo haber visto en el templo, santa Rosa de Lima ( ) se me ha quedado grabada por su belleza y humildad. Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Wisdom is a quality that appears to be sorely lacking in our society today. Sometimes it seems that our leaders are promoting action after action that is the exact opposite of wise or good. How can our faith survive when so much around us seems to be pulling in the opposite direction? Our readings today encourage us to seek wisdom and learn how to apply it in our own lives and in the world around us. Wisdom (in the first reading) says, Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding. Our second reading urges that we do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord. Jesus teaches that the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. For the sake of the life of our world, we must be willing to grow into wisdom. Religious Education News Vigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 7 TASTE AND SEE Wisdom is often identified with Christ and with the Holy Spirit. Both are present in today s readings, one as a metaphor, the other as a doctrine. To the one who lacks understanding, [Wisdom] says, Come, eat of my food, and drink of the wine I have mixed! She urges us, Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding. Jesus urges us to be united with him in an intimate way in his flesh and blood in the Eucharist. We are blessed with the quality of wisdom, if only we recognize this and welcome our Lord into our hearts. In order to keep our church clean, beautiful, and inviting, please refrain from bringing food or drinks into the Church. This includes chewing gum during mass. Thank you. Gender divides in childhood can perpetuate abusive behaviors Parents of young children have likely heard the phrase boys will be boys many times usually to excuse so-called typical boy behaviors. But this rationalization can extend dangerously through adulthood, to excuse sexual assault and harassment. The messages received by young children have lasting effects. Boys hear that they need to hide their emotions, so if they are abused, they re less likely to come forward. Girls hear that boys can be rough or rude, and learn to tolerate rather than push back. Eliminating this gender divide early may help combat sexual abuse and assault. 10 PAGE 10 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 19, 2018 WELCOME ME AND LIVE How can this man give us his flesh to eat? In those days, before our understanding of the Eucharist, before the Last Supper when Jesus offered himself to his disciples in the bread and wine, this may have been a reasonable theological question, as well as a logical one. They did not understand. They did not have the wisdom to see the metaphor, or to know that further understanding would be forthcoming. But to those who were open to Jesus words, the bread of life was offered and accepted as the way to life eternal. They may not have understood that Jesus was speaking of eternal life, not our physical life on Earth, that would be given forever, but they were captivated by the metaphor and believed. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life. It is possible to be puzzled and still believe. So what does this mean for us today? Wisdom is something we sorely need in our world, and it is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Partaking of the Body and Blood of the Lord is to gain wisdom as well as eternal life, to participate in the life of God, the Trinity, and of each other in love and caring. We must abandon our foolish ways and believe. THE GIFT OF GRACE The gift of grace increases as the struggles increase. Santa Rosa de Lima YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT The effect of receiving the body and blood of Christ is to change us into what we receive. 11 Vigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 11 Wise Fools When we were in high school, we learned that the word sophomore came from Greek words meaning wise fools. The idea was that the second year student thinks he knows it all now, but still has a lot to learn. The first two readings describe wisdom versus foolishness. In Proverbs, Wisdom is a woman who invites us to her banquet, telling us to forsake foolishness. St. Paul invites us to give up our ignorance and to know the will of the Lord, by filling ourselves with the Spirit. Jesus says he himself is the way to understanding God s will; he gives himself as food and drink for eternal life. So how will we accept these invitations to partake of the Wisdom of God? One way is to read the scriptures every day, even for only minutes. Take time to think and pray about what you read. Don t do all the talking; let God have his chance to be heard. Read short passages and the footnotes they can explain some of the obscure references. The gospels are especially good food because of all the examples Jesus gave in his sermons and parables. Listen to the readings and homily at Mass. The Pastor may have some insights that make you think. Receive communion often to be fed with the living Bread. The Church has always taught that we are fed with both the word and the Eucharist. An athlete grows in strength by eating well, but he also has to exercise to tone and strengthen his muscles. If we want to grow in God s wisdom, we have to exercise our faith. If you have a friend or relative who is a good example of faith, talk with that person about how you experience God or your lack of experiences. They may help you see God in ways that never occurred to you. You could offer to be a sponsor for someone in the RCIA, and help someone else s faith to grow. Your parish or diocese may also have on-line resources or discussions. God never forces himself on anyone. To grow in his Wisdom, we have to accept it. Ask him for real food and you won t be disappointed. But be patient, God only gives what we are ready to receive.
