2 Greetings from Pastor Hazel Congregational Care Hello Family, Happy Thanksgiving! I wanted to be the first to say that to you. We are entering the month of November and for me that is Thanksgiving time. I love gathering with family and sharing meals together and I also love thinking about why I am so thankful. Let me share with you something that happened to me not long ago that taught me a very valuable lesson. It was one of those weeks where I was feeling behind and I was in my office working on things that needed to be done because of the timelines that require them to be done by the end of the week. That day we had two calls to the office from folk who needed help with either food or housing or some other emergency need. As I was returning to the office from lunch a man was standing at the back door of the church ringing the buzzer to gain access. Our office volunteer told him the pastor was not in the office and he would have to come back later. As I approached him he asked if I was the pastor. To be honest I hesitated before I answered that yes I was. In my mind I had already determined that here was another person coming to the church for help and I knew that if we could help him we would never hear from him again. How can I help you, I asked. He said he was really upset and needed to talk with someone and could I talk with him. He then said something that caused me to pray for forgiveness and reminded me of why I do what I do. I am trying to get a job, he said, but the person won t call me back and I don t know what to do. Will you pray for me? All he asked from me was to take a few minutes to listen and a prayer for strength and guidance. I can do that, I said, and I did. A few weeks later he called the office to let me know he had applied at another job and just received the call that he was hired. He wanted me to be one of the first people he told. Lord God, I am humbled and so thankful that You invite us to be a part of Your ministry. Thank You Lord, for always being there for us, and never being too busy. Thank You for the church, that place of hope in a community. Your church is for all people, including those who need a place to go when it seems there is no other place. Amen. Pastor Don If you heard Pastor Don say Happy New Year! to you on November 27th would you wonder why? You see, the church liturgical year does not begin in January; it begins four Sundays prior to Christmas. This year the first day of the new church year is Sunday, November 27. We call this season Advent, a time of preparation for the coming of Christ, both into the world and into our lives. The advent wreath, a circle of evergreens representing eternity, has been used for centuries to tell the story. Advent begins with a sense of darkness that moves to the light. On the first Sunday, we often sing the hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. This hymn expresses the longing for the Messiah. We observe Advent by the lighting of the advent candles, each representing a gift that Jesus offers us as we allow His life to be lived out through ours. We add one more each week until Christmas Eve, when we light the Christ candle, representing Jesus as the Light of the World. This year as we light the candles on the advent wreath, let us take time to focus on how the coming of Christ into our lives has opened us up to receiving more hope, peace, joy and love, and then consider how we might spread this Good News to others. At Willoughby U.M.C., we want to come along side you through a variety of opportunities to help equip parents to be the spiritual leader of the home through our Faith@Home Ministries. 4 Stewardship Month Hello Family... It s that time of year when we talk Stewardship. As you know, stewardship is the prayerful commitment of sharing our Treasure, our Time and our Talent to support the ministries and missions of our church for the year ahead. We thank you in advance for continuing and/or increasing your monetary pledge AND welcome you if this is the first time you are pledging. Pledging allows the Finance Committee to plan our church budget each year. Our focus this year will be Time your time with God, in prayer, worship, fellowship and service. Watch your mail for post cards challenging you to spend your time in these areas with God and others. We kick off our campaign on Sunday, October 30 when Paul Turner will be encouraging you to make your time with God in prayer and in worship a center of attention in a world that has too many distractions. Join us on Sunday, October 30th at 10:00 in room 102 for a 4week Max Lucado video study on Prayer called before Amen. Please call or tell Stacy Becker at the church if you would like to join the class so enough study books can be purchased. The November 6th focal point will be Time in Fellowship We want to invite you to participate in a small group, Sunday School, Wednesday night Life Class and share your time in study and fellowship. That evening of Nov. 6th at 5:30 pm we will share a meal as we continue our Time in Fellowship as one church. We want to thank you for your service and contributions in supporting our ministries and mission. As a family, we will turn in our pledge cards, and we will celebrate the continued support of our ministries and the mission of Willoughby United Methodist Church. 5 Missions & Social Concerns News Thank you to all who helped with the October 9 Crop Walk! As of 10/17/2016, we have collected $ ! One fourth of that will be returned: half to Wednesday night community dinners and half to McKinley Community Outreach Center. The rest will go wherever the need is greatest in the United States and/or throughout the world. Thank you for your generosity in giving to the October 30 Noisy Collection. That money will be given to our Food Pantry for Thanksgiving giveaways. Our November outreach is the Samaritan Purse s Christmas boxes. Please pick one (or more) up as you leave church service along with a brochure of suggestions on how to fill it. They should be returned by November 13. As always, thank you for your generosity in giving to others! We appreciate you! Our next meeting is Thursday, November 10 at 7 pm in the Parlor. All are welcome! Needed: Gently Used Devotional Booklets Recently a woman from the community knocked on the front door of our church on a Sunday afternoon when almost everyone had gone home. She asked the person, a volunteer, who answered her knock if she could come in to listen to the sermon, have a cup of coffee, and talk. The volunteer, who was just about to leave, invited this unexpected guest to join us for the community dinner on Wednesday and to return for worship the following Sunday. She also thought about giving her an Upper Room or other devotional booklet, but there were none available. This is where you can help. Do you have any old, gentlyused Upper Rooms, Guideposts, or similar devotional magazines on your shelves at home that you could donate to the Welcome Center to be shared with people like this woman? We would like to share these with people who don t have access to devotional materials or may not be able to purchase them. These magazines never go out of style; their message continues to be meaningful and inspirational, even when the date is not current. If your answer is yes, please bring them to the Welcome Center in the Cloister with a note indicating that they are for the Devotional Booklet collection. Thank you in advance for whatever you can contribute to the collection. November

6 To my Church Family: Thank you for your prayers and support during my illness. It meant a great deal to me and my family. I can t thank you enough. Thank You Thank your to all who volunteered to serve as a greeter for the Open Door Ministry. Look for an event recount in the December Broadcaster. As a reminder, volunteers are always appreciated as we continue this ministry next year. The canned good collection on World Food Day Sunday, October 16th, was successful. The total donation was 318 items. We thank everyone who participated. Your support is meaningful as we try to meet the needs of those who seek our help in both food pantries. 7 Get Connected with our Advent Study: Redemption of Scrooge The Mitten Tree Mission Ebenezer Scrooge is a man in dire need of a second chance. Is redemption possible for such a greedy, dark and sad character? The Redemption of Scrooge shows us how the teachings of Jesus can be found in Dickens Christmas classic. From the ghosts of Christmas past, to the Life of the present, and the resurrection of Christmas future, this Advent study will bless us every one and reinvigorate our spiritual journeys as we look at this familiar story through the lens of faith. There are 3 ways to participate in this study during the season of advent, November 27th December 24th. 1. Sunday Mornings 10 a.m. in room 3 2. Your Connection Group (Leaders contact the Christian Education Office to order your materials by November 9th.) 3. OBS (Online Bible Study) Monday evenings Contact the Christian Education office to get connected to this online Study. The MissionMinded Family Ministry will be sponsoring The Mitten Tree Mission through out the advent season. Sunday School classes will be collecting new or gently used hats, mittens, gloves and scarves during the four Sundays in Advent. These items will be donated to McKinley Outreach Center to share with children and adults during the winter season. Youth Confirmation Cake Reception Everyone is invited to congratulate and celebrate our confirmands at a cake reception in Fellowship Hall following the 9 a.m. Confirmation Worship service on Sunday, November 13th. The Fumbly Bumbly Angels, a Christmas Pageant, will be presented on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at 3:00pm. There will be angels, shepherds, sheep, an innkeeper, three kings, Mary and Joseph and a heavenly choir! Short rehearsals will be held on three Sundays; November 27, December 4, and December 11 immediately following the 11 o clock worship service. (snacks will be provided) ALL PEOPLE children, youth and adults are welcome to be a part of this grand celebration of the Christmas Story! Please signup showing your interest on signup sheets located in both entrances and at the Welcome Center located in the cloister. (speaking and nonspeaking parts available) Adults in support roles such as costumes, sets, setup and cleanup are needed too! Let s get ready for an awesome Christmas celebration!
