2 CENTENNIEL 2014 This month, I have been listening, and praying, and seeing many of my friends and colleagues preparing to move to new churches and follow where God is sending them. I am thankful that God continues to call me to serve here at Bermuda Hundred UMC and to be sent by God with you into the community to share the transforming grace and abundant joy Jesus offers to all! This time two years ago, I felt excited and anxious and sad all at once. I loved the church where I served and the people I had grown to love who SHARING LOVE had grown to love me, who had seen my children born and who loved my children. I was nervous about how God would use me in a new and the people around me in a new place and excited for what God would do. Today, I am no longer nervous about how God can use me, I am thankful, I am overwhelmed, and I am joyful at the way I see God working in our church! This past Sunday as we honored our graduates we all experienced how God has moved through their lives creating journeys and new beginnings! They head out to on new journeys and God will do awesome work in and through them! We will miss them as they set out into the world, and we will pray for them and love them in the journey. This coming Sunday, we will share together in worship as we reaffirm our faith and as our confirmands profess their faith for themselves! These youth have explored their faith and are ready to make a public profession of their belief in Jesus Christ! They are ready to become, not only members of the church but missionaries who make a difference in the world! We, the church, made a covenant with God and with them at their baptism. This Sunday as they profess their faith, they step forward in faith knowing that we continue to love and encourage them as they grow in grace. Everywhere we look in life we see transition and change and new beginnings. Sometimes the changes are exciting, sometimes they are anxious, often they are unknown. What calms the anxiety of change? I believe remembering, seeing, and celebrating what God has done brings joy- which is the antidote to worry. And I believe as we celebrate, the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to see a vision forward. When I sit with families as their loved one experiences surgery, we wait together sharing stories. Usually they share how God has worked in their life, how their family is strengthened by the presence of God, how they feel the power of Christ loving, saving, and growing them, how they know the Holy Spirit sustains them through their small group bible study, prayer, and the ways the Body of Christ surrounds them in love. If you were to sit and be with us, it may just look like we re sharing stories, but the stories are not just stories, they are stories of the power of God working in their lives. When I gather with a family around their loved one during times of grief, we share stories of their life and impact they made. We cry and laugh, we sing and share, we pray and remember. In all of this, God helps us to see the way forward in love. Each day, we know that it is a good practice to count our blessings. Continued on the next page:

3 Continued from the previous page Yet in busyness, fear, or awkwardness, we too often choose not to or simply forget to pray. We talk and celebrate these things in the times of change and transition. As I see my clergy colleagues writing goodbyes to their congregations and preparing to meet their new congregations I rejoice that God has me where I am and that God has brought us all together! I have joy knowing God is working through all of us to make disciples of Jesus Christ and I rejoice that I see the world around us transforming because of your faithful discipleship! Sharing our stories and our gratitude is perfect for times of change and transition, but I believe we do not need to wait until a major change to share our stories, joys, and thankfulness. As I prayed about this, I started listing all the things I love about Bermuda Hundred UMC in no particular order I love how we are genuinely glad to see each other on Sunday morning, at church events, meetings, and bible study. I love to hear about people in inviting friends and neighbors who do not have a church. I love how they know they can invite others knowing that those they invite will be welcomed. I love how our Church Council, Finance, Staff Parish Relations Committee, Nominating, Worship, Trustees, UMM, UMW, meetings begin with a depth of prayer and thoughtful and thought-provoking devotion. I love that before we ever get down to business we remember that we are not just any organization having a meeting we acknowledge who we are and whose we are and I love this about our church and each of our leaders. I love how it takes a long time for us to pass the peace because we do really love one another and seek to share the peace of Christ. I love watching everyone ignore the music when it s time to sit back down because they haven t yet shared the peace with one more person I love praying together with you all- in person, over the phone, through text messages, I love experiencing the power of Christ in our midst when two or three come together. I love the creativity, leadership, and talents that exist in our church and I love witnessing people offer these gifts in their service. I love seeing this leadership and love pour out in potlucks, cook outs, luncheons, and receptions with delicious food and even more wonderful company, people writing cards to share love to those who are sick and homebound, writing notes to children inviting them to VBS, prayer shawls that bring comfort, church signs that get changed, dishwashers and refrigerators that are fixed and kept running, gorgeous church grounds that are loved and maintained, children who are taught Sunday School by loving teachers, singing and shouts of joy that glorify God in our Praise Team and Choir, visits to and food brought to people in times of need, meals made and shared with love to those who otherwise would not have a meal when we feed the homeless, health kits and birthing kits, and blessing bags made with love I love working with incredible and gifted staff who are called by God to serve, people who I have joy to serve with and who I trust and love and rejoice with! People who are dedicated and loving, and kind! I love the joy that is in our church, I love the way people rise to lead and offer to serve, the way each of you care and share your love with one another! I love you all and the way God has brings us together and sends us out! What do you love most about our church? What do you love about what God is doing in your life and our life together? In God s Love, Pastor Beth Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church June 2014

5 The Finance Committee is very pleased to report that we paid $6,500 toward apportionments in the month of May and expect to pay $3,250 on June 1st. We are just a little behind on the payment plan that the Finance Committee approved to pay our apportionments on a regular basis rather than waiting until the end of the year. We don't want to be struggling to meet our regular obligations as well as pay a large apportionment balance in November and December. We feel very good about where we are financially at this point in the year. To continue that financial footing, we need you to remember the importance of supporting the church and our many missions during the summer months, when so many of you are vacationing. Remember, if you aren't at church on Sunday, you can always mail in or drop off your tithes and offerings at the church. Christine will make certain you get the proper credit on your giving statements and it will certainly keep us on target to meet our financial obligations during the slower summer months. Since it is June and graduations are in full swing, I wanted to share with you information about how your apportionments help to support higher education in Virginia and around the world. The Virginia Education Fund supports Virginia Conference church-related colleges, universities, and preparatory schools. These institutions are Ferrum College, Randolph-Macon College, Randolph College, Shenandoah University, Virginia Wesleyan College and Randolph-Macon Academy. Each institution must use 50% or more of its share to provide at least a $500 scholarship to each United Methodist student for attending a United Methodist-affiliated institution. The remainder of the financial support is used to provide religious activities for the students on campus. In additional to the Virginia Education Funding for these schools, we provide funding for the Black College Fund that supports the 11 United Methodist historically black colleges and universities in the United States including one medical school. We also support the Africa University Fund on the continent of Africa which serves students from 21 countries. The gifts provided to these two funds provide opportunities for many students of promise who would otherwise be excluded from higher education. Graduates of these institutions are leaders in the community. Next month, we will continue our discussion as to how your gifts contributed at Bermuda Hundred UMC impact other areas of our conference and around the world as we go about the business of "making disciples for Jesus Christ". God Bless, Betty Forbes, Finance Chairman Finance Committee Report Just Coffee Just Coffee will be continuing the Max Lucado study You'll Get Through This through mid-june. We meet in the Fellowship Hall during Sunday School, and everyone is welcome! Visit our blog for up-to-date information about our group and what we're talking about: Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church June 2014
