It's been a whirlwind few months for us but I'm enjoying getting to know some of you and am grateful for your support. The flooding of the office area has certainly thrown us for a loop so I just want to remind you that you can always reach me if you need to call or message me. Make sure you save my contact info in your phones!!! By now most of you have received Micah's baptism invitation. As an itinerate pastor, it was important for me to have my children baptized into the whole conference, rather than any one particular church, and to have all my church families present. It would mean so much to me if you could be there. And what better place to hold it than the local church where I met Jesus?!?! If there are any bakers out there who would like to help make cookies for the reception afterward, that would be awesome!!! Featured performers will be David Bomstein, clarinet, Judith Dorian, piano, Margaret Kenney, English horn, and Rosemary Pavlovsky, soprano. Janet Stivanson will also participate. Share this opportunity to enjoy a free concert of great music in Wilkinsburg with friends. These concerts are always free. A CHANCE TO GIVE World Communion Sunday 2018 October 7, 2018 in the World Gifts to World Communion Sunday fund graduate racial-ethnic World Communion Scholarships, with at least one-half of the annual amount reserved for ministries beyond the United States. Donations also provide for undergraduate U.S. Ethnic Scholarship and Ethnic In-Service Training programs. UNITED DEADLINE The deadline for the November United will be Monday, October 22. ALTAR FLOWERS A MOMENTOUS EVENT Wilkinsburg Community Ministry is planning their 50th Anniversary Celebration here on October 20th. The last available date to order altar flowers is October 21. Later, when Kay finds out that her ex-husband's mistress is being unfaithful, she starts fighting to win him back. Stars are June Allison, Joan Collins, Ann Sheridan, Ann Miller, and Agnes Moorhead.

Donations of $1 will be very much appreciated. Some folks like to bring a bag lunch and eat together at 12:00 noon in the church movie room. You are invited to join them.

Come and sit with some of our neighbors. 45 YEARS AND STILL WALKING! CROP WALK 2018 Once again South Avenue Church is the starting and ending point for the annual CROP Hunger Walk.

When Kay learns about this, she immediately travels to Reno to divorce her husband. He then marries his mistress. Later, when Kay finds out that her ex-husband's mistress is being unfaithful, she starts fighting to win him back. Stars are June Allison, Joan Collins, Ann Sheridan, Ann Miller, and Agnes Moorhead. This film received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Musical or Comedy. Soft drinks and popcorn will be served and a short discussion will be held after this film for those who are interested. BIRTHDAYS TO REMEMBER THIS MONTH (from the Homebound List) OCTOBER 16 Mel Brown Woodside Place 1215 Hulton Road Oakmont, PA HOSPITALITY MEALS Breakfast will be served at 9 a.m. on October 21 and brunch will be served at 11:15 on October 28. Sunday October 14, 2018 is the date. Don t worry the Steelers are playing in Cincinnati so our team of walkers will be available. This means walking 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) through the East End to Squirrel Hill and back. Many churches and groups in Wilkinsburg, Forest Hills, Edgewood and the eastern part of the city of Pittsburgh are involved. Registration is at 1:00 PM right here at South Avenue UMC and the walk begins about 2:00 PM We are looking for volunteers who will walk the 10 K on local streets and sponsors to support the walkers with money for the needs of people around the world. Again this year: a ONE MILE route is planned if the entire length is too demanding. Rides back to the church will also be available at the 5K point if needed. Remember a portion of the funds raised stays in the local area for Wilkinsburg Community Ministry and the East End Cooperative Ministry. It is divided as follows: 15% for Wilkinsburg Community Ministry and 10% for the East End Cooperative Ministry. The remaining 75% goes to Church World Service projects in the United States and around the world. Last year a little over $25,000 was raised by this walk, our best effort ever. The South Avenue Team raised $3,090 and we want to surpass that effort this year. The Pittsburgh walk has already raised $1,700, a worthy beginning. Why do we walk? The motto of the Church World Service CROP hunger walk is We walk because they walk. In many places in the world, people must walk to attend school, to obtain food and water, or to obtain firewood. This project raises money to help provide food and clean water for the hungry people of the world. Walkers are strongly encouraged to register online at In recent years this has proven to be one of the best ways to raise money from your friends and relatives. Walkers can also sign up on Sundays at the Action Table after the Service with Glenn Matteson. The walkers will then be asking the congregation to sign on as sponsors with your gifts of money. Books will be available in the church office or call Mabel Matteson at Nancy Patterson, Chairman SOUP SALE COMING As members of the Women s Ministries Board, we are putting on our aprons and honing our chopping skills to start preparation for homemade vegetable soup. On Sunday, October 28, we will sell pints ($3 each) and quarts ($6 each) of soup following the 10am Church service. Please sign up at the Action Table to help us prepare the right amount. All profits from proceeds of the soup sale go to Mission work in Wilkinsburg, in our Conference and around the World. We thank everyone who supports our work for mission. WOMEN'S MINISTRIES CALENDAR Sat., Oct. 27, Annual Conference of United Methodist Women (WPA) will hold their Annual Meeting at Oakland UMC in Oil City, PA. Topic: "Mothers and Daughters: Passing the Flame of Faith, Hope and Love for an Enduring Legacy". Speaker: Jessica Tulloch Thursday, Dec Annual Christmas Tea sponsored by Women's Ministries. All ladies of the Church are welcome. We start with our program at 1 pm and we will be in the Wesley and Fanny Crosby Rooms.
