4 Happy Birthday! We celebrated Edna Harrison s 90th birthday with a reception after the 11:00 am worship service on August 28. Thank you to everyone who attended and who helped with her birthday reception. Happy Birthday, Edna! Before School starts, bring your backpack to the 11:00 am worship service on Sunday, September 4. Pastor Mike will bless all our children as we have our Blessing of the Backpacks. We'll lift up and bless all of our schools, principals, teachers and all school employees. Just Coffee September 11 will bring us into a new study that we are very excited about! Join in the discussion about questions we have all had about the Bible: "Denominations from evangelical to mainline continue to experience deep divisions over universal social issues. The underlying debate isn t about a particular social issue, but instead it is about how we understand the nature of scripture and how we should interpret it. The world s bestselling, mostread, and most-loved book is also one of the most confusing. In Making Sense of the Bible, Adam Hamilton, one of the country s leading pastors and Christian authors, addresses the hot-button issues that plague the church and cultural debate, and answers many of the questions frequently asked by Christians and non-christians alike. Did God really command Moses to put gay people to death? Did Jesus really teach that everyone who is not a Christian will be assigned to hell? Why would Paul command women to keep silent in the church? Were Adam and Eve real people? Is the book of Revelation really about the end times? Who decided which books made it into the scriptures and why? Is the Bible ever wrong? In approachable and inviting language, Hamilton addresses these often misunderstood biblical themes leading readers to a deeper appreciation of the Bible so that we might hear God speak through it and find its words to be life-changing and life-giving." 7 Operation Christmas Child During the month of September we will be collecting hygiene items for this year's Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes! Here are some suggestions of items to donate: Toothpaste Toothbrushes (larger size--we have quite a few smaller ones for kids age 2-4) Hairbrushes/combs Hair accessories Washcloths Wet wipes Tissues Manicure sets Deodorant No liquid or gel items, please! The collection box will be downstairs by the kitchen and each month we will collect a different category of items to fill shoeboxes for children around the world. Last year Bermuda Hundred UMC participated in this ministry for the third year in a row, and it was quite a success! We had a shoebox packing party and were able to deliver 124 shoebox gifts to the collection center in November 2015! If you helped last year, thank you! If not, we hope you will consider getting involved this year! You can also pack your own box if you would prefer--the process is very simple: 1. Pick up a brochure with the box tags at church OR you can print one online 2. Fill your box (it can be a cardboard shoebox or plastic shoebox, wrapped or unwrapped-- just wrap the lid separately!) with gifts and hygiene items for a boy or girl in the age range you select on your box tag (visit for item ideas and instructions). If you need help picking an age range, OCC receives the fewest boxes for boys ages 2-4 and and could use more of these! 3. Include $7 for shipping of your box--either place a check in the envelope in the brochure or pay the amount online (paying online allows you to find out what country your box ends up in!) 4. Bring your shoebox to BHUMC by Sunday, November 13 for delivery to the collection center. If you have any questions, please contact Jessica Mathis at or 2hokiefans@comcast.net. This is a wonderful ministry project to do with your children to teach them about helping others and sharing the joy of Jesus--what true Christmas spirit is all about. 8 The Backpack Program will begin again in mid September. This program helps feed children on the weekends throughout the school year whom otherwise may go hungry. Our church supplies this food to three elementary schools in our area; Enon, Elizabeth Scott and Marguerite Christian. This year we are helping 15 children who need our assistance. If you are able could you please donate some of the foods in this list: pop tarts, individual size cereals, packets of oatmeal, cereal bars, Vienna sausages, chef boy ardee cups (ravioli, spaghetti, beefaroni, etc.), mac n cheese bowls, ramen noodles, boxed tuna, chicken, or ham, apple sauce, fruit cups, jello, pudding, fruit rollups, single serving size snacks, cheese crackers (NO PEANUT BUTTER). Thank you so much for making this program possible! Please remember that the program Operation Christmas Child has started. The list of items needed for the month, as well as the donation box, are located on the bulletin board near the kitchen. The Our Daily Food Pantry is in need of the following items: spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, jelly, cereal (any kind), canned meat (tuna, salmon, corned beef), coffee (regular and instant), tea bags, toilet paper, and dish washing soap. Thanks to everyone who supports this much needed program. Thank you to everyone who has given to the Welcome Home kits for our military! This is one way to let our returning military men and women know that we thank them for their service. Mary Simmons will take donations of items or money until the end of September. 9 Missions As part of our Missions Program, we would like to welcome back home our young service men and women who have been deployed and will now be stationed at Fort Lee. They return to a dorm type environment and are in need of a lot of items to help them adjust to being home. Returning at all times of the day or night, these items will make their first days home easier. Please remember that they will be tired, hungry, ready to take a shower and to wash their clothes. Items in need are the food items like we collect for the backpacks, plus personal hygiene products, and items to wash clothes like Tide Pods and clothes baskets. To make things even better, a nice card telling them how proud we are of them and thanking them for their service. We would also like to work with the youth to have a pizza party at the USO. Our children can help out by making welcome home cards. Everyone enjoys a card. 10 United Methodist Women We are inviting all the women of the church to attend the UMW September 19 th meeting at 6:30 pm in the Grundy Parlor. We will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the United Methodist Women. Our speaker for the evening will be our own UMW Vice President, Kelly Mooney Moubray. Come join us and learn more about the history and future of UMW, here and around the world. REMINDER: Don't forget our fall yard sale scheduled for September 24th, items will be accepted on Friday, September 23 rd from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. We will be looking for winter clothes for this sale - remember no TV sets. Start cleaning out your closets and cabinets now. If you would like to help with the yard sale, please contact Doris Morefield or Betty Forbes. You can sign up for set-up on Friday anytime from 10am to 6pm and from 7:30am to 12 noon on Saturday. We really do have a lot of fun and enjoy the fellowship as we work hard to make money for our mission projects. Young Women's Retreat - we are pleased to have four young women attending the 2016 Young Women's Retreat scheduled for September at Bridgewater UMC in Bridgewater, Virginia. Tabitha Strickler, Kelly Mooney Moubray, Laurel Sage and Tina Spain will be representing Bermuda Hundred UMC. They will be reporting on the retreat at our October 17 th meeting. Please make plans to come and support them. September 25 th, 3:00 pm is the James River District UMW meeting in Emporia at the Emporia Main Street UMC. The mission project for the meeting will be the Emporia Food Pantry. Those attending will be bringing food for the food pantry as our contribution to helping families in the area. All UMW members are invited to attend. Just let Doris Morefield or Betty Forbes if you would like to attend and we will make plans to carpool that afternoon. This is always an exciting meeting and the Bermuda Hundred UMW should be receiving many awards for our work this year. 11 Earn. Save. Give. August 2016 Continued Stewardship Success BHUMC, Stewardship STILL ON TARGET you are looking good. We have made it through the summer and are still right on plan as far as 2016 giving. Through 8 months we have covered 100% of our budget and apportionments, in addition to the giving of even more in time and talents all around the church GREAT JOB, only 4 months to go, and if we continue this commitment throughout the remainder of the year we will hit our annual goal for the 4 th consecutive year. Thank you! Keep Going! In the coming months we begin the process of prayerfully considering our commitment to sharing for 2017 hard to believe, but it s true, 2017 will be here before we know it. In preparation for next year, please begin considering your personal commitment amounts, consistency, and how to challenge yourselves to give more in sharing of all God has blessed us with. This commitment for next year s giving will culminate with our annual Consecration Sunday in November. We hope that 2017 will be a year of continued, successful momentum and even further amazing demonstrations of giving by our church. We just wanted to plant the seed for preparation of the upcoming Consecration Sunday, so that you can begin the planning and praying process for next years goal. Reminder WE NEED YOU, our hope is to expand the committee, our reach and our sharing if anyone is interested is joining the stewardship committee, please jump in we would love to expand the team in 2016 (see/contact Dave Steinbraker for any questions or to inquire about becoming part of the Stewardship committee).
