3 Decimonoveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the Bread of Life discourse from John s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life a marvelous promise, but this reward is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Question of the Week First Reading Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water (1 Kings 19:4-8). Psalm Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love (Ephesians 4:30 5:2). Gospel Jesus said, I am the living bread; whoever eats this bread will live forever (John 6:41-51). Question for Children: Name one way that your faith nourishes you? How does it help your life? Question for Adults: What nourishes your life? What does the phrase living bread mean for you? Readings for the Week Monday: Ez 1:2-5, 24-28c; Ps 148:1-2, 11-14; Mt 17:22-27 Tuesday: Ez 2:8 3:4; Ps 119:14, 24, 72, 103, 111, 131; Mt 18:1-5, 10, Wednesday: Vigil: 1 Chr 15:3-4, 15-16; 16:1-2; Ps 132:6-7, 9-10, 13-14; 1 Cor 15:54b-57; Lk 11:27-28 Day: Rv 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab; Ps 45:10-12, 16; 1 Cor 15:20-27; Lk 1:39-56 Thursday: Ez 12:1-12; Ps 78:56-59, 61-62: Mt 18:21 19:1 Friday: Ez 16:1-15, 60, 63 or 16:59-63; Is 12:2-3, 4bcd-6; Mt 19:3-12 Saturday: Ez 18:1-10, 13b, 30-32; Ps 51:12-15, 18-19; Mt 19:13-15 Sunday: Prv 9:1-6; Ps 34:2-7; Eph 5:15-20; Jn 6:51-58 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever. 5 Decimonoveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 5 Treasures from our Tradition Tradiciones de nuestra Fe Careful readers of the Treasures will have noticed that the two columns about the oldest monastic communities in the United States refer to the colonial states. The Louisiana Purchase gained a great treasure for our nation, the Ursuline monastery of New Orleans. Among the greatest pioneers of that city were nuns who came from France on a perilous voyage in 1727, pestered by pirates and tossed by fearsome storms. These were genteel, welleducated Ursulines, yet their first task was to roll up their sleeves and open a hospital to care for the pestilenceridden colony. Next, they opened a school for girls and launched a plan to educate the women being shipped over from France to marry settlers. In this way, they had enormous influence in molding patterns of family and domestic life. At Christmastime in 1814, the threat of a British assault on the city was growing. On the terrifying night of January 7, 1815, the women of New Orleans gathered in the monastery chapel to pray that the city be spared from destruction in battle. The mother superior made a vow to have a Mass of Thanksgiving on that date every year should the Americans win. That night, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to whom the nuns had great devotion, became the protector and patron of this great city. The convent in the French Quarter is the oldest standing building in the Mississippi valley, and the only surviving building of the French colonial period. The nuns relocated in 1824, but their old monastery is preserved as a museum and archives for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The school the nuns began, Ursuline Academy, is the oldest continuously operating Catholic school, and school for women, in the United States. Rev. St. John Climacus Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Like Elijah, don t we often get weary? We get weary for many reasons, even weary of doing good and believing all that Christ has taught. Sometimes, we forget (or fail to believe) that there are angels who constantly serve the Lord and protect us from all evil. They are mentioned in scripture, as in today s first reading, and several times in the Gospels. When an angel comes from God and wakes Elijah and tells him to eat and drink the food that God has provided, he obeys immediately and sleeps again. Again the angel awakens him and bids him eat and drink. And strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb. This is quite a feat to walk for forty days on one meal. But it is symbolic of our strengthening by the Eucharist to face all that we must in our day-to-day living. Sometimes we seem to be walking forever, exhausted and discouraged, but conscious of the strength that comes from the Eucharist we walk with faith and courage, facing whatever difficulties we encounter along the way.

Send your articles via two weeks before you need the article in the bulletin; the address is bulletin@stlinus.org. FORGIVENESS These days, we find ourselves in a bitterly divided nation and a divided Church. We may see ourselves as both right and righteous, but we need to take a closer look at both ourselves and others before we make judgments. It is certainly possible that we are right and the other side quite wrong, but we must be aware, with humility, that we may be the ones who are wrong about many things. Even if we are in the right, Saint Paul reminds us that All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. To be right is of no consequence if we are constantly condemning and ridiculing our opponents in the world and in the Church. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ, says Saint Paul. So do not grieve the Holy Spirit. In order to keep our church clean, beautiful, and inviting, please refrain from bringing food or drinks into the Church. This includes chewing gum during mass. Thank you.

Anyone interested in teaching Religious Ed may attend. Please contact the Religious Ed Office at (562) FOOD OF LIFE Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God. Jesus speaks of himself as the bread of life. He teaches that those who come to him are called by God, and that he himself is the only one who has seen God; if we believe, we will be raised on the last day. If we think we are right only because we believe we are right, based on our own knowledge, we kid ourselves. If we believe we are right because we follow the writings of others who boast of their knowledge of God but do not show it in kindness and love for others, we are fools. If we condemn others because they do not believe as we do, we condemn ourselves for not following the humble and gentle Jesus. We must be kind, and always remember that They shall all be taught by God. Judge not, for as Jesus tells us, I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever... whoever believes has eternal life.

11 Decimonoveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 11 Chicken or Egg The second reading of Paul to the Ephesians talks about forgiving one another. It reminds me of the line in the Lord s Prayer, Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. (Mt 6:12) You could read that line as a warning that God only forgives those who forgive others. Paul reverses that conditional meaning to say that we forgive because God has already forgiven us. So which came first, the chicken or the egg? In a sense, both are needed: Jesus died on the cross to show that God forgives sins you haven t even committed yet. But God does not force his forgiveness on us. It is a gift, given freely. We have to want to be forgiven and accept that gift from God. And we also have to be willing to forgive those who have hurt us. There are many ways to do that. One is to forgive in your heart. That s usually easy to do for someone you love. You know they didn t mean to hurt you and so you don t get angry at them. And if you truly forgive, you won t be thinking of how that person owes you for the hurt and what you can get from them. If you don t love the one who hurt you, you still need to forgive, so you can let go of the hurt. (And be forgiven for not loving your neighbor!) Paul also tells us to let go of bitterness, anger, and shouting. Instead of getting even, we are told to be kind and compassionate (Eph 4:32.) We can go to the next step after forgiving in our hearts: We show our forgiveness in our actions. A friend or relative might get a hug; others might get a handshake or words of forgiveness. If the one who hurt you insists on making up for it, accept their gift graciously and remind them that they are forgiven; they may need to make reparation so they can forgive themselves. Jesus showed how much God wants to forgive us by his death on the cross. Because we are forgiven, we are then able to forgive others. So while God s love and forgiveness are always first, we must be able to forgive others so that we can accept it from God. Tom Schmidt, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
