2 Page 2 All Things Prayer! Love-Motivated Intercession Jesus prayers are no doubt the high point of love-motivated intercession. Just before His arrest Jesus prayed for His disciples protection, for their sanctification, and for their complete unity (John 17) all prayers that reflect His loving concern for them; all kingdom prayers. The next day, nailed to the cross, Jesus prayed for those who crucified Him, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing (Luke 23:34). Today Jesus, at the Father s right hand, continues to intercede for us and all His people out of a heart filled with love. Because of His love-filled prayers we live in the confidence that nothing will be able to separate us from the love of Christ (Romans 8:39). Love-motivated prayers for others are birthed from God s love for us and our love for God. They are prayers for what is on God s heart. With such prayers we step into God s loving concern for His children and His world. We join Him in His love ventures in the world. We become instruments of His love for people. Our loving prayers are like small streams of love that flow into His large river of love. When we pray in this way we not only participate in His love but we become like Him. Jesus reminded us that when we love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us, we are sons of our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:43 45). Oh Christ, forgive my hardness of heart, and my stubborn grasp on my own concerns. Please help me to step into the plans and purposes of Your loving heart. May my prayer life be a stream that flows into Your river of love, pouring out upon my enemies, the lost, the poor, the orphaned, and the marginalized faceless people who drift across my path every day! Help me to focus upon them with Your eyes, motivated by love birthed from Your heart. Adapted from adapted from Praying God s Heart by Alvin VanderGriend. Confess your occasional lack of enthusiasm in devotion. Commit yourself to festive times of personal worship. Ask God to meet with you on those occasions. Ask that the devotional experiences of your family and friends will be characterized by joy. Pray that the Spirit will enliven their walk with God. Franklin Graham Tour Franklin Graham's Decision Tour America is coming to Annapolis, Tuesday, October 11, 12-1 pm, Lawyer's Mall, State Circle to pray for America to return to God, seeking repentance and His forgiveness. We need to come together in unity in the body of Christ, seek God's face and pray like never before for our nation & leaders. Invite unsaved friends, love ones to come and join Marylanders from all over the state. Franklin will also be sharing the Gospel Message of Salvation followed by the opportunity for people to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior! 3 OCTOBER 2016 Page 3 October Prayer Workshop UMW October Meeting October's Prayer Workshop will be held October 8, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Sunday School purple room. Hope to see you there! United Methodist Women will be having a meeting October 4th at 3:30 p.m. at the church. We will meet in the red room. Hope to see you there! This Summer s Book Club An Update As many of you know, this past summer we had our first church-wide summer book club. More than 70 people from our church and several from New Life Community United Methodist Church joined in for this wonderful study. During the July 13 th event we broke down into small groups to discuss the book and then brainstormed together as to how we could serve the Lord in our own community. Lots of wonderful ideas were shared. After considering everyone s input we then reached out to Rev. William Ross, the pastor at New Life who was also in attendance at the book club, so that he could give his input on the evening. The one thing we kept coming back to was this in order to be the Body of Christ in the world, we all need to be the Body of Christ. In other words, our evening book club sparked a desire to unite with our Methodist brothers and sisters at New Life so that we can build relationships with one another and let the Lord lead us from there. At this point we don t have all of the details, but we do know we need to start small. We have planted a seed and now we are praying it will grow. On Sunday, August 28 th fourteen of us from CUMC visited New Life and worshipped with them during their 10:30 service. It was truly uplifting! The choir was absolutely beautiful and Rev. Ross preached an inspiring message, Challenge to live for Christ, from Luke 14:1, They were so welcoming to all of us and we were blessed to be in their presence for this holy time together! Additionally, a few people from each of our churches are going to begin regularly meeting together to see how and where we can help this relationship grow. Bob and Sandy Harris have blessed us by agreeing to serve as the liaisons for CUMC and to be a part of that conversation with New Life. So please be on the lookout for more opportunities to be involved with New Life and to fellowship with them. By doing this we are truly taking Jesus words to heart that where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them. Matt. 18:20 Please stay tuned for more. The fruit of the study is that the Lord has led us to reach out to one another and our community after first uniting in Christ. God can do amazing things through all of us, and we look forward to watching our bond with New Life grow in the months to come. Please keep this new initiative in prayer and when the opportunities arise please consider participating in any joint events so we can show our love of one another as Christ has taught us to do.
